[ sirens] and fore. Highspeed police chase caught on camera. Right in the middle of the fairway. Players scrambling to get out of the way. How did they get so off course . And we do say good morning, america. On this thursday morning and a Third Straight night of tornadoes in the midwest. Take a look at this. Another set of tornadoes side by side. This time in south dakota. Very similar to what we saw in nebraska. We went to right get to that Severe Weather. Abcs Steve Osunsami is on the scene in Wessington Springs, south dakota. Good morning, steve. Reporter this is whats left of a car dealership. Its hard to tell which direction the tornado came because the whole place looks stepped on. I want you to take a good look right over there. There looks to be a trailer on top of other cars and all this rubble. It shouldnt be there. This whole town reeling from the tornado that hit here overnight. No, no, no, no. Reporter overnight the sky was falling again over families in the dakotas and in the midwest. 15 tornadoes reported in south dakota alone. Listen to it. Wow. You can hear the roar. Oh, my god. Were so close. Reporter and look closely. Another set of twin twisters like large whips from the heavens snapping through these small open towns bringing violent winds to families near crow lake. Two on the ground at once. Two on the ground at once. Reporter this was the tornado that struck Wessington Springs damaging more than a dozen homes. Oh, [ bleep ]. Reporter sending sparks flying as it mowed down electric substations. These are photos families took with their cell phones. It was coming right at them. This morning three businesses here are destroyed including this car dealership. Two people were hurt, but everyone here survived. This marks the third agonizing night of tornadoes in the heartland. On monday thesis ter twisters tore through pilger, nebraska. Oh, my god. Reporter the National Weather service confirmed a total of four tornadoes nearly leveled that small town. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt here. Everyone walked out alive, and the governor has sent in the National Guard. George . Wow, so lucky. Uhhuh. Very much so. Now to the crisis in iraq and reports this morning islamic militants have taken over the countrys biggest oil refinery. As president obama meets with congressional leaders to weigh his options, abcs jon karl is standing by. Hes there at the white house, but first lets go to abcs martha raddatz, who is live this morning in baghdad. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, robin. The u. S. Is getting more and more involved here. Weve got those Ground Troops over at the u. S. Embassy, and this morning, fighter jets above us. This morning, u. S. Fighter jets from the Aircraft Carrier uss bush in the persian gulf are flying Surveillance Missions acro across iraqi skies looking for armed militants. The warplanes backed up by additional Surveillance Aircraft and drones patrolling the skies around the clock, providing the u. S. Military on the ground realtime images from the pentagon to baghdad. But the u. S. Says there are still gaps in intelligence making largescale air strikes difficult without significant civilian casualties. This image shows part of the reason why. From the ground, distinguishing the enemy isis militants from the civilians around them is difficult. From the air its nearly impossible. These forces are very much intermingled. Its not as easy as looking at an iphone video of a convoy and then immediately striking it. Reporter but the clock is ticking. This morning, iraqs Largest Oil Refinery has reportedly fallen into the hands of the militants who can now cut power across parts of iraq and control the sale of gasoline. Which is why the Iraqi Government is now pleading for u. S. Air strikes but that is not likely to happen any time soon, george, if at all. Well, lets talk to jon karl now at the white house. Martha, thank you. President obama had his first meeting with congressional leaders on the crisis and, jon, the president did make it pretty clear in that meeting he doesnt expect to come to congress now for new authorization for military action. Reporter he sure did, george. What he said is that none of the options that he is now considering would require congressional authorization and that is the clearest indication yet that the idea of a major air campaign against militant targets in iraq is simply off the table. The leading option now under consideration and likely to happen is for the president to send a very small contingent of about 100 special Operation Forces to iraq to advise the iraqi military. If there are any air strikes at all, george, it would be very small, kind of like the targeted strikes weve seen in yemen and pakistan. The president pushing very hard for the Prime Minister of iraq to open up his government. He wants real change there. Reporter yeah, and theyve been explicit, publicly and privately, that there will be no major air strikes like the ones the iraqis are asking for unless that government first takes steps to reach out to the sunnis and others to get a process of reconciliation under way. They think thats the only longterm solution in iraq. Jon, thanks very much. Now top stories from amy. Good morning. We begin with a major outage on facebook shutting out millions of users around the globe. This was the message posted early in morning, sorry, something went wrong. Were working on getting this fixed as soon as we can. The site with 1. 