Police say around 11 30 they got caught in the crossfire when people in two vehicles started shooting in the area of east ashmead and clarkson streets. The boys godfather pulled over but police say a shooter in a vehicle fired shots into his car hitting him and the boy. Two other men on ashmead were shot by someone in another vehicle. We believe its two rivalling groups from two different districts and like a lot of this stupidity thats been going on for years and years and years much of which may be being fueled by social media. Now, weve got another cluster of activity moving across areas in burlington county. Closing arguments in the case against Pennsylvania Attorney general Kathleen Kane are set to take place monday. In a surprise move, her defense team rested today without calling a single witness. Action News Reporter john rawlins has been in the court all week and was there again today and has more on what happened. Reporter after calling his last couple of witnesses this morning the prosecution rested as expected. The defendant Kathleen Kane then told the judge she had listened to the case against her and she didnt feel she needed to testify. Earlier one of her lawyers had asserted no reasonable jury would convict her. Showing no obvious signs of concern, a smiling Kathleen Kane departed court today. Earlier she told nine judge she would not testify. Her lawyers said the defense would rest without calling any witnesses indicating that the case against the attorney general is unproved. Very well satisfied with the trial and now were getting to the next stage. I dont want to comment on this because its sensitive points. Reporter kane is faced with testimony of former top advisers including her hand picked political consultant josh morrow. He claims kane was deeply involved in the process of leaking secret grand jury material that resulted in this 2014 daily news article and a subsequent coverup. So why didnt the attorney general opt to explain herselfly we put that to Trial Attorney and former prosecutor joseph mcgettigan. If she testified she was going to open herself up to what would have been a very difficult crossexamination and which she would have had to directly call persons liars, say that they were perjuring themselves here in this courtroom and among those were people that she hired and some who she has known for 20 years. Kevin steele and ada michelle henrys contention revenge was the motive in this case that kane was in a feud with the former state prosecutor frank fina and believed the leaked information in a newspaper article would damage him. A judge granted Joseph Merlino 5 million bail. But he has to wear an ankle bracelet and also must stay at his nome boca rat tone when not working at his restaurant. Merlino is accused of taking part in a Healthcare Fraud scheme. He could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The former Athletic Director for the Coatesville School district is going to jail for stealing district funds. A judge ordered james denoto to spend five years behind bars. He pled guilty to stealing at least 15,000 from the district. At the time of his arrest in 2014donoto had already resigned for allegedly sending racist and sexist Text Messages about students and staff. Action news has learned that brakes caught fire causing a truck to ignite this morning along 322 in delaware county. Chopper6 was overhead as First Responders work to clean up the mess left behind. The truck was just west of route 452 in upper chichester when it caught fire about 8 oclock this morning. The trail are was filled with cardboard which was then scattered all over the roadway. Children who had a scare at summer camp have been rewarded for their bravery n newport Delaware Police provided cups pencilings and other kids who were stung by wasps earlier this week. Many officers helped take care of the campers during that incident at rock wood park on wednesday. About a dozen kids were stung, about three of them were taken to the hospital but none of them thankfully was seriously hurt. Great way to end their week. Not much relief coming. In fact its going to feel hotter when you factor in the heat and the humidity. So, we joke about it but it is dangerous for some because its a prolonged stretch that were dealing with and with there comes the threat of those showers and storms. We can see it on Storm Tracker6 live double scan radar. In philadelphia its pretty dry but if you move off to the north and west were tracking some activity so on street level with Storm Tracker six about 66 lightning strikes associated with this cluster there in Lehigh County to the south of emmaus along route 100 in between macungie and bally at this hour. Theres another cluster just to the south of this activity pressing into areas in phoenixville to the north and east in limerick getting close to you. Also if you travel along route 202 north of malvern weve got the showers and storms, a a lot of lightning and remember if you hear the roar head indoors. Storms traveling to the east at about 15 miles an hour. Another cluster in Mercer County and trenton pressing into your region. Light to moderate pockets of rain. The problem youre getting a lot of rain in a short amount of time. Rainfall rates probably about 3inches an hour so its a good soaking that moves through. Then it moves out but the humidity unfortunately is sticking around right through our weekend so the heat index currently in philadelphia coming in at 108 feeling like 107 in wilmington current heat index in cape may some relief not as bad as inland locates at 99 and 94 up the coast in beach haven. This is dipping down to the south and thats why we are finding those showers and storms firing up across much of the northeast down into the midatlantic region as well. We drop down to 74 in the suburbs and 80 degrees in philadelphia for the overnight low. We talked about today with that excessive heat continuing as we led into our weekend with the excessive heat warnings posted both tomorrow and sunday. Weekend danger the high tomorrow 98 but dress for a heat index of 110. 97 on sunday with a heat index also in the triple digits coming in at 107. Something to keep in mind however as we go throughout the rest of the weekend. This weekend heat tips and something to keep in mind check on the seniors and the pets. Stay hydrated with lots of water. Seek out breaks in the shade. Avoid that afternoon sun and if you dont have that air conditioning use a fan or open up the windows to get some air circulation going on. Down the shore this weekend well thats the place to be if you want some relief from the humidity. Tomorrow hot and sticky, a high of 90. Hot and an isolated shower or thunderstorm on sunday, a High Temperature of 92. There is a moderate risk for rip currents both days so once again a good idea to swim where those lifeguards are on duty. The ocean temperature in the 70s. Scorching sunshine on sunday, still the likelihood of a popup shower and at 97. Not as extreme on monday with a thunderstorm around and at 93. Hot and still humid on tuesday, thunderstorm overhead but were back in that number down to 91 for the air show in Atlantic City. The heat wave lingers, a high of 90. The upper 80s on the way thursday and friday with very little relief. The only thing we can say is that the humidity wont be as oppressive as we get into early next week as those numbers come on down a little bit, guys. Okay. Theres some good news. Its august. It is official. The Delaware Valley is in the middle of its fifth heat wave of the year and with it feeling like triple digit heat outside people try to cool off however they could today. Looking live outside right now the center city skyline and you see heavy cloud cover up above the sun trying to peek through a bit and we have no sign of this heat letting up any time soon. On top of that more storms could be on the way. It is friday night and the big story on action news is the excessive heat warning that remains in effect for our area. Three days of temperatures in the 90s officially makes this a heat wave. Were up to 96 degrees so far in philadelphia. The problem, though, were not even halfway through. Looks like this heat wave could last longer than initially thought. Could be more than a week. Good shot this could be an eight day heat wave and with the temperatures we have dewpoints in the 70s, oppressive humidity so the heat index, the way it feels philadelphia 107, allentown 101, wilmington 103, millville 107 and the Atlantic City airport it feels like 108 degrees and this
