Showers this morning. Lets get an update on whats on with that with david and karen. Good morning. Most of those seem to be falling apart. Lets give you a look on Storm Tracker 6 life double scan. Light snow showers really breaking up and showing up in dark shades of gray south of philadelphia and an around salem county. More have opened up in southern burlington and atlantic county. 28 degrees in philadelphia. Still 17 in allentown. 27 in wilmington. So you scan these numbers and obviously its a cold start. We do not have much wind however. Ill point out that what wind we have is coming up from the south and thats always a good direction for us in the wintertime as when you get winds from the south it means warmer air is on the way in. And that is what we are dealing with a little bit later today. Now its still going to be cold on the way to the school bus this morning. Temperatures in the low to mid 20s across most of the region and the teens up north. Not much wind but you want to bundle up. On the way home you can take some of that extra gear and stuff it in the book bag kids. 24 degrees by 8 oclock but 40 my noon. By 3 oclock 46 and that is your high. Its a quick mild spell however, because tomorrow it starts to get colder and theres another round of snow showers in the morning. Karen, ill have more on all of that coming up. With those snow showers breaking apart were not seeing a problem on the roads. Looking live in Delaware County were dry on i95 at the Commodore Barry bridge. Thats northbound traffic headed towards the blue route with no problems out there. Nonetheless we do have icy conditions being reported here in bucks county in soles bury township here so watch for it on 263 approaching aqua tong road and also 202 at aqua tong road so watch for icy conditions with temperatures below freezing. Another reason for ice and thats this water main break and chopper 6 headed to the scene in lansdale. Eighth street and maple avenue use caution in this area. You might want to stick to seventh and kenilworth avenue to avoid slippery conditions with that water. Lots of issues in norristown. This is because of that Apartment Fire weve been talking about. A number of closures. Swede street is closed near airy. Airy street is closed near swede, marshall street is closed near markley so stick to Markley Dekalb and main streets as your alternate to deal with this. This is also affecting some of septas bus routes. Theyre running but with detours. Thats bus route 90, 96, 98 and 131. All running with detours tam. Okay, karen, lets stay with that. Breaking news this morning crews are out there on the scene of that multi alarm blaze in norristown and it has been a bear. One person is dead, three people are hurt including a firefighter and nearly two dozen more people have been forced out of their homes because of this fire. Lets head on over to action News ReporterAnnie Mccormick. Shes live near the scene. Shes been gathering details all morning. Good morning annie. Reporter good morning, tam and thats right, the norristown fire chief confirming to us within the hour that one person is confirmed dead. That person a resident of the norris apartments behind me where the fire did break out. Three people injured including a firefighter. Were told that that injury happened while the firefighter was making a rescue. We are told though he is expected to be okay, it was an injury on his hand. Well, you can see the response out here right now. There are multiple companies that have assisted northbound fire company. Now, take a look at this video. This video is showing you how intense those flames were. At this point, this is all preliminary but fire officials do believe that this fire began in the basement. They think that it may have actually started in a trash chute and then went down into the basement and actually this fire was so intense that even though the Sprinkler Systems were enacted and the fire alarms were working that those flames were still able to go up six stories through these apartments. They tell us that multiple rescues were made by both firefighters and also police. This morning we were talking to the fire chief and also the ceo of the red cross who are assisting more than 20 people who are out of their homes this morning. Initially when fire and police crews arrived we found multiple residents trapped within the building. We had heavy fire conditions on all floor levels from the basement all the way up to floor five. The fire did burn out of control for some time. We do have the fire under control at this time. At this point were trying evaluate. Ill be able to tell you more as the day goes on but right now its just so new its impossible for us to say. The building appears to be severely damaged so this might be a lengthy response. Reporter and back out here live judge hughes telling us that Norristown High School is where a number of those people who are out of their homes are being taken care of this morning in a shelter. Now, theres heavy damage to this building, the fire chief telling us that there was a partial collapse in the back. That means many of those people who are in that shelter this morning have a long road ahead. The red cross will help them figure out what the next steps are to help them figure out a longterm plan. Now, you also heard the fire chief say that this fire is under control but it is not yet out at this point. Firefighters are still working on some of the flames, some of the hot spots that are still happening right now in that building. Of course well bring much more to you in the next half how. For now live in norristown, Annie Mccormack channel6 action news. Thanks annie. Breaking this morning at least 15 people are dead from the crash of a trans asia flight in taiwan. Right now rescuers are still out there working to pull survivors out of that plane wreckage. Authorities say the plane crashed shortly after takeoff. You can see it from the road hitting that bridge before it plunged into the river. 