2 billion users crashed for about a half hour. The outage also affecting mobile sites and apps and as we came on air this morning, facebook released this statement saying we resolved the issue quickly and were now back to 100 . Sorry for any inconvenience. It did not say, however, what caused that problem. Well, another automaker is under investigation for faulty ignition switches similar to the problem that forced General Motors to recall millions of its cars. This time its chrysler. More than a million minivans and suvs are affected regulators say the ignition key could jostle out of position, cut power and disable air bags. Meantime, lawmakers grilling General Motors ceo mary barra. Theyve revealed that emails that show a gm employee warned the company about a possible ignition problem with the chevy impala nearly ten years ago, but that car was not recalled until this week. Well, a frightening scene in los angeles. A woman escaped from this car. Look at that dangling four stories high off the edge of a parking garage. Apparently she hit the gas instead of the brake. Luckily those cables stopped the car from actually falling. And another deadly crash involving a private jet. This time a plane veering off the runway in huntsville, alabama, bursting in flame killing three. The cause of that crash under investigation. And the owner of the Washington Redskins is vowing to fight a federal trademark ruling that denies protection from the teams name. The u. S. Patent office has ruled the name is disparaging to native americans and, therefore, cannot be trademarked. The teams appeal could take years. And a major accomplishment in the major leagues. Dodger pitcher Clayton Kershaw threw his first career nohitter against the rockies. The only other nohitter of the season so far was also thrown by a dodger, josh beckett. Horrible and vulgar how one spanish newspaper is describing spains shocking world cup loss to chile. The defending champs are now eliminated from later rounds and that excitement unfortunately turned violent when hundreds of chilean fans stormed the stadium pushing over a wall to get into the stands. 85 were arrested. The action resumes today with all three matches on our sister network, espn. And finally, imagine youre enjoying a relaxing day on the golf course when this happens, a drug suspect in a pickup truck comes racing through leading police on a highspeed chase right into the fairway. Golfers scrambling out of the wray as the truck and several squad cars tore up the grass. The suspect was arrested a short time later but those officers are now being investigated for possibly violating protocol. This from our clever producer, maybe they should have gone to the driving range instead. Oh. Z. I had to attribute that one. I was wondering if you were going to read that or not. Thats why i stated that. Thanks, ken. Lots of new hazards on that course. Over to robin. I love how she threw the producer under the bus. Way to go. All right, you two. To medical news and possible breakthrough in the fight against heart attacks. The leading killer in this country. Researchers have made a discovery that could lead to the first new drugs to combat Heart Disease in decades and abcs chief health and medical editor dr. Richard besser, i know youre excited. Tell us. Its exciting. This our blood we have different types of fat, cholesterol, triglycerides and others and most of the work on preventing Heart Disease has focused on cholesterol. They look at the genes of people who had very low triglycerides and found they had a mutation in a particular gene and if you had a mutation in that gene, your risk of Heart Disease was 40 lower than other people. Thats a dramatic decline. So learning this could lead to a new class of drugs. How would that be different . The focus now has been on statins. We know people who take them to reduce Heart Disease and that deals mainly with cholesterol but we know that meme who are on statins if they have a high triglyceride are still at risk for a heart attack so this gives the people a target to say, can we focus on this gene and by doing that drop their triglycerides and lower their risk of Heart Disease further. If you have heart issues whats your advice . Its going to be years before this takes place, so a heart healthy life, you know, good diet and exercise, knowing your Blood Pressure and taking care of that and knowing your Family History because that will predict a lot what your risk is. Well have you back to discuss other things in the program. Such an interesting advance. A new approach for fighting bullying. A fourth grader and his family are suing a classmate and his parents for bullying. Abcs Mara Schiavocampo has