And good morning, america. It has happened again. The joy of normal life becomes a nightmare in seconds. That was the scene in nice, france, last night. Those thousands that gathered to celebrate the National Holiday after the fireworks shots rang out then this truck mows down the crowd stretched out for more than a mile that was it right there. You saw the people running. You saw the horror leaving a trail of unspeakable carnage. The images are horrific. The suspect was shot and killed on the scene. Officials are now searching for accomplices. At least 4 people were killed including two americans and at least 50 others were injured. Frances state of emergency now extended three months. It was supposed to end on july 26th. This is the fifth terrorist attack in france since january of 2015. State of emergency continues there. We have Team Coverage here and overseas. Starting with abcs Alex Marquardt on the scene in nice, good morning, alex. Reporter good morning, george. This attacker could not have struck at a happier or busier time. This is where it happened. You can see this entire waterfront has been shut down. This is called la promenade des anglais and the beaches are closed as france tries to come to terms with this latest horror at 10 30 p. M. Local time as thousands took to the famous streets to take in a now just fireworks celebration commemorating frances National Holiday a white truck emerged. This video capturing it moving slowly at first then quickly accelerating aiming directly into the densely packed crowd killing and maiming scores of men, women and children. Screams of panic and terror echoing throughout this popular coastal city. You could see blood and bodies everywhere. Reporter the Truck Driving a little over a mile mowing down dozens like a bowling ball as hundreds ran trying to escape. They were all screaming and everyone was running in every direction. Seconds later this giant white van came bolting down this road at was just taking out people left, right and center. At this point we began to run because everyone was frantically running because we had no idea what was actually happening. Reporter panic spreading throughout the crowd as hundreds grabbed loved ones and ran, some people jumping into the sea to escape. We were just turning down alleys and kind of looking for somewhere that might be safe. We just assumed there were fireworks still going off but then really shortly after that i saw people running and, you know, we didnt at this point have any idea what we were running from. Reporter security on the scene fired at the truck riddling its cab and windshield with bullets finally stopping the bloody rampage and killing the gunman. [ speaking a Foreign Language ] reporter Law Enforcement on the scene described the truck as full of weapons and grenades. Frances president Francois Hollande telling his country the horror has once again hit and that france is under the threat of islamic extremism. Among the at least 84 dead were two americans, Sean Copeland and his 11yearold brodie, the two austin, texas, residents were in europe on a Family Vacation which began in spain, a Family Member put out a statement saying losing a loved one is hard no matter the circumstances, but losing a loved one in such a tragic and unexpected way is unbearable. A lawmaker told french radio there was someone on the street that jumped on to the truck to try to stop it and that was the moment that the police were able to shoot and kill the driver. And, george, just a short time ago the state department did confirm the deaths of that american father and son. They have offered their help and condolences. George. Inga, thank you for joining us. I know you were on that promenade when this all broke out. Tell us what happened. Thank you for having me. I was right on the promenade on the side where the truck was rolling through the crowd. At the moment when it was happening. And how far away were you when it start to come through the crowd . What kind of notice did you have . What kind of alert . It happened very quickly. It was literally split seconds. We were just heard the gunshots. The first gunshots and i started running. I looked back and i saw the truck going through the people right in a place where i was standing. Just seconds. So it was coming right towards you. About how fast was it going . He was actually accelerating, i think, or at least it seemed that way. He was definitely going over 60 miles an hour. It seemed very fast. And you actually had to jump out of the way . I dont think people had any time to jump out of the way. It was a very large crowd. It was right after the fireworks, everybody was still there and there was not enough space to even give each other way to run out of the way from the truck. I think some people probably could do that if they were on the fringe but i dont think anyone had much time to run away. If you are further down on the promenade where i was, maybe because we had bash we heard the gunshots so we had a little more notice but the people in the beginning of the promenade had no chance. So at the beginning of the promenade, youre talking about an avenue