Helicopters and crews are scouring remote forests looking for him and david wright has the story. Reporter a flashout search as rescuers scour this dusty corner of california for missing firefighter, father and husband, mike herdman. Day one they began at a place called doe flat and you can see the yellow path they took up here. Reporter herdman, an avid outdoorsman was on a weekend camping trip with tyler byers. Byers told authorities he last saw his friend chasing after his dog duke who had run into a creek, barefoot only wearing a tshirt and shorts and simply disappeared according to byers. We found his backpack and footprints in the direction he was last seen going so we, you know, were starting from there and working our way out methodically rock by rock, bush by bush. Reporter the campsite where he was last spotted is two days hike into the back country here, an area almost twice the size of the grand canyon. Its remote, inaccessible terrain that will make him that much harder to find, that much harder to report him missing. It took the friend all weekend to hike out and call for help. Is there any hint at all, any indication at all of foul play . No, no, not at this time. Reporter herdman who has a 6yearold daughter had planned to be home for fathers day. Good morning, robin. Nearly 4 1 2 years ago Michael Farren was arrested in his mansion for allegedly brutalizing his wife. Now after a myriad of appeals delaying the trial and giving up on representing himself jury selection starts today. This morning, jury selection is set to begin in the attempted murder trial of john farren a former white house lawyer for george w. Bush now on the other side of the law. Farren is accused of brutally beating his exwife at their connecticut mansion in 2010. At times allegedly hitting her with a metal flashlight. He put his hands around my neck and in the same motion he tackled me to the floor. Reporter at a 2013 civil trial, mary farren testified the alleged attack was prompted by her serving her husband with divorce papers. In december, that civil jury awarded her nearly 29 million. John farren represented himself but never actually showed up to court claiming via email he was in the hospital. In the civil case he didnt even show up so a huge verdict was issued against him. But now hes going to have to be there and now his freedom is at stake. Reporter farren will not be representing himself in the criminal trial. He reportedly told a judge last week that the evidence against him was taking too large an emotional toll. Its always a bad idea to represent yourself in a criminal case and its probably even a worse idea to represent yourself if youre pursuing a mental defect defense. Reporter if convicted farren could spend up to 70 years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and farren who has been free on bond actually requested plea discussions on prison time indicating that he might be thinking about changing his not guilty plea. We know about the importance of using sunscreen but now many are turning to clothes for protection. We put some pieces to the test to see if they really hold up against the power of the sun. Summer days, so many of us love spending them outside. But as gma investigates learned, all of that fun in the sun can be damaging and dangerous. I am being examined by a skin analysis machine which shows sun damage to the skin before it reaches the surface. Oh, no. Ah see all of those green lines, they are wrinkles in the making. Is this definitely going to show up at some point or can i do anything now . Sunscreen. Reporter but dermatologist Elizabeth Hale tells me thats not the only risk. One in five americans will get skin cancer at some point in their lives. Dr. Hale saysing there ale a new defense. Sun protective clothing. That can allow people to be outside for mow prolonged periods and protect their skin and doesnt wear off the way sunscreen does. Reporter some of it has tightly woven fabric often treated with chemicals to absorb uv rays. Just as sunscreen has an spf rating, all clothing has a upf rating which stands for ultraviolet protection factor. The darker the fabric and tighter the weave the higher the upf. Kaitlyn kennedy wears it almost every day. She was diagnosed with skin cancer at 18. How has it affected your life. I still enjoy myself but now have to make sure i have an umbrella, a hat, my sun protective clothing and lotion on. Reporter so does it really have the upf it claims . Gma investigates tested five items, all claiming to have a upf between 50 and 100. We asked a lab to check the upf before and after washing the clothing according to the manufacturers instructions. It found that our 20yearold gma intern katherine is already developing brown spots and fine lines. I definitely will be looking into wearing sunscreen clothing. We turn now to an encouraging weight loss story from a woman who ptried to get in shape unti her sister asked her to be her maid of honor. That was the motivation she needed to cut her weight in half. Abcs Bianna Golodryga has the story. Reporter weddings, a monumental time in ones life. But for jamie she never thought that someone elses wedding would change her own life. Growing up i was always the biggest, tallest kid. You know, i would just come home after school, maybe not fitting in very well and would turn to that food. Reporter the 30yearold Mental Health therapist tried everything to lose weight. But after getting the call in the fall of 2006 to be maid of honor in her stepsisters wedding she had that aha moment. I knew i needed to regain control of my life that i let go. Reporter her aunt recommended she try Weight Watchers and by the time of the wedding in june of 2007 jamie reached a milestone, 80 pounds gone. I got good compliments which gave me even more motivation to keep going. Reporter and keep going, she did. After the birthher daughter anna in 2010 jamies weight loss hit a plateau but in january of 2013 she recommitted to her goal and picked up running losing 160 pounds total. I went from a size 24 and now im into a size 4. Half of me is gone. Shedding more than half of her original weight of 304 pounds. She just exudes beauty, not that she wasnt before, but just the confidence, its amazing. Reporter jamie thankful for her husbands support along the way. Its amazing. Thats what kind of makes the first one work, the stories are great and you fall in love with the couples but then you feel that all these characters care about each other so when we get to vegas for what is kind of a not so great idea, Bachelor Bachelorette Party on the wedding weekend on paper it makes for a great movie but in life the dumbest thing you can do in life. Michael, you were supposed to be the best man and kevins character think he is and thats when everything starts going awry. Thats kind of the story of my life. [ laughter ] you know, kevin just stands in front and then all then he just kind of coops the attention at that point, you know what i mean so, yeah, i was supposed to be the best man but, i dont know, made for a better movie with this man being the best man. I love the way it was done. Such an innocent mistake but cedric, you know, my character would assume that it was him and at that moment im standing there he didnt even lock eyes with me. Mike didnt even lock eyes with me but i knew he had to be talking to me and these guys put in a position, just let him have it. Let him and mikes character dominic is such a good guy, hes like, its okay, you know, mike, let him have it. We know what you meant. Hes so honored but theyre willing to let me have this because my character needs it. I need validation so much. So much in this movie. Just in the movie, not in real life. Real life i need nothing. I put on a party shirt. Im happy. Im happy, baby. But its what so great the women have a little more time on screen. Theyre amazing. And the way that you all separately come together it just absolutely works, romany. Every time we did get to work with the girls on the set it felt leak a privilege because we didnt see them much but we knew they were having a great time and out instagraming us and tweeting us. Yeah. On set and wed run into the girls and it was like a new energy came about when we saw them just in the hallways. We were going to come on Good Morning America in bikinis to show them out but oh. We we werent. Terrence was the only one that felt like that. Really .