53 passengers and five crew members were on board when it took off this morning on its way to a nearby island. Dozens of people still missing and theres no word yet on what may have caused that crash. Were going to have much more on this coming up in a live report in our next half hour. Yet another story that is breaking. A Trenton Police officer was struck by a car this morning. It happened during a police chase. A civilian involved suffered a gun shot wound. Erin ohearn joins us live from the Satellite Center with the details coming in. Erin. Matt, we do have some good news to report. I did speak with Trenton Police a short time ago and they said the officer who was struck by a car during this incident is at Saint Marys Hospital and is expected to be okay. Now, this incident started around 1 30 this morning at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and walnut avenue in trenton. Thats where Trenton Police were involved in a chase that ended up on the 1700 block of east state street in hamilton township. Thats where the officer was hit and where the driver of the car involved in that chase was found with a gun shot wound. That person as well as the officer was transported to saint saint marys. Both are expected to be okay. Detectives are still on the scene trying to sort through the details. We do not know if there was another person in the car or if the officer struck by the car was involved in the initial chase. So obviously theres still a lot of details to sort through. But again, that officer is expected to be okay and as we said detectives are on the scene and as we get more information from them, well certainly bring it to you this morning. For now were live in the Satellite Center, erin ohearn, channel6 action news. Now back to you. Thank you erin. New this morning a transformer caught fire in the citys overbrook section overnight. Storm tracker 6 double scan is getting snow showers out of here too. Were looking at a little bit of action down in south jersey but most of this is very light and in some cases all youre seeing is flurries. If you see anything covering the road even a little you slow down. Again this looks to be mostly light nuisance stuff. If we go out wider and zoom into the north up around allentown you might see a flurry. The active snow showers not much and theyll be gone probable in 15, 20 minutes. As we look outside we have clouds with some clear breaks here and there. I expect to see fair amount of sunshine as we roll through the day mixing with some clouds. At times well have what you would consider a partly sunny sky cover. 27 in wilmington, 17 in allentown. 31 in millville. Mid 30s down the shore. Winds not all that bad and even though we have some clouds out there, its not that far to the west where you start to see them thinning out and i do expect a changeover to that clouds and sun mix today. Its also going to get milder because weve got winds coming up from the south drawing in milder air. Up in allentown youll still be on the cold side with a high of 37 but yesterday you were much colder so its going to feel better. Down the shore even better, 46 degrees clouds and sun not nearly as cold as yesterday. Winds about the same as yesterday, not too terrible and 46 is your high in philadelphia later today, a mix of clouds and sun not as cold. Winds southwest, out of the mild southwest at eight to 16 miles per hour. As we roll through the day well still be on the cold side at 8 oclock and still chilly by 11 oclock with that temperature in the mid 30s but by 2 oclock 44 and your high of 46 right around 3 oclock. By 5 oclock well probably still be holding onto the low 40s. Not bad. Its a oneday warmup because even though we get to 46 with the southerly flow today tomorrow theres going to be a cold front sweeping through and behind it we have an area of High Pressure thats going to be able to grab onto this colder air up in winnipeg and canada and the Northern Plains and bring it down and that means well be in the 30s tomorrow and the 20s on friday. So, the colder stuff does come back. As we transition to this colder air tomorrow morning theres the chance that we see some snow showers too. The future tracker model right now is sort of meting these before they get to philadelphia but most of our models are suggesting about a coating to an inch and again that would be during the morning commute tomorrow and then its gone. Your exclusive accuweather 7day getting a break today. 