where people are 10, 20 across completely packed in . You broke up for a second. Would you mind repeating your last phrase. The scene on the promenade especially at the beginning is 10, 20 people across. Verily densely packed. They had no chance, no way to get out of the way . Actually i cannot hear you right now, not at this moment. Im going to try one more time, inga. The question the question, how densely packed were these people at the top of the promenade . You were asking me how many people were around me . Yes, just try to describe the scene. Let me tell you within split seconds of hearing the gunshots i started running and the entire place seemed like a complete chaos. People were running in different directions, there were people all the way around me. There was so many of us that there was ill tell you im running and there was a lady right next to me. She stumbled and fell on the ground and nobody was even helping her. People kept running over her and i was trying to pick her up so she could also run. It was complete chaos all the way around and i dont think people knew in which direction to run. It was not quite clear where it was safe. I think not maybe everyone saw the truck. I dont know but it was a little bit disorienting. I can only imagine how disorienting it was. How did you finally know you were safe . Where did you end up . Yeah, i cant i think first of all when i was on the other side of the road, astin have as i heard the gunshots i ran across away from the crowd and felt safer but still looking around to understand where the gunshots came from because i saw the truck pass by but wasnt sure it was over. To me it was immediately apparent it was an attack, not an accident and i actually stayed right next to the scene. I was in a hotel where i could see the entire scene from and i just ran to the hotel as soon as i was in the hotel i felt safe. Were glad youre safe this morning. Inga, thank you for sharing your story with us. And now, of course, the focus on the investigation. We know that french investigators desperately trying to determine who was behind this attack and whether isis was involved or not. French president hollande saying france as a whole is threatened by islamist terrorism and abcs chief investigative correspondent brian ross is here with the very latest. So, brian, what can you tell us about the suspect . Who may have been behind this . Good morning, amy. As of this hour theres been no claim of responsibility for what happened in nice but online followers of isis have been celebrating the deadly attack. French media this morning are identifying the suspect as a 31yearold frenchtunisian w whose apartment is being searched at this hour. U. S. Officials this morning say isis is certainly the leading candidate given their huge ranks of french recruits and repeated calls for just such a vehicle attack. French recruits are estimated to be some 1700 french citizens believed to have gone to iraq and syria to join Terror Networks mostly isis, many have been killed and others have returned to france with numbers so large french authorities have been unable to keep an eye on so many suspects and, again and again isis sent messages to its followers about using vehicles to attack, quote, according to one spokesman, if you are not able to find an ied or a bullet, then single out the disbelieving american, frenchman or any of their allies, smash his head with a rock or slaughter him with a knife or run him over with your car and on. Simple but unsophisticated weapons. Americans, frenchmen. What are the immr. I indicati implications here. The u. S. Is a top priority target which offered american recruits similar encouragements. Counter terrorism officials are looking at closely the tempo of the attacks in the west. It was just two weeks ago that an isis directed attack was carried out at the airport at istanbul, turkey, and two weeks before that it was the isis inspired attack at the nightclub in orlando, florida. So far more than 400 people have now been killed by isis attacks on western targets, not including nice and, of course, thousands, thousands more in syria and iraq, slaughtered by isis, amy. All right, brian, thank you. Now to the white house. Jon karl is there. Our chief white house correspondent. Of course, jon karl, as soon as this happened president obama has been working so closely with france on this. He was briefed almost immediately after the attack and directed the white house to offer any assistance to french authorities with that investigation. The president later issued a statement saying, quote, on behalf of the american people, i condemn in the strongest terms what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in nice, france. We stand in solidarity and partnership with france, our oldest ally as they respond to and recover from this attack. Secretary of state john kerry was actually in paris just hours before the attack attending a bastille day parade with french authorities and directed the state department to try to account for all americans in nice urging them to contact the consulate and, of course, to directly reach out to their