Good afternoon we begin with breaking news in Montgomery County, a firefighter is in cust after he allegedly held four other firefighters hostage in elkins park. Chopper 6 hd was over head when that firefighter was taken into custody. Police responded there just before 11 00 this morning and a man came up with his hands up about an hour later. Vernon odom just arrived on the scene. Reporter i am live at willow and penrose can you look up the street and see it now the situation is relaxing now, the one suspect has been arrested according to Police Reports at 10 40 this morning a gunman got into the building and took four firefighters hostage and held them there for some time. We watched this drama play out here this morning, Cheltenham Police guns drawn and s. W. A. T. Team at one point they enterred through the garage door, they brought the first person out we believe that was the hostage and three other persons were brought out some of them in handcuffs but they proved not to be suspects as police were thoroughly trying to figure out what was going on and who was who in this confrontation and hostage situation this morning. That is the light of the now and we see Police Officials coming down to talk to us and give us information. Sergeant what can you tell us right now. Ill talk to you in a bit . They are telling us that the police chief of cheltenham will be down here to talk to us and tell us what the situation was and how they resolved it here late this morning in elkins park, this is elkins park postal address this is the small town of lamott. A small town in the area, known as elkins park as least by the postal destination. One firefighter disgruntled apparently was the gunman that went into the building and held several hostages and held them for about an hour. Vernon odom channel 6 action news. Thank you vernon you got word that everybody is save, lets switch to a live picture from chopper 6 hd there at the Police Station we watched the van leave with the exfirefighter and its backed up to the Police Station, we are told that the person was walked into the Police Station as you heard with vernon the police chief in cheltenham expected to give us details in a few minutes, hopefully more on the name and identity and what went on this this person is so upset they decided to handle this situation today. There inside the Cheltenham Police department, going through the opening steps and getting arrested and dealing with this issue. Its more breaking news coming to us from berks county and traffic at a stand still at the major interstate because of a deadly crash involving the fedex truck and westbound lanes have been shut down since 5 00 this morning and at least one person is dead and drivers have been stuck in place for quite sometime on that highway, john henry is live at the scene. Reporter good afternoon take a look here, i78, westbound i78 west of the allentown and one truck driver is dead and some wreckage is moved and they opened one lane westbound at this point to allow the backlog of vehicles to pass they have been there since sun up. The grinding accident occurred this and morning, the westbound lanes of 548 is still closed. A tractor trailer lay on its side, the car involved was put on a flat bed, state Police Investigators are studying the wreckage figuring out what caused the mishap. It forced drivers of this heavily used interstate to find detours. Well you can look now at a live picture here, backed up traffic westbound continues to move past the wreckage, some of that wreckage still there including that large fedex truck, i78 westbound remains closed to new traffic and they are allowing the people that are backed up there for many, many hours to come out of that area. Murder charges are approved for the girlfriend of slain Darby Township officer darby hudson. They are in the process of filing a warrant against tieana finch she will be charged with murder and related charges for the death of hudson. The manhunt for an escape prisoner in virginia just ended moments ago they say he was just captured in washington d. C. He overpowered a guard at a virginia hospital and took his gun around 3 00 this morning, he fled wearing only a hospital gown he was arrested this month on a federal bank robbery charged and was moved to the hospital after a Suicide Attempt on friday Police Believe he carjacked a woman after his escaped. Again the escaped prisoner from virginia was just arrested into washington, d. C. Police are looking for the people that sucker punched a septa driver yesterday. David henry has the latest. The latest update on the hostage situation at the lamott fire company. All hostages are unharmed and he is unharmed everybody has been taken for interview and processing. He was a firefighter that was in dispute with the fire company up until yesterday. Were there any medical conditions . No not that i know of. He was a paid firefighter . No they are a volunteer firefighter. This morning he goes in with a gun and holds four many them hostage. How close was the shot fired . I dont know yet because we found the strike point and we need to interview the four hostages, we dont know that. Did he specifically target these four or were they just there at the time . I cant get into that but obviously he targeted someone yes. The one firefighter was young 19 20 how did they hold up in there . They seemed to come out pretty good, i talked to all four of them therk are nervous and upset obviously not a great situation but they muddled through it. We took them to the station and well take care of them up there. Any idea of the suspects name . No not yet. He will be charged with what ultimately . Well talk about that inside. But obviously you cant take people hostage with a gun. And firing a weapon. Firing a weapon too. We are live now, what goes into resolving a situation like this . First thing trying to make contact with the perpetrator and talk him into doing the right thing instead of going the other way. Hostage negotiators in cheltenham were in conversation with him and that worked out good and he released one right away but he had three more, so you go through that and bring your s. W. A. T. Teams in and join forces with other teams from the area and then try to do this as safely as possible with nobody getting hurt including the hostage taker. What about his demeanor . He was very upset. For clarification he fired one shot . He fired one shot before police were even notified. Into a wall . Into a wall. Was it one of firefighters that called police . I dont know who called police yet because im down here. Were there other people in the build that ran out . There were other people in the building in the front and they heard and they left. How did he enter . I dont know. Did he say anything i cant get into that. There was verbal threats yes. I cant get into that right now. It seems strange he was let go from a volunteer job and come back with a gun. Any trouble with them before . Our firefighters are dedicated people and take it seriously and they do a tough job for no money and no pay but they are dedicated to it when you get terminated or lose the job for some reason its traumatic for the firefighter. Any idea why he was terminated . I dont have that right now. No issues between the suspect and any of these hostages . I didnt say that, i didnt want to get into it right now. I dont have the exact age, approximately 30 years old. Do you know how long he has been with the department . I dont know that. What do you have to say about the four guys that were in the building how did they hold up . They did well very well as a matter of fact, i dont know if i would have handled it as well address they did. Nobody got hurt. Its always the best possible outcome when nobody gets hurt. Did he do anything or just hold them hostage . Just held them hostage. Did he call anybody or ask to speak with anyone, i dont know about that. The firehouse is being processed as a crime scene and well get done with that and it will be back in service as a fire company. How long did the siege last . We were done at 11 47. About an hour we were here. What kind of gun . A handgun, i dont know the exact kind, i didnt see it. Did he get it illegally . I dont know that. The front door was open and he was in the basement we cleared the first floor and we got the hostage negotiators close and we were doing that and they gave up he gave up. Take us through the scene im not positive i dont know exactly where they were held. I came down here. He came in through the front door, and some how goes down to the basement . I am assuming that.