the story. Reporter a case of alleged school yard bullying that has become a case in court. This morning a fourth grader at a chicago Area Elementary School suing a fellow student. Parents matthew and deveri del core filing the suit, identifying the student as c. A. Bullied their son for the entire school year. Quite an incident for us to go through this in our house and have our son waking up at night screaming about not wanting to go to school and crying and, you know, feeling that he wasnt safe at school. Reporter the lawsuit which also names the accused students parents, the School District and the principal says c. A. Bullied him on a weekly basis, hitting, pumping, choking, elbowing, kicking, pushing, spitting, threatening to kill him and tripping hill on the stairs. Very traumatic situation for my client, its a traumatic situation for his parents. Reporter the del cores said they filed several Police Attacks and say administrators did nothing to stop them. At first we were pretty confident the school would address it but after a while it became frustrating knowing nothing was done. Reporter in a statement the School District says we value the safety and security of each and every one of our students and Staff Members and take bullying prevention very seriously. A serious issue now moving from the classroom to the courts. In a new development the alleged victims mother says she was fire the from her job as a cafeteria worker at the school because of this suit. The family says they will continue to fight that in court, as well. Now, in the bullying case theyre seeking damages of at least 50,000. We did reach out to the accused students family for comment but did not hear back. Very unusual case here. It does seem like the family went to the lawsuit as a last resort. They tried a lot and documented everything. Went to the police so they established a pattern of complaints and, unfortunately, they said their child continued to be beat up. Mara, thanks very much. Every School District has a different policy in dealing with it. They handle it individually so the parents couldnt get the resources they need. Thank you. Now to that could be what could be the next big thing. Amazon making a bold move into the phone business unveiling a smartphone with a brandnew feature, 3d display and abcs Neal Karlinsky has the story. Reporter in a world crowded with cool, new phones, the amazon fire introduced wednesday has been able to break through the noise and actually get people excited. The answer is yes [ cheers and applause ] reporter its standout feature, 3d, a screen that seems to leap off the phone. It has the normal camera and has a frontfacing camera but the secret sauce, they say, the four additional cameras in front which read where your head is, where your face is and that is what they say gives it the 3d effect when you look at the screen. You can see it moving as i move the phone around. Theres a little astronaut jumping around and tentacles coming around the planet. Very cool, very 3d. Reporter the other standout feature is firefly, a way to identify virtually anything by looking at it with the phones camera or by listening to it with the microphone. Its no coincidence firefly makes it a powerful tool for shopping since every item you look at pops up like a web search. Its a buck, itll tell you the name of the book and where to get it. I think this phone is not just about the phone itself, i think its really about pushing amazons services. Reporter amazon reinvented how we shop, how we read and even makes its own tv shows now, streams movies and music and wants to use drones for Home Delivery someday. Which is why many believe its not about the phone, its about offering you one more tool in an amazon world. For Good Morning America, Neal Karlinsky, abc news, seattle. In the heat index, the selfie that may have saved a womans life. Doctors didnt believe anything was wrong so she shot a video of her face when she experienced paralysis on her left side and that helped diagnose the problem. Mara schiavocampo has that story for us. It was like 6 42 and sensations happening again. Reporter some quick thinking. Its all tingling on left side. Reporter and this cell phone video i dont know why this is happening to me. Reporter may have saved this womans life. 49yearold stacy jepis was driving home after running errands when she felt half her body go weak. The smile, they said, smile. My hand is hard to lift up. Reporter it was panic. It was fear because my leg, my arm, my face, my speech, everything. Reporter but this wasnt the first time this happened. Just two days earlier stacy was watching tv when her entire left side went limp. She rushed to the emergency room where doctors gave her a diagnosis she couldnt believe. Stress. I really thought to myself youre kidding me. Reporter doctors told her if the weird symptoms happen again just breathe. So when the numbness and slurred speech came back, she did. The doctor said to breathe in, breathe out. Managing stress. Reporter whipping out her smartphone to document her episode. Then i just pulled out