Breaking right now verizon workers are preparing for that biggest strike in nearly five years. Union members are set to walk off the job in less than an hour. They have been working without a contract since last summer. Action News ReporterAnnie Mccormick is live in chinatown where the picketers will be gathering. Annie. Reporter matt, thats right, nearly 40,000 employees at two dozen separate locations around the east coast including here in philadelphia are set to strike around 6 oclock this morning. They had been working without a contract since august. To give you an idea of what it could look like, take a look at this video. This is video from a strike in 2011 that lasted about two weeks. Many are hoping to avoid that but were getting close to the wire. The workers are at odds with verizon. Many of them are members of two unions of Communications Workers of america and the International Brotherhood of electrical workers. They represent installers Customer Service and repairmen. Verizon wireless is not affected by the potential strike. Well, the issues at hand wages, job security and healthcare also pensions. The head of cwa here says retired employees could be in jeopardy. Many fear the company will make layoffs easier and instead they will rely more on contract workers. Now, verizon says that they spend 10 months working to come to an agreement. They do not take strike threats lightly. Back out here live verizon says that they have proposed a 6. 5 percent wage increase, affordable healthcare and competitive Retirement Benefits with a 401k company match. A pair of bronze doors worth 25,000 are missing from a mausoleum at a philadelphia cemetery. Police believe the doors were stolen from laurel hill early yesterday morning. And it was quite a feat. Those crews have cleared. But on the northeast extension northbound approaching Lehigh Valley still have a work zone there taking out the right lane. They should be gone before too long. During the midday today youll have work along 422 and this is each day it started yesterday now each day for the next couple weeks theyre working westbound between sanatoga and 724 and only one lane will be available starting at 8 oclock this morning. Home surveillance shows the two dogs approaching the contractor and as they close in the worker takes a swing with the wrench. It says the worker didnt have to make contact with the homeowner after the incident. It is also evaluating its policies and has offered to pay the vet bills. A grandmother has quite a story to tell.