families and friends. Ing okay, thanks very much. Lets turn to Martha Raddatz who has the very latest on the war on terror and where things stand in the fight specifically against isis. Good morning, martha. What can you tell us . Reporter good morning, amy. As you know, the u. S. And coalition have been pounding syria, pounding iraq. Were about to send more than 500 more troops into iraq to try to retake mosul, the iraqis have retaken fallujah and retaken ramadi but as they squeeze the isis fighters in iraq, in syria, these attacks go beyond the border and thats the real problem here. They have to keep up with the intelligence. They have to find out who is returning to france, who is returning to these other countries and theres a real strain on Law Enforcement and intelligence. Amy. All right, Martha Raddatz with the latest. Thank you. Of course, amy, those deadly attacks overseas are raising Big Questions about safety on soft targets at home. Pierre thomas tracks Homeland Security and, pierre, concerns here especially high with both political conventions coming up. Yes, george, Law Enforcement has identified no specific threat in connection with those conventions but i can tell you theres deep concern just because of all the pace that were seeing of the just yesterday fbi director and Homeland Security secretary jeh johnson was expressing worry about the potential things could get out of hand mainly because of groups with polarizing views that may descend on each convention. My sources tell moo he that leading into the conventions, that this is perhaps the most volatile and complicated security picture in recent memory. It comes against the backdrop as weve talked about so many time, pierre, with new warnings and alerts from isis to all of their followers, just attack whoever you can, wherever you can. Reporter the short answer is that theres real risk. We saw San Bernardino last december and only about a month ago as brian mentioned the orlando massacre when a madman inspired by isis killed 49 people and wounded another 53. I can tell you ive been talking to security sources last night and this morning and theyre locked in on whats happening in france in part because as we said, were only days away from the start of those conventions where there will be very large crowds, george. Donald trump set to name his running mate this morning, sources telling abc news hes asked indiana governor mike pence but now postponed that announcement and tom llamas is at trump tower with the latest. Campaign sources tell me that donald trump will announce this morning that he is rescheduled his joint appearance with his running mate possibly in a tweet and this will launch the new team and end what has been a vp Selection Process like we have never seen. Sources maintain to abc news that indiana governor mike pence is the pick. This morning, donald trump not ready to show his cards. Republican sources told abc news trump offered the job to indiana governor mike pence and pence boarded a plane, flew to new york thinking he had accepted. How do you feel . Reporter but as we caught up with pence at a Manhattan Hotel trump said this in an interview. Mike has done a great job as governor of indiana. You look at the numbers and its been great, you know. Hes been done a fantastic job but i havent made a finalfinal decision. Reporter trump canceling his big News Conference to announce his running mate citing the tragedy in france. And out of respect for this horrific situation, i just think it was inappropriate to have the News Conference tomorrow. Reporter though trump could change his mind. All signs still point to pence. The firstterm governor ser a 57yearold establishment republican who is a born again christian. He served as a member of the u. S. House of representatives for more than a decade and is a former radio and Television Talk show host. In apparently selecting pence, trump chose someone who is very untrump and could be a rocky honeymoon ahead. I do strongly disagree with the call that would ban muslims from this country. I found it both offensive and n unconstituti unconstitutional. Reporter pence has had major disagreements with trump and this week pence seemed to dodge a direct question if he supports trumps plan to build a wall along the southern border. As president Ronald Reagan said a nation without borderers is mott a nation. Reporter pence told me he could still work with trump even though he doesnt agree with him on everything. How do you share that ticket if you have a fundamental disagreement with him on the muslim ban. Look, i served in congress for 12 years. Ive been a governor for 3 1 2 years. I havent agreed with every one of my republican colleagues or democrat colleagues on every issue but im supporting donald trump because we need change in this country. Reporter now, as for the convention, it had been reported by others that tim tebow was going to speak at the Rnc Convention but tebow has posted a video on instagram saying he will not appear at the Rnc Convention. He also said this, lets forget our quarrels and our differences and come together on one nation under god. Amy and