Get right to 69th street terminal no problems. But then you have nowhere to go. Market frankford line not running. Patco is running so thats still running. Get on at patco and get on at 15th and 16th and get off at eighth and market so that will save a little bit of you your walk. This is a live look at the schuylkill at montgomery drive. No major delays, expect extra people on the roads, parking garages everything is going to be at full capacity matt and tam. Thank you, karen. Lets get you started on where the septa negotiations stands. Action News Reporter Annie Mccormick is lie in front of the sheraton in center city. That is where septa officials and Union Leaders have had no luck hashing things out. Theyre supposed to to be back t the table but its not clear if and when well see any progress. Good morning, annie. Reporter good morning, tamala. At last check there was nothing yet determined about what time they will go back to the table. Last night shortly after midnight the president of local 234 the Transit Workers Union said that they were open to negotiate throughout the Early Morning hours but at last check with a septa spokesperson there were no new negotiations overnight. Well, take a look at this video. This is video of picketers at bustleton and benner. 4700 plus local tw u2 34 members stopped work on the job around 12 01. Septa suggested the union work through the negotiations and past the midnight deadline but the president of local 234 willie brown said they had to draw a line though in the sand after two years of negotiations and thats why they are striking. When they said and voted that they would do he so. Now brown said that they did agree on a few minor things. Driver fatigue however still an issue and healthcare but the main Sticking Point is pensions. Now yesterday sources said both sides were millions of dollars app parter on that issue. A source said last night that management gets a pension on full pay while Union Workers get a pension on partial pay and that is what is the deal breaker. Now brown did address the media shortly after midnight. Heres what he he had to say. We have conceded on a lot of things. Weve been working this for two years. You know, and the thing that gets me the most is when you consider pensions when you ask about the pensions were not being agreed he dee. You know, i think septa slapped the riding public in the face slapped the taxpayers in the face when they told you that he going to do pension reform. Instead of doing pension reform what they did was lined their pockets. Reporter now, septa released a statement and said in part that mr. Brown walked away from a Contract Offer that would have provided his members pay raises enhanced pension benefits, maintained healthcare coverage levels and continued job security. Now, septa also put in their statement that if this goes up until november 7th and it does threaten that septa will still be on strike for november 8th which is of course election day, that they will go to federal court and request an injunction since this is a federal election. Now, at this point septa is saying they dont know how long that this could go on, the transit Union Workers saying that anything is possible as far as negotiations go. Both Governor Wolf and also mayor kenney he are urging both sides to stay at the table and get this done. For now reporting live outside of the sheraton in center city, Annie Mccormick channel6 action news. Back to you. Allall right, thanks for the latest annie. The Philadelphia School district is open today in spite of the septa strike. More than 50,000 Philadelphia School children who ride the trains buses and trolleys will have to find another way to get to school this morning. Yellow school buses in philadelphia will continue to operate. Students who normally ride septa but cant make it to school because of the strike will be marked as having an excused absence if youre tardy because of the strike your late arrival will also be excused. John rawlins is live at the 69th Street Transportation Center in upper darby. John that is where what is running and what is not running converges this morning. Reporter thats right. Normally 69th street station is a connecting point many people who live in the western suburbs or in Delaware County will take buses or trolleys here then get on the el and head towards center city or West Philadelphia. Likewise folks in West Philadelphia will grab a bus or the el head here and then connect to the trolleys and work where they work somewhere in Delaware County. Its a normally smoothly running situation but not today. The city transit is stopped including the el since the strike is on in the city transit side. Around the corner here is victory lane. Some of the early pickets set up here overnight. About a dozen or so were there this morning. They were staying warm around the fire. They are many of these folks operate or maintain the market frankford line which of course terminates here at 69th street station. In the meantime though early commuters have been scrambling to find a work around all this. People have to get to work. Frustrated but motivated. I have to get to work. Reporter dante lowry normally grabs a bus in West Philadelphia and then transfers to a suburban trolley here at 69th street station. But with the strike that means there is no city transit operating this morning. Just have to walk 17 blocks. Have to walk 17 blocks see if a 104 is running. Reporter court he knee helms was leaded in the opposite direction from Delaware County where there is bus service she was headed to West Philadelphia where there is not. I came from ups hub and im going to 63rd and vine. Reporter so you were able