Jeff is thankful to be alive. Once it started it was kind of bizarre. It almost felt like we were flying. The cars flew off a left hand curve and at least 200 people were transported to hospitals and an additional body was found in the wreckage and the death toll rose to seven and they disabuse that project ecaisles were linked to the crash and that it was traveling as twice the posted limit. I cant confirm that and i done believe that the ntsb can confirm anything like that. They are still going through their process. That situation though still seems to have changed. The ntsb has confirmed about that high rate of speed and traveling at a higher rate of speed than posted for the curve. We expect to hear more from the Safety Agency here there say meeting tonight. John rawlins channel 6 action news. John thank you, we have been seeing the startling images the new video from the ntsb and the video we just saw and all of it which spells out the enormity of this disaster and that could be spelled out by response to it. And off to my right 100 feet down the street there is media from clear around the world gathered here at frankford in the citys Port Richmond section that only compliments the Law Enforcement response there are investigators from every level federal, state and local here coming through the wreckage, blocking the city streets and all the helicopters Many State Police helicopters and philadelphia helicopters in the air as well. You heard john mention the black box i want to tell you about that its at the amtrak operation sentner delaware investigators are trying to pull whatever they can from that device right now t. Works differently for trains than it does for airplanes on train theres is only one such black box and it should tell investigatest ers how fast the train was going. And the major part of this investigation will come from the engineer, the man who was driving this train when it derailed last night. And vernon odom is live now at east detectives where the engineer was speaking with detectives today an incredible story there. Reporter speaking at a very limited fashion, the engineer of amtrak 188 in the hot seat, why was he apparently going double the speed limit, he apparently gave Philadelphia Police no firm answers today. The trains engineer spent hours inside of the headquarters today and according to Police Commissioner ramsey declined to give a full statement even after his union lawyer arrived. The 22yearold engineer declined to shed light on anything that occurred. The engineer was injured and received medical care and was interviewed by the Philadelphia Police department and made whatever statement he may have made. With all the speculation of the speed of train when it hit that deadly curve one Police Report had this conclusion, its a safe assumption that the guy was going faster than the recommended limit. He man left through a rear door and key members of the investigate of team assembled to develop their game plan courtesy of commissioner ramsey. Tonight Police Commissioner ramsey says that the conductor of 188 received a