46 is your high. Tomorrow colder again with a high of 34 and temperatures beginning to plunge in the afternoon. Any snow showers again should be fairly early in the morning, coating to an inch possible there. And then friday brisk and cold a high of 29 degrees. On saturday, better again 42. Although late in the day or at night there could be a rain shower, perhaps changing to a snow shower as temperatures drop at night. And sunday still looks like kind of a mess. I think its mainly rain down south. Possibly some snow up north and philadelphia. Its were you ever those deals we might transition from snow to rain to snow as we go from the day into the evening. Sunny kind of messy. Monday we may have lingering snow showers. Thank you david. Its 6 12. All knee here at 6 00 a. M. Gunfire erupted in berks county hitting two men leaving one of them dead and now the family wants answers and justice. Also issues out there weve got another water main break and this happens a lot this time of year and its especially concerning when you have temperatures below freezing so if youre traveling near this area its a problem. This is upper southampton bucks county. Heres a new one and its four cap way at waverly road. Stick we have this Apartment Fire causing a number of closures. Swede street closed near airy, airy street closed near swede marshall street is closed near markley. You can use Markley Dekalb street main street as your alternates. Its also affecting several septa bus routes. Bus routes 90, 96, 98, 131 all being detoured through that area because of these closures here right now and you can get all the latest traffic using twitter and the 6abc traffic. We have been updated there around the blocky clock. I want to show you Storm Tracker 6 live double scan. Weve been watching snow showers that fell apart as they moved through. But theres one area where youre seeing a little bit of light dusting along route 40 near mays landing 322 near glassboro. So if youre going to rowan for an early class you want to watch it might be a little slippery. Hammonton route 30, white horse pike, berlin circle, route 72, garden state parkway is one of the areas where you have a little bit of that light snow matt. Thanks karen. He was injured while trying to rescue somebody from this Apartment Fire. Now, chopper 6 hd is overhead right now taking a live look at that blaze. An hour ago norristown fire chief tom odonnell told me that the fire is under control but still not out. Just at last check within the past 10 minutes were told that the fire is still not out at this point and you can see the amount of ladder and engine trucks that are assisting Norristown Fire Department from neighboring agencies trying to help with this blaze. Take a look at this video. This is video of those ink tense flame. At this point this is preliminary but fire officials do believe that something went down the trash chute and then into the basement and the basement is where this fire did originate. Now, those flames were so intense that they actually spread all the way up to the sixth floor even though there is a Sprinkler System in here that is working. We are also told that the fire alarms were working as well. Now, more than 20 people are displaced because of this fire. They are getting assistance from the red cross. Were told that there were multiple rescues. Not only from firefighters but also from police. Were also told that this all happened just before 1 oclock in the morning and within two hours, this fire went to four alarms. Today we caught up with a resident who lives on swede street. Shes not in the building where the fire happened but shes still affected from this. She told us what she woke up to. Firemen banging on the door. Opened to it see what was going on and saw fire trucks everywhere. They just said, you know, get out now. There was smoke. We were getting multiple reports of people trapped on all floor levels. There were rescues done inside building by firefighters, outside via main aerial devices. Crews had their hands full when they first got here. Reporter and back out here live you can still see the number of Fire Companies that are out here helping. You can see right now still at least four ladder trucks are around this apartment. The norris apartments. Were told that theres about 30 apartments within that six story building. On the bottom floor there is a chiropractor business. We did speak to the owner of that business who was obviously very distraught as well. Now, this mornings conditions its cold outside. We also saw that a number of firefighters putting salt down to try to get rid of the ice from the water and the hoses here. Theres definitely icy patches but one of them telling me if that fire happened yesterday when it was significantly colder it would have been a much worse situation. The ceo of the red cross telling us this morning that there are a number of people that are out of their homes more than 20 that theyre assisting that are at a shelter at Norristown High School. A number of those people also were told have physical disabilities so theyre having to bring in more people to try to help them feel as comfortable as possible. And since there is significant damage to this building, were told in the rear there is a partial collapse as well, many of these people may not be able to get back into their homes for some amount of time. Police say the driver hit the officer, then led police on a chase that ended here on east state street in nearby hamilton township. Were told the driver of the striking car had been shot but its still not clear who fired that shot. Both the driver and the officer were taken to nearby hospitals. Theres no word yet on their conditions. 