to get a suburban bus here. And thats it. Reporter now you got to get home. Yeah. Reporter how are you going to do that . I dont know. I guess im going to be walking. Reporter so, a lot of people looking at a a lot of different options none of them particularly attractive. Some are cases where people have been walking 45 minutes to an hour. Some people paying either for a taxi or for uber trying to get a friend to come up and pick them up. People are scrambling as they trio get around to get back and forth to work. Live at 69th street station in upper darby, john rawlins channel6 action news. Back to you. John thanks so much. Another action cam shot for us right now showing all of the people waiting at the bridesburg septa station this morning in the frankford section of philadelphia. This is where you can pick up the trenton Regional Rail line which again is running but then when you get here some people might take a bus or might get on the frankford el line. Those things are not running because of the strike so perhaps were seeing so many people here at this hour at 6 10 in the morning because we dont have as many options for people to get to work and school. Of course were posting the information that you need at 6abc. Com septa strike as the situation develops check for live updates and a list of plans released by the City Government schools buses and more. He so chilly in the morning commute. The evening might be too. I think theres a fair assumption to make a lot of people are coming in and then walking. Its going to be chilly this morning. Storm tracker6 live double scan though shows us that were dry. As we take a look outside we have tranquil conditions. Not much wind out there so you get your coat on like you saw those folks on the Regional Rail platform we just showed you a moment ago and get ready for cool temperature. At least theres not a lot of wind in your face. Your temperature in philadelphia has dipped to 40 degrees. Just outside the city we have a lot of spots in the 30s. Again winds calm right now but definitely cool enough for a pretty decent heavy coat. Maybe some extra carry gear as well. Well he see plenty of sunshine in a little bit and then there will be some high clouds streaking through at times today. Overall we expect it to be mostly sunny. But its cool. 39 degrees by 8 oclock in philadelphia. By 10 oclock 46 and by noon 54. If your kids are coming home from School Without septa this afternoon look for a temperature in philadelphia of about 62 with light winds mostly sunny skies. Actually not a bad afternoon to be walking around. Then by 5 oclock down to 60 and by 6 oclock as matt mentioned were back down into the cool zone with a temperature of about 58, 59 degrees. So, cool on the way into work, cool on the way home today. 62 is your high at about 3 oclock in philadelphia. 60 in allentown. 61 in cape may. And actually not much of a difference in temperatures from north to south today. Everybody looking at mainly sunny skies and cool conditions. Your exclusive accuweather 7day shows some changes he though. Todays high 62, a flies start for november. Tomorrow its not going to be as bad if the strike is still going on. Were on or about 50 in the morning and an afternoon high of 73. And then thursday morning probably only down around 60, maybe a little bit below that also very warm and a high of 78 degrees. Now, its problem on thursday afternoon comes with a cold front that could bring us a strong shower or a thunderstorm. Maybe even some gusty storms in some spots on thursday afternoon and evening. Then behind that system we are cooling down again. 56 is the high on friday. 60 on saturday. Fall back one hour on your clocks when you go to bed saturday night. Daylight savings time ends and then a high of just 59 on sunday. Thanks, david. 6 12 now. Our breaking coverage of the septa strike continues in just a moment. The walkout has halted Public Transit across the city. Later new Jersey Drivers get ready to buck unat the gas pump. Karen. Were already seeing volume on the roads. Check out the delay on i95 here at academy. Thats your southbound traffic. A lot more people driving to center city. Were already heavy approaching academy to cottman because of the septa strike. Well talk about whats running and not running when action news comes right back. 6 15. It is tuesday. Chopper6 arrived at the septa Temple University station. Now again, all Regional Rail is still running and many Regional Rail services converge at this point right now but were expecting a lot more people to be using that because you dont have all those other options with septa because of the strike with the buses, with the frankford el, with the subway. So, could be a lot busier here at the temple u station. People are already harried in the morning a lot of confusion and chaos out there. Lets get you over to karen who has more he details on what you need to know. The thing about there Temple Station is that we normally see delays with Regional Rails heading to temple cause so many people do and were not quite at full capacity. So even on a good day you would see delays and sometimes issues with overcrowding and this is not a good day. So expect even worse problems with that. So, this strike that were talking about what do you do with no city buses running . No broad street subway . No el. Trolleys not running . A lot of people turning to the Regional Rails. You may have to use Regional Rails in a way you dont northly. Coming from northeast philadelphia usually take a city bus you cant do that but you can take the trenton line. The trenton shrine still running so you could take that coming in from the northeast and there are stops lots of them