my phone because i needed somebody to see what was happening to me. Reporter less than 48 hours later she showed the video to doctors at krembil neurocenter. This time she was diagnosed with a small stroke called a tia. Hard to describe. Videotaping gave us a compelling picture of what happened to her. Reporter had she ignored the symptoms she would have likely had more strokes putting her at risk for permanent damage. Today shes getting rehab treatment and taking medication to prevent another episode and, of course, her phone is now always at her side. Now i dont leave home without it. I will dial 911 first and, you know, its always handy just in case. For Good Morning America, Mara Schiavocampo, abc news, new york. Thank you, mara. Bringing back rich besser. Call 911 first. Yes. The fact that she did this. Are more and more people doing it . I mean, this is extremely rare. If youre having one of these its a frightening experience but think back five years ago. People didnt have a video camera with them but it can provide incredibly useful information much as a pediatrician, im frequently saying to parents, you know, why dont you film that. Theyll say my child is making a strange noise when shes sleeping at night. Get it on film. A rash that comes and goes. It can be so incredibly helpful and here in this case it probably saved her life. 10 of people who have this will have a stroke within two days, a real stroke. Whats terrifying she was being misdiagnosed even brushed off a little bit. What do you do if that happens . Doctors make mistakes. If youre having a panic attack and hyper vent late the symptoms can look a lot like this. It can help if you have an advocate, someone who can describe that she wasnt panicked. It came on suddenly. Ask for a second opinion. If they brush you off and youre not feeling youre getting good care the next day go see a specialist on that and then document everything that happens, all of your symptoms so that when you go, you can say it was this, this and this. I was just sitting this and it came on. What are the symptoms of an actual stroke so you can know if youre in serious danger. The first thing is, realize that young people can have strokes. More than 600,000 younger than 45 have a stroke every year. Remember f. A. S. T. , f for your face, facial droop. A for arm, if one droops, weaker, thats a sign. S for slurred speech and t for time because every second coups. You have those, get to the emergency room. Get there right away and tell them what happened and theyll do studies. If youre having one of these, your scans may all be normal. Youll have to go back again and again. Okay. Thanks very much. Next up on our heat index, Jennifer Lopezs new single first love. Got us thinking about the magic of first love and Second Chances and jennifer helped us bring it all together for this couple, nancy and steve. Nancy was my first love. Probably the most incredible person ive met especially because when i met her i was 19 and she was 17. We met in phoenix at a party on august 4th of 1989. She was in the kitchen and saw her and fireworks went off and ended up speaking on the back porch of another party for four or five hours. We had the most amazing conversations i had ever had at that point and he was getting ready to board the uss enterprise for six months so we said our goodbyes and starting writing. We exchanged more than 200 letters back and forth during that sixmonth period. Reporter but nancy was still in high school in oregon. Steve on the east coast. The distance was really hard for us as kids and so i decided i wanted to date somebody at my high school. So i had to send him a letter which was awful. Reporter a decade passed where they lost touch. Steve ended up getting married. Nancy was engaged and had a son. And then social media came into the picture. Reporter they reconnected first on myspace and picked up on facebook. His Facebook Status was always been in a relationship so i thought i didnt think he was single but on valentines day he posts a beautiful poem on my page. Reporter the stars finally seemed to be aligned. To give first love a Second Chance. We logged in the last four months over 200 hours of phone time, over 4,000 texts. Its just been incredible. Reporter we told nancy we wanted to interview her about the story but she has no idea who is about to come knocking. Ready, steve . Yes, i am. Okay. Nervous. A little more excited than nervous. Okay, good. Thats a good thing. Hi, nancy. How are you . My goodness. Im jennifer. Hi. Nice to meet you. Im shaking. Dont shake. Youre sweet. Oh, my gosh. Youre so pretty. Come on in. Thank you. Thank you. This is exciting. This is exciting. You look great. Thank you very much. I dont know if you know this but i have a new song out. Yeah. Called first love. Yes, i have heard. And, steve, talk about how this came together because we saw you there skyping with Jennifer Lopez. That had to have been an outofbody experience. My sister Sandy Bennett sent the story in to the producers and set it up by setting up a skype and it was j. Los idea to do the surprise. I was on board immediately and fantastic opportunity. I thought we had a remarkable story. What a way to put an exclamation point on it. Look at the two of you. Cant keep your hands off her. 22 years. 