A sixyearold boy is still in the hospital after being shot multiple times in germantown and police are trying to track down the people who they say not only shot him but also riddled the entire city block with bullets. Philadelphia police and the Mayors Office are offering up to a 10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in conviction in both of the shootings this week that injured sixyearolds. Meanwhile both of those children are recovering from critical injuries. Mahaj browns grandmother spoke with action news while the boy was in surgery. He suffered broken bones and critical internal injuries after being shot multiple times. You never think its going to lap to you. But it lapse to all of us. Reporter the boys family says his godfather was driving him home from his grandmothers house. Police say around 11 30 they got caught in the crossfire when people in two vehicles started shooting in the area of east ashmead and clarkson streets. The boys godfather pulled over but police say a shooter in a vehicle fired shots into his car hitting him and the boy. Two other men on ashmead were shot by someone in another vehicle. We believe its two rivalling groups from two different districts and like a lot of this stupidity thats been going on for years and years and years much of which may be being fueled by social media. Reporter at least 50 bullet casings were found at the scene from multiple weapons including from an assault rifle. Homes and vehicles were struck. One bullet went through Julian Williams front wall. Handgun because its about a golf size hole here. Reporter this comes after a sixyearold girl was shot in West Oak Lane earlier this week. Parents on the block are nervous. I started crying. Like cause its just sad. Kids walking outside getting shot and stuff. They cant play in they own environment and stuff like that, its just its horrible. Reporter now, police are still looking for two vehicles involved in last nights shooting. One of them is a newer model mercury mountaineer, two tone in color, dark over light. There was a truly Stunning Development today in the trial of Pennsylvania Attorney general Kathleen Kane. Her defense rested without calling a single witness. Kane is accused of leaking confidential grand jury information and then lying about it. This morning when the prosecution wrapped up its case the defense asked the judge to dismiss the charges. They said the prosecution had failed to prove anything. When a judge declined kanes lawyers rested without mounting any defense. John rawlins was in Court Following this all day today. Hell have a live report coming up at 4 30. Meanwhile convicted sex offender Jerry Sandusky testified in court for the first time today as he makes his case to get a new trial. The former penn state assistant football coach denied he has ever molested any children. He says he deserves a new trial because his original lawyers didnt provide him adequate defense. You can see it on Storm Tracker6 live double scan radar we have some activity for areas north of philadelphia and also to the north and west so i do want to focus in on a cluster thats moving out of Lancaster County pressing into Chester County as we speak. Were tracking this storm. You could see all of the lightning associated with it and remember when you hear the roar, head indoors because lightning can strike even if youre about 10 miles away from the storm so about 4 24 its in morgantown, 426 pressing eastward into honey brook and also by 4 34 its moving into pine swamp. Now, weve got another cluster of activity moving across areas in burlington county. For the most part were finding popup showers and storms but these two were focusing in on are a little bit more intense. About 4 20 its at Mcguire Air Force base. 4 32 pressing into new egypt. We have about 60 lightning strikes associated with this as it presses to the south and east of the new jersey turnpike. Something to keep in mind as we go throughout the early evening hours. Police say they found 24yearold malik wilson shot in the chest yesterday on south 22nd street he died there at the scene. Police say they think he was killed after an argument with someone but they have not said just yet who did it. Firefighters battled the flames and the scorching heat today in delaware. A house on west sixth street in wilmington caught fire just before 8 30 this morning. Everyone was able to get out safely but one woman went to the hospital after breathing in too much smoke. Closing arguments in the case against Pennsylvania Attorney general Kathleen Kane are set to take place monday. In a surprise move, her defense team rested today without calling a single witness. Action News Reporter john rawlins has been in the court all week and was there again today and has more on what happened. Reporter after calling his last couple of witnesses this morning the prosecution rested as expected. The defendant Kathleen Kane then told the judge she had listened to the case against her and she didnt feel she needed to testify. Earlier one of her lawyers had asserted no reasonable jury would convict her. Showing no obvious signs of concern, a smiling Kathleen Kane departed court today. Earlier she told nine judge she would not testify. Her lawyers said the defense would rest without calling any witnesses indicating that the case against the attorney general is unproved. Very well satisfied with the trial and now were getting to the next stage. I dont want to comment on this because its sensitive points. Reporter kane is faced with testimony of former top advisers including her hand picked political consultant josh morrow. He claims kane was deeply involved in the process of leaking secret grand jury material that resulted in this 2014 daily news article and a subsequent coverup. So why didnt the attorney general opt to explain herselfly we put that to Trial Attorney and former prosecutor joseph mcgettigan. If she testified she was going to open herself up to what would have been a very difficult crossexamination and which she would have had to directly call persons liars, say that they were perjuring themselves here in this courtroom and among those were people that she hired and some who she has known for 20 years. Kevin steele and ada michelle henrys contention revenge