george. Okay. Thats right, thousands of people were packed out here along the waterfront. This is called the promenade des anglais, one of the most famous stretches of the French Riviera and theyre all out here watching a Fireworks Show for bastille day, the french National Holiday. Around 10 30 p. M. When that Fireworks Show was wrapping up witnesses say that a large white truck drove onto the road that goes along the waterfront and started mowing people down. Driving in a zigzag fashion. One eyewitness said, it was like a bowling ball crushing everything in its path and heres a glimpse of what that moment was like. It was sheer terror because there was everyone screaming on their phones. There were people crying. It was just hones quickly firing into the truck, riddling its cab with bullets killing the driver. Little is known right now about the suspect. French media reporting that he is 31yearold Mohamed Bouhlel and they have searched his apartment and a short time ago the state department confirmed among the 80 killed were two americans an father and son from austin, texas, their names abc news has confirmed are sean and Brodie Copeland. Just a short time ago frances president and Prime Minister arrived here in nice and meet with First Responders as well as the injured. Frances president has said that without a doubt, this was islamic terror. Amy. Alex, thank you. Joining us from nice, france, Mark Krikorian traveling there with his family when he heard the commotion outside. Thank you for being with us this morning and tell us what you saw, what happened . I know you had just been at the fireworks display with your family and had just gotten home. They were just like the fourth of july, kids on their shoulders and then when it ended, i turned around, a lot of people did and started leaving but there was musical performances continuing so a lot of people were staying. And as soon as i got back to my apartment which is just a couple of blocks away, right outside our window which overlooks a pedestrian mall with cafes and, you know, stores and things, we started to hear screaming. I mean hysterical screaming, running, people knocking tables over, glass shattering and we looked out people are obviously running for their lives. I assumed it was some kind of shooter or attack. Thats the obvious thing and my kids were gawking out the window. I told them to get away from the window because didnt have any idea what was going on and then once things settled down right outside my window much to my chagrin i went out to see how close i could get to see what was going on and the police had a police line set up so i couldnt get right to where the actual carnage was but you could see not just all of the Police Presence and everything but a constant flow even two hours later there were still ambulances arriving, presumably from farther away and then the most grim thing i saw was a whole convoy of minivans from the nice citicorp row theyre office arriving to do their work. Mark, i cant imagine walking out into this beautiful promenade and just moments ago you were celebrating bastille day and then to see what you saw, can you describe what you were feeling, thinking as you witnessed all of this . You know, before we came, i actually had kind of researched whether there were going to be largescale crowd events here in nice as the kind of thing that would attract terrorists and the european soccer finals had just finished, they had several of the matches here but that was weeks before we got here and i figured, well, thats okay, you know, i completely overlooked the idea that bastille day, of course, is a huge event everywhere in france. Its their big fourth of july and so, yeah, i mean i was actually not all that surprised once i found out what happened. Thats certainly a side commentary in the times we live in. As a father, youre there with your family traveling in france a lot of americans traveling to europe this summer with their families. How do you feel about having your family there . Do you want to get back to the states . What do you say to other travelers headed there in the next days and weeks to come. Well, i mean we have two weeks left on this apartment and at this point niece is the safest place in all of france. I mean theyve got soldiers and police every place so im not going anywhere. You cant predict this kind of thing. Its, you know, its just its going to happen. You cant put your life on hold just because of the just because of the possibility of this sort of thing. Look, i live in washington, d. C. And every day i go to work theres a possibility Something Like this could happen. You cant paralyze yourself because of it. Matt, let me begin with you. The french are assuming at this point this man had accomplice, huge truck, guns, explosives even though he was the only person caught right now. This is a pretty sophisticated operation. It does look relatively sophisticated. We dont know yet whether this is an individual acting as a lone wolf or whether he had accomplices but real concern among french authorities there are others involved so a priority is going to be can we find out are there