Commuters are facing challenges after a structural problem forced septa to take onethird of their rail trains out of service. Some were so full they passed by stops in the thick of rush hour this morning. And now commuters are hoping for the best. John rawlins is live at septa headquarters where officials updated the situation this morning. A bit a rough ride this morning on a typical weekday its estimated that 65,000 people take a train to work or into the city of philadelphia. Today its estimated that 35 and 40,000 people were able to do that. As you said trains actually bypass some would be riders and it could be tougher in the near future as more would be riders return to work after the july 4th holiday. From norristown to fern rock to wynnewood no evidence of a melt down but there was packed trains. The first train passed us by and this one here was okay and it was standing room only. We saw delays, it started out not so bad but as the morning when on by 7 30 or so there were trains that had to skip stations because they were full to capacity. Septa says in six cases trains bypassed would be riders closer to the city, and promised to make adjustments but is expected more returning riders going forward. I am concerned that well have even more people coming back to this system tomorrow and i think people may still have been off today. So we continue to ask people to look at alternative septa service. Septa parking lots in south philadelphia had plenty of capacity. Hopefully rail riders will park and ride taking the subway but not many takers today. Many opted to stay with the rails a surprising number unaware of septas troubles. I just heard about it. Have to Contact People i work with to tell them i wont be there for a 9 00 meeting. How long will this last . That is an open question this evening. Septa is in talks with the train, that were pulled out of service here this, re exploring various fixes but no one with any certainty can say what caused the problem to begin with. John rawlins, channel 6 action news. A bit of a mess, action news viewers are tweeting pictures and videos to us about their septa commutes and we invite you to do the same. Using 6abcaction and keep up to date with septa at 6abc. Com, our coverage includes slideshows and videos and the latest information. Lets get a check of the evening commute with the trains out of service tonight. Lets go to matt pellman. Its a rough day, a mess, and we expect the mess to continue for this evenings rush. Lets return down again what is going on. Most lines are an an enhanced saturday schedule. A weekend requested with an extra train or two during the rush hour, that say weekend schedule that means a lot less service. Some have no extra service compared to saturdayed and the wynnewood line is not running at all. You are on the buses for the duration of this situation. We are encouraging to you think out of the box maybe amtraks keystone line or traveling to norristown, try the norristown high speed line, traveling to and from the delco burbs maybe the elwood line or newark line try the 101 or 12 trolleys and the market broad street lines have extra service and you can park at fern rock or the old navy hospital, there are options to beef up these other modes to compensate for the loss of so many rail trains. And people are driving we have trouble on the roads on the schuylkill westbound in the left lane jammed from city avenue westbound. And ramp at 295 is closed. And lets grab the ipad and do the commuter report on this back to work tuesday afternoon. In hamilton both directions of travel involved on the ent city expressway. Well talk about this and effect else in the next half hour. From our new jersey newsroom now, officials in camden continue to investigate a series of suspicious fire. Today is our first day with the short able of about a third of the septa Regional Rail cars and as a result we are operating on new schedules, they are enhanced weekend schedules, a couple of extra trains, what this meant throughout the day is delays on the septa rails and trains crowded and sometimes even by passing a station because there is no more room on the trains, what this means for a lot of you is it takes extra time. You need to allow the extra time and think out of the box and use other modes of transportation like the high speed line and 101, 102 trolleys out of delco and the market frankford subways, they have added service, increased service to help you out. Over the course of the next weeks and possibly months. Here on the schuylkill expressway we had a crash in the westbound lanes by the blue route, the travel time westbound is still abyssmal. Stormtracker 6 live double scan showing we have dry the out after some of that heavy rain overnight and that was all associated with a warm front and behind that front, where temperatures are climbing and the humidity is climbing as well. 87 degrees and seasonably warm and the same in wilmington. Cape may 83 and allentown 85 and reading 85 degrees, compare this to 24 hours ago, its 10 degrees warmer in philadelphia. And 13 degrees warmer at the Atlantic City airport and wildwood and wilmington and also more humid. So tonight will be a warm night, very humid with areas of patchy fog developing and overnight low of 66 and 73 degrees for sent city and bring on the heat, the next three days we are not alone in the heat and humidity, the jet stream is well up to the north and most of the country is sweltering and along the i95 corridor the heat is building especially on thursday and friday, that will be the peak of the heat that is when we see thunderstorms developing, the heat advisory goes into effect tomorrow. And the heat index will be in the upper 90s and then an excessive heat watch is posted for thursday and friday, and heat index close to 100 degrees this could take your body by surprise, find air conditioning if you can drink lots of fluids and check in on the elderly and keep an eye on your pets. Down the shore lots of sunshine. The jersey beaches 86 and delaware 87, the exclusive accuweather sevenday forecast, the three hs tomorrow, hazy, hot and humid, 94 degrees and the heat index more like 99 and the heat index close to 100 and a few popup thunderstorms and a better chance of widespread thunderstorms on friday as the cold front gets closer and evening thunderstorms perhaps overnight friday night 95 degrees and saturday still hot and humid and 92 degrees with the front nearby we could get a refiring of thunderstorms and finally on sunday, the heat wave will be broken, it will be breezy and less humid 86 degrees, and monday seasonable and 86 and temperatures start to climb upwards in the middle of next week. Partly sunny and a high of 88 degrees, a lot of it is common sense about drinking lots of water and air conditioning, but we have not felt this kind of heat and humidity since last summer.