was the motive in this case that kane was in a feud with the former state prosecutor frank fina and believed the leaked information in a newspaper article would damage him. Kathleen kane faces a number of charges, the most serious two counts of perjury. Monday will be closing arguments by the attorneys. Then it will be time for the jury to begin its deliberations. In norristown, john rawlins channel6 action news. Well, one of the most recognized names in philadelphias organized crime was set to be released from custody today. A judge granted Joseph Merlino 5 million bail. But he has to wear an ankle bracelet and also must stay at his nome boca rat tone when not working at his restaurant. Merlino is accused of taking part in a Healthcare Fraud scheme. He could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The former Athletic Director for the Coatesville School district is going to jail for stealing district funds. A judge ordered james denoto to spend five years behind bars. He pled guilty to stealing at least 15,000 from the district. At the time of his arrest in 2014donoto had already resigned for allegedly sending racist and sexist Text Messages about students and staff. Action news has learned that brakes caught fire causing a truck to ignite this morning along 322 in delaware county. Chopper6 was overhead as First Responders work to clean up the mess left behind. The truck was just west of route 452 in upper chichester when it caught fire about 8 oclock this morning. The trail are was filled with cardboard which was then scattered all over the roadway. We are told the driver here was not injured. A local Manufacturing Company hosted philadelphia mayor jim kenney for a tour today. Kenny visited the plant in north philadelphia. The growing company is owned by veterans and focuses on employing veterans and citizens returning to the united states. It provides medical Waste Systems to hospitals around the world and recently completed a 1. 5 million expansion project. Well, dozens of u. S. S. New jersey veterans returned to their old ship today. They were invited back to the battleship new jersey for the grand opening of a new exhibit dedicated to u. S. Navy chiefs. Vets from world war ii to the persian gulf war attended todays ceremony. Children who had a scare at summer camp have been rewarded for their bravery n newport Delaware Police provided cups pencilings and other kids who were stung by wasps earlier this week. Many officers helped take care of the campers during that incident at rock wood park on wednesday. About a dozen kids were stung, about three of them were taken to the hospital but none of them thankfully was seriously hurt. Great way to end their week. Big piece of equipment right here in our area is headed to Central America and its all to help First Responders do their jobs. Airmen at joint base Mcguire Dix Lakehurst loaded up this fire truck today. It was placed onton a c5 you military plane and that plane is heading to nicaragua and will be donating to a group of volunteer firefighters who are in need of equipment and help down there. The fire engine was donated by the princeton fire and police departments. The big gift through a program, this is being made possible through this program that allows u. S. Citizens and organizations to use Space Available on military aircraft to transport humanitarian goods to countries in need. Not much relief coming. In fact its going to feel hotter when you factor in the heat and the humidity. So, we joke about it but it is dangerous for some because its a prolonged stretch that were dealing with and with there comes the threat of those showers and storms. We can see it on Storm Tracker6 live double scan radar. In philadelphia its pretty dry but if you move off to the north and west were tracking some activity so on street level with Storm Tracker six about 66 lightning strikes associated with this cluster there in Lehigh County to the south of emmaus along route 100 in between macungie and bally at this hour. Theres another cluster just to the south of this activity pressing into areas in phoenixville to the north and east in limerick getting close to you. Also if you travel along route 202 north of malvern weve got the showers and storms, a a lot of lightning and remember if you hear the roar head indoors. Storms traveling to the east at about 15 miles an hour. Another cluster in Mercer County and trenton pressing into your region. Light to moderate pockets of rain. The problem youre getting a lot of rain in a short amount of time. Rainfall rates probably about 3inches an hour so its a good soaking that moves through. Then it moves out but the humidity unfortunately is sticking around right through our weekend so the heat index currently in philadelphia coming in at 108 feeling like 107 in wilmington current heat index in cape may some relief not as bad as inland locates at 99 and 94 up the coast in beach haven. This is dipping down to the south and thats why we are finding those showers and storms firing up across much of the northeast down into the midatlantic region as well. We drop down to 74 in the suburbs and 80 degrees in philadelphia for the overnight low. We talked about today with that excessive heat continuing as we led into our weekend with the excessive heat warnings posted both tomorrow and sunday. Weekend danger the high tomorrow 98 but dress for a heat index of 110. 97 on sunday with a heat index also in the triple digits coming in at 107. Something to keep in mind however as we go throughout the rest of the weekend. This weekend heat tips and something to keep in mind check on the seniors and the pets. Stay hydrated with lots of water. Seek out breaks in the shade. Avoid that afternoon sun and if you dont have that air conditioning use a fan or open up the windows to get some air circulation going on. Down the shore this weekend well thats the place to be if you want some relief from the humidity. Tomorrow hot and sticky, a high of 90. Hot and an isolated shower or thunderstorm on sunday, a High Temperature of 92. There is a moderate risk for rip currents both days so once again a good idea to swim where those lifeguards are on duty. The ocean temperature in the 70s. The upper 80s on the way thursday and friday with very little relief.