22 years. What surprised you about each other . Well, seeing him in real life, hes so handsome. Ah. Yeah. Go ahead. [ laughter ] your turn. Well, what surprised me the most is how all the qualities that originally endeared me to her are still present. Theyre just more refined and obviously were more mature now and hopefully we wont have to go another 22 years now. I think that would be impossible. The way that you were able to keep each other in your hearts. Right. For those 22 years is so beautiful. Thank you. So what happens next . We have plans to meet several more types throughout this year. My sister is getting married in january on a cruise so well attend that together and shell finish up school in the next year and hopefully well see where it goes. Oh, my god. Reporter the transformers films have long transformed the world of cgi special effects as we know it. And the latest transformers age of extinction is no exception. We caught up with the allstar cast on the heels of the World Premiere in hong kong, one of the films locations. You know, its kind of like shooting in new york but on steroids because its bigger and faster and theres a lot more people and dont kind of stop to see whats going on. Theyre just kind of a part of the movie, as well so a lot of fun. Reporter along the way there were some hiccups. I got lost several times but then i always walk around cities im not accustomed to so thank god for the goodness of the Chinese People here in hong kong. Can i see . Reporter and the cast got to squeeze in some down time. We had some dinners together. A little cluster here. We had a couple of those. A couple of late nights. Reporter but the icing on the cake was working with groundbreaking director michael bey. Its insane. You know, when you film it, you know, you use your imagination but what michael does with these films and the cgi that goes in it is really mindblowing. The amazing thing about michael he sees it all in his head. Its what theyre made of. I have never made a movie that was quite on this scale before and certainly with this number of explosions and the first day that i experienced those explosions i was completely shocked. I remember that day. Yeah. I was afraid i wasnt going to survive the rest of the shooting but it was thrilling. It was really thrilling. Reporter for Good Morning America, Cameron Mathison, abc news, los angeles. All right, transformers age of extinction opens next friday, june 27th and even more exciting the entire cast will be right here in times square, all next week and coming up a story weve all been waiting for, robin, with an inspiring overcomer. This he need a life path to follow. Reporter jeff keith, founder for the center of for survivorship is helping to pave that path for cancer survivors. You have chemotherapy and radiation. Theres no postcare. Survivors will tell you that they feel like theyre dropped off a cliff when theyre done with treatment. Yeah, 1974 and set the tone for the rest of my life. Reporter for jeff and the tipped 14. 5 million cancer survivors in the u. Reporter the center focuses on healing the mind, body and spirit. Hello, everyone. We look at the whole person so i dont let them get away with high Blood Pressure or cholesterol. What do you get out of a class like this . What is it that youre looking for and what is it that you get out of it . I think when i go to the store now and i pick things up and i want to purchase them, i flip it, look at the label, i look at the salt content, sodium, added sugars. Im much more conscious. Reporter its not just the exercise and nutrition classes but also the sense of community that has helped members like Cecile Galvin recover. When youre done you have anxiety of is it going to come back or not so the Cancer Center has been great for that because we all have the same unspoken goal, we can talk about it if we want to but we dont have to. Reporter invaluable life lessons. You know whats great about this place, there are many wonderful aspects of it. Its not in a hospital. 90 of all survivors that ive talked to over the last 30 years, they dont want to go back to the hospital but make no mistake, you come in here and youre a survive, we dont baby you. We treat you like a normal person and what we want to do is raise your bar. Reporter 19yearold aaron gaborman who battled cancer as a child says thats just what he needs. You have said all along you want to be known as a fighter. Yeah. And is does this place allow you to live that out. Exactly. I did fight and i did overcome cancer and i did overcome this disease and now i can work out to build my body back from what it destroyed. So its great. Whats your ultimate goal. Really at the end of the day were selling hope. Selling hope. Its priceless. It sure is and studies have shown that exercise does have a positive effect on recovery and in some cases might even help prevent recurrence.