torresdale holmesburg. You can take those bridesburg all throws to come into the city. In north philadelphia and you usually take the broad street subway thats luge if thats not running but you can get to the broad street station that will help you. Thats at north broad and lehigh avenue and there are lots of as muchs running through that station and they could take you right to jefferson he so that can cut out some of your problem so there are some ways around it but youre going to have to use the Regional Rails maybe in a way youre not used to and maybe you dont want to because there have already been issues with overcrowding with Regional Rails. Not quite at full capacity after the problems they noticed with the silver liner cars. Its not going to be easy. Well be here around the clock on the air and online. Now looking at your majors expect extra congestion. This is 295 looks busy here approaching rancocas woods. We had an accident there was on the median. Now one of the cars off to the shoulder so watch for that if you are on 295 here heading northbound towards mount holly. In evesham township Burlington County weve got elmwood road shut down between green brook drive and lanny lane. An accident in lower providence as well hitting some of the suburbs on Germantown Pike at old cross keys road. Your majors well expect some heavier delays. Lets take a look right now at the temperatures through the region. Its a cold morning to be waiting for a bus. Quakertown 29 degrees. Pottstown 29. 40 degrees in center city. If youre trying get on a crowded train, 31 in hammonton, 36 degrees in dover, delaware but at least its dry, tam. Okay, thank you, karen. And we continue our Live Team Coverage with action News Reporter bob brooks hes live at the olney station on the 5400 block of mascher street. Bob, the situation there has changed from the last time we checked in with you. Reporter yeah, good morning. It definitely has. People are steadily starting to come in here. A large group of people just got pick up by the Regional Rail line none of which these people ride this on a regular basis. This is all just part of their inconvenience in their routine this morning trying get into the city. I want to bring up some video here. Youll see that first train coming in here picking these people up and before they went on i walked up to that platform, i asked them if anyone rides the Regional Rail line on a regular basis. They all paused for a second looked at he me like you a crazy and then they all proceeded to yell at me no, that twenty three didnt. I also spoke with two riders, one who had to get up almost an hour early, walk 40 minutes down here to olney he to catch this train into the city. The other his son really depends on septa to stay on schedule. Heres why. He has autism and so hes used to a regular routine. Now he has to just totally throw things out. Reporter do you live around here . Did you have to come far. I live in hunting park. So it took me 40 minutes to walk from hunting bark to here. Reporter that had to be cold. Yeah but im pretty well bundled upism im sure that wasnt a fun experience. No its not. At least i have a way to get into work. A lot of workers dont want to try to get to work. Reporter at least he is staying optimistic. A look live out at the platform here in olney, you can see a bunch of people starting to gather around waiting for that next train. I can almost began he tea that none of those people typically ride this train during this time. Another option that you have is uber pool. If youre familiar with the ride share app uber, uber pool expanded their service to cover the entire septa system through the strike. Thats something to keep in mind. Its a lot cheaper than regular uber. Uber pool is 65 percent cheaper so in order to get around during the strike you might want to keep that in mind to keep your costs down. You can only imagine so many more people there trying to get on and in some cases karen you have been telling us be ready for the train to just overshoot you and keep going because its going to be packed full of people. Theyve added extra service to try to stop that from happening but this is one of those situations were all watching to see how its evolving. Problem is those trains have already been overcrowded even before the strike as you head especially towards temple. So here are some of the latest. The airport line already reporting 10 minute delays on that train. Media elwyn 16 minute delays. West trenton line 21 minutes delay with the west trenton line already Lansdale Doylestown 12 minute delay. Trenton line tender minute delay. Already seeing people trying to make Regional Rails. Already getting overcrowded because of everything not running. Now were looking at the schuylkill. This is at girard. Thats your eastbound traffic headed towards center city already slow. In the afternoon lots of sunshine, not much wind out there this morning. Lets go on topher to karen rogers. Shell be leading our o Team Coverage of the septa strike and we have reporters fanned out across the city talking with commuters and keeping an eye on any progress on contract talks. Well get to all of you in a moment. First up dave murphy and the accuweather forecast. David. If you are without septa and youre hoofing it this morning its going to be coolly so dress warmly. Sake a look at satellite. We have lack of cloud cover. It looks like a little bit more might try and inch into the region a little later this morning but well start out sunny he in a little while. Temperatures are cool, though. Were down to 40 degrees in philadelphia. And just 30 in allentown. 36 in trenton. 38 in wilmington. 33 he in millville. 