others . Look at the once we identify this individual who is he connected to and, indeed, whether there is a connection back to isis or some other terrorist organization. The question is right now we also have seen a pattern as brian was talking about in our last half hour over the last month or so, istanbul, orlando and now this as well. As isis gets squeezed on the battlefield in syria and iraq put out the message to all of their followers simply to attack with whatever weapons they have at hand. How do you defend against that . Very difficult. I think its a really important point that they have been squeezed. They are under pressure in their sanctuary in syria and iraq so we can expect perhaps that the pace of this types of attacks whether theyre lone wolf attacks or small numbers of people carrying out these attacks in the west may well increase and theyre very difficult to defend against. Ray kelly, you have had that job here in new york as the new York City Police commissioner. I was thinking, you know, july 4th here everyone down on the east river, the same kind of crowds. How do you defend a crowd like that. With great difficulty, to question about it. I think what youll see in the short term throughout the country, the police will do more truck stops but, lets face it, truck traffic is sort of the lifeblood of the commerce of this country. Its very difficult to slow it down appreciably so intelligence is ultimately the key, anything that you can get that indicates someone like this, of course, would be helpful but i know we talked about the message before that was put out, this is a message put out in september of 2014. Do what you can, smash their heads with a rock, that sort of thing. That message as headline tweeted or retweeted perhaps over a million types so that is the exhortation thats going out and its going out every day and this, i believe, is the manifest indicatimanifes manifesta manifestation of that. What can police do better next time around . I think, amy, what youre going to see in these open air events where roads are physically going to have to be blocked maybe not with police but jersey barriers or some concrete apparatus to keep trucks and vehicles from moving through a particular area. Its not perfect but i think youre going to see more of that. Thats one thing that police can do, brad. We cant just stop living our lives as Mark Krikorian was saying earlier. What can people do when theyre in a situation like this, at a ball game, at a fireworks display, what can they do to help protect themself, give themselves a better chance . George, there are a number of things. One when you walk into a football stadium or an event or an open market, you look at ways you can move if, in fact, something would happen. In other words, to your right, to your left, because the first thing you look for is cover. If you dont get hurt at the initial attack, look for cover. Get behind something. Then you have to think is this a safe place, do i need to get away from this target . And keep your wits about you and begin to move. Go to doorways, but go away from ground zero and keep moving. Thats going to be the real key. Go ahead. I was going to say the key is plan ahead. When you walk into any event you say where are the exits and know what you would do, sad we have to think about these things. Do you tell your children . Does everyone in the family need to have a plan . Absolutely. It has to be a group effort and you have to keep your wits about you. Im not suggesting people get paranoid but the key is youve got to act. You cannot just stay there and be horrified. Move. Bottom line, keep moving. Exactly. Okay, brad garrett, thanks very much. I want to bring in Kristen Soltis anderson and right now talking about the political impact. We see donald trump right there with newt gingrich. Both donald trump and Hillary Clinton have taken to social media after the attacks. Clintons campaign tweeting every american stands in strong solidarity with the people of france. And also donald trump tweeted his prayers and condolences to the victims and families. So, kristen, whats your sense of how much this will impact the race for the white house . Its becoming kind of a workrelatedly occurrence. Itll continue to drive the issue of security to the top of voters minds. Its already caused donald trump to postpone the announcement of his Vice President during the Republican Convention, theres going to be a night that is themed security night. And certainly youre going to see this become an even bigger topic of conversation in coming weeks as voters get more and more concerned about their own safety. I snack on protein bars and lots of fresh fruit. One of my favorite dinners is the cooked baked fish tacos. I top it with some cabbage slaw and some fresh crema and drink a lot of water. I actually cut up one whole lemon and put in my water jug and refill that all day long. Drink water all day. I see wine there too. So after i drink my water one of my favorite things is to drink wine too so at night i always drink wine, as well. Good to know you can do that and still lose weight. You have to have a balance.
