The big story this morning is developing news hundreds of septa Regional Rail workers went on strike this after talks between septa and two unions failed to reach a new contract deal. Reporter eva, trains have been parked and workers walked out as the negotiations broke down. Septa Railway Workers and electrical workers have gone on strike. Heres what that means. 13 Regional Rail lines have broken down. That will affect 60,000 passengers. The trains go to newark, the airport and trenton. The el if the broad street line are still running. They service 5 of septa riders. The next step is governor corbett is expected to ask president obama to a point a president ial emergency board to mediate. That would force workers to return to their jobs for 240 days. The standstill has been part of a longstanding dispute over wages. I want to thank the National Mediation board and the Governors Office for their efforts to try to to avert this work stoppage. Unfortunately we have been notified by the blet and the ibw as of 12 01 a. M. Their workers will walk off the job. Im not as worried as what they will say or how it will affect them. We have friends and family that live in the community. We are from this community, we did not want this to result in a stoppage of work. Which is why we repeatedly offered to settle the dispute in a binding manner in a process that has been offered to us. Now the union has pushed to have both sides meet in binding arbitration as you just heard, septa has turned that down, they think they can get a better deal in negotiations. Its interesting to note that the labor union was contacted by governor corbetts office if they didnt put an end to the stop work order there would be reprecussions. Reporter well, eva, about 400 workers have walked off the job forcing 13 Regional Rail lines to be shut down. Now, those labor negotiations broke down at 12 01 overnight. At that point the septa Railroad Engineers and electrical workers went on strike. Heres what that means, the 13 regional lines have been shut down indefinitely. The lines run to places like newark, the airport and to trenton. However, bus services on septa buses trolleys and subways like the broad street line and the el those are still running. Those service about 85 of septa riders. Septa is pushing riders to use alternative forms of transportation in the meantime. They have posted an interruption plan online. Union reps have pushed for binding arbitration, but septa declined saying they can get a better deal in negotiations. Were open to discussions. If septa is willing to make substantive movement, well discuss options. We felt that one issue that was a Sticking Point was something we could stin to discuss, we did ask for a two week and he thinks with or without the pay raises that we had offered to the employees, those offers were denied. Reporter now, the next step is governor corbett is expecting to ask president obama to step in to force both sides into federal mediation that could happen as early as today that would force the workers back on the job for 240 days. Septa said that will push back how long this will go on. In another 240 days there will be strikes again. The labor unions say they are contacted by governor corbetts office and told if they didnt stop the strike there would be reprecussions, so at this point theres no idea how long it will last.