46 in cape may. In the city though pretty cool. Theres not much wind so thats g as we roll through the day over the next 12 hours youre looking at a cool one. 40 degrees by 7 oclock, 46 by 10 oclock. By plan to a little better, 54 degrees and then the afternoon features sun with mixing clouds. A high of 62 degrees so if your kids are coming home at 3 oclock and they normally take septa now they got to walk its any other a bad afternoon for that. 6 oclock back into the upper 50s and temperatures starting to go down from there. Karen looks like theres a bump up in numbers for the next couple days which could help commuters without septa and well check that out in the seven day. The thing about this strike is it seems to be affecting everyone. Obviously if you take septa in the city it affects you. Regional rail already seeing delays. Already seeing extra traffic on the roads. Really impacting any way you get to work. City buses not running, 79 different bus routes none of them are running. Suburban buses they are running. Broad and market frankford line not running. Septa trolleys 10, 11, 13, 15, 34, 36 not running. The 101, 102 norristown high speedline they are running. But when you take Regional Rails a an option already experiencing problem. The problems from the summer havent been resolved. Already seeing delays here. The wilmington newark line 10 minute delays, 21 minute delay already on the west trenton line train 313. Paoli thorndale 11 minutes late. Trenton 10 minutes late. Look at the Chestnut Hill west a 40 minute delay right now. Youve been outside waiting for the train for 40 minutes. If youre on train 812. So already seeing problems right now. This is new and just coming in and were going to be here as this all evolves so we can see how to deal with it. You splay to use Regional Railing in a way you havent before if youre able to get service and youre not talking about overcrowding issues. So the problem is the 101, one oh he two, right, theyre running. Norristown high speedline theyre running. Take there no problem to 69th street. Then you get there and nothing is running so you have no options. You cant take the market frankford line. To try to cut some of your walking out take the Regional Rails and you can take them between 30th right here and jefferson to cut out some of your walk patco is running get on at patco at 15th, 16th get off at 18th and market. I just want to show you some of these roads. Already seeing heavier delays than we would normally he see. This is i95 add woodhaven. That southbound traffic not usually this jammed at this point. Jammed from woodhaven to cottman and from the betsy ross bridge to girard so well be following this through the morning matt and tam. Good to have you here. Thank you, karen. Team coverage continues with Annie Mccormick live at the sheraton in center city. Which is where septa officials and Union Leaders have been trying to hash this out. Last talks were last night and were told the tone of them was tense. Annie, what is the update and what can we expect today . Reporter yeah, tam, at this point this really boilings down to pensions. That is what is putting this really at a halt and what is leading everyone to a strike at this point. Now shortly after midnight the Union President said that he would continue negotiations throughout the Early Morning. However, a spokesperson from septa told me this morning that there were no new negotiations overnight. Well, take a look at this video. This is video of some one picket line that were seeing in the northeast. There are many that were expecting across the city. This is at bustleton and benner. More than 4700 workers are part of tw u2 34. They stopped work on the job at 12 he 01. Septa suggested the union work through the negotiation and past the midnight deadline to Keep Services running. The president of local 234 willie brown said they had to draw a line in the sand after two years of negotiations and they said that they had to strike. Now, brown said they did agree on a few minor things. Driver fatigue, however, is still an issue and so is healthcare but like we said earlier, the main Sticking Point is pensions. Yesterday sources said both sides were tens of millions of dollars apart on that issue. A source last night said management gets a pension on full pay while Union Workers get a pension on partial pay and that is what is the deal breaker. Now brown did address the media just after midnight. Heres part of what he he had to say. You have Economic Issues as far as pensions. You have healthcare. You also have things like i said come to driver fatigue. We need to be able to do something to not have our operators run and and down the street half asleep. Most people they work from nine 00 phil 5 00 you get adequate time to restly our people dont do that so we have to fight for those rights. What about pensions . Pensions, were fighting for pensions also. Reporter septa released a statement and said in part that mr. Brown walked away from a Contract Offer that would have provided his members pay raises enhanced pension benefits, maintained healthcare coverage levels and also continue job security. The big question is how long could this strike last. Its hard to gauge that compared to past strikes that the city has seen in 2009, it last the six days, the late 90s it was much longer than that. But this year we have an election. That election is in a week. Septa said in their Statement Last night that they would go to federal court for an injunction to make sure that this strike would not happen on election day since this is a very important election with both congressional and president ial candidates on the ballot. At this time though, the last