6 36. We have another breaking story. Dramatic video shows the terrifying and tragic moments when a passenger plane crashes in taiwan. The plane hit a bridge and then crashed into the river. That death toll now has reached at least 19. Action News Reporter erin ohearn is live at the big board with more of these breaking details. Erin. Reporter matt, this dash cam video that captured the exact moment the plane started hurdling out of control will leave you speechless. You can see the plane to the left of your screen, it was carrying 58 people. Now watch. It bends to the left and you can see the wing actually clips that taxi traveling over the bridge and moments later the plane crashes into the river. Now, the plane crashed about five minutes after takeoff around 11 00 a. M. Local time. Weve just learned that as you said at least 19 people have been confirmed dead. Rescuers arrived on the scene immediately. You can see they used small rescue boats to reach the plane which was submerged in the water and its really amazing anyone survived. But Emergency Personnel are working quickly to pull survivors from the wreckage. Many of the passengers on board were chinese tourists. We also know there were two children on board. And we also have some shocking video of the today. You can see the damage to the bridge and pieces of that taxi which was clipped by the wing of the plane. Again, the people in that vehicle were injured and taken to a local hospital. Authorities say they do have military on hand to assist in the rescue efforts going on as we speak. Now, this is the second trans asia flight to crash in seven months. We know the black box has been recovered so as this investigation proceeds that will hopefully offer some clues as to why this aircraft crashed and this tragic situation took place. Of course well keep you update the on this story on 6abc. Com. Guys, back to you. All right, thank you, erin. Lets turn now to dave murphy to talk about whats going on around here with accuweather in the afternoon. Sounds pretty good. Afternoon definitely better. Storm tracker 6 live double scan right now shows that you most of our snow showers that we have been watching the last couple hours are now moving through and getting away from the shore. The last of them just from about Atlantic City up through Seaside Heights and most of what you see here is fairly light snow. If it does manage to cover a little bit you slow down particularly on the garden state parkway and route nine right now. As we take a look outside we have clouds mixing with some breaks over the airport and as we go a little later into the morning, we should wind up with sun mixing with clouds fairly well. 28 degrees is your current temperature in philadelphia. Winds light out of the south at five. That is a southerly wind and that means we are drawing air from down here where its milder this afternoon. There go the snow showers almost gone. There are some breaks in the clouds out to the west and we are going to see some sunshine today. As we roll through the day it remains fairly cold. By 8 oclock we might even dip a little bit from where we are now, but by 11 oclock 36 degrees and by 2 oclock 44 and your high today is 46 around 3 oclock this afternoon, probably Still Holding onto the low 40s by 5 oclock. Its been about 10 days since weve been that mild around the region so enjoy it this afternoon. Wont last long but it is going to be nice today. 46 in philadelphia and wilmington. A little cooler up in allentown. Close to 40 there in reading and lancaster and the mid 40s down the shore. Nos as cold as yesterday and a little breezy. Its going to be a one day warmup though because sitting to our west today is a cold front and you can see how the wind behind that front is coming down out of the cold northwest and in fact theres going to be an area of High Pressure thats going to move east over the next couple days and be able to sort of claw onto that colder air by winnipeg and draw it down into the northeast. Look for 30s tomorrow for highs and friday probably staying in the 20s. Colder air is coming back pretty quick. Tomorrow morning with that front coming through theres a slight chance of a snow shower. The latest run on future tracker 6 really wants to give us just a cloudy morning and not all that much snow. But as you look at all of the models some of them are going for a third to a half of an inch so we could see a coating during the morning commute tomorrow or maybe even up to a half inch to an inch in some spots. Todays high 46 degrees, getting a break this afternoon. Tomorrow colder again with a high of 34 and temperatures plunging in the afternoon. Again, if we see some snow it will be light and it will be early in the morning. Brisk and cold on friday, 29 degrees. Theres that high in the 20s i spoke of. On saturday not as harsh getting back to 42. Later in the day or at night there will be some rain perhaps transitioning to snow as temperatures drop. Sunday looks like a messy day with snow up north rain down south and philadelphia probably going back and forth between the two. And maybe some sleet mixed in, too. It could be some addition in snow on monday. Thanks, david. 6 41 now. Still to come on action news a crowded commuter train crashes into an suv in suburban new york killing seven people.