time we heard from him, the president of the union had said that anything could happen. They want to get back to the table. They want to negotiate. The governor and the mayor are saying get this done. For now reporting live in center city, outside of the sheraton Annie Mccormick channel6 action news. Back to you. Annie id say commuters are joining in with that get it done attitude. Lets switch thrive 69th street station in upper darby. Action News Reporter john rawlins is live at one of several locations where commuters are going to hit a dead end this morning. Reporter hi, well, certainly not business as usual here today, thats for sure. Normally its a preit seamless transfer of commuters many people come in on the suburban lines go out on the city transit line. Vice versa come in on the city transit line go out on the suburban line. Not today because the city transit is on strike. All this caught some folks unaware today despite the run up in news coverage. City transit workers on strike a new reality. This upper darby man headed for a job in center city only learned there is no el Service Today after he he got here to the terminal. How long is it going to be like thissism well, they dont know. They went out and they arent saying how long its going the last. Theogony flo until they negotiate a set. Thats messing with People Livelihood mannism others had a plan. Theresa majors of West Philadelphia got a ride from her daughter. From here shell take a suburban trolley that is operating to norristown. I have my plan cause im used to it so ive been through this before so. Reporter youre a veteran. Yes. Got to get to center city. Reporter no el. No el, no bus. Reporter how you going to do it. Well, im waiting for the shuttle. Theres a shuttle supposed to be coming up here 6 30 to pick me up. Reporter your employer is running a shuttle. Yes, yes they are. So in the meantime im going to walk over have a little breakfast. Reporter that sounded like a good plan. This employer a large center city hotel, others from Halfway House operators to the university of pennsylvania also using shuttle buses to move their workers to and from the 69th street station here to try to get them into work. But most folks seem to be out on their own so theyre considering things like uber, taking taxis, driving or in many cases just walking. Live at 69th street terminal john rawlins channel6 action news. Back to you all. Thank you john. Lets take a look at another dead end situation for a lot of commuters this morning. This is a live look at the bridesburg station in the frankford section of philadelphia. This is where the trenton Regional Rail line arrives and again Regional Rail is moving so then they would stop here and then they would maybe catch a bus or get on the frankford el and that is not running. Weve seen some trains arrive here in bridesburg and i see one in the distance, i dont know if we can wait for it to arrive but they get here and its already loaded with people because of so many people needing to use Regional Rails. They dont have any other option so people may be waiting for this train coming up and they might not have much room to fit in. Lets take you over to chap per six. This is the overbrook station. Now the Regional Rail line the Paoli Thorndale that comes down from bryn mawr Paoli Thorndale goes down into center city, you see people waiting on the tracks, that is one way to get down into the city. This is the bridesburg station on the trenton Regional Rail lines those folks waiting hoping that when the train finally does get them many running a little bit late this morning, they will be able to press their way into the cars which are crowded, make their way down into center city but they will not be able to use septa buses, trolleys trains, anything that they are used to using to get closer to those work and schooling symptoms. They will be stuck having to go to those Regional Rail stops. Karen rogers wants to he reiterate what is not run dag. cause its affecting so many people, rights. So, weve got it scrolling at the bottom of your screen. What do you do with no city buses, no broad street, no el, trolleys not running. So lets talk about using Regional Rails and i think this map is a good way to do it. So if youre coming from the northeast if normally you would take a city bus not an option but the trenton line is running so the trenton line has lots of stops. You can get it torresdale homes burg bridesburg and you can take that into the he city so thats one option. North philadelphia what do you do with no broad street subway. Thats huge i know but can you get to the broad street station . So the broad street station is right here. Thats north broad and lehigh avenue. If you get there there are a lot of different lines that service that area and they could take you all the way to jefferson so you get there at the Jefferson Station and that will help you out. So there are a couple of options to help you out. We havent talked about this one, University City station. That is serviced by elwyn by newark by the airport line so several ways to get you to university he city. So there are a couple different things. Maybe youre not used to using Regional Rails because youve laid off of them because the problems in the souler havent been fixed already seeing delays with there. I wonder as we get closer to the city if some of those trains are going to be overcrowded and bypass it and this is one of those situations were just going to have to watch it evolve. Thats why were on air, were online ive been doing facebook lives, well be doing them around the clock as well to ages your questions and kind of help you through it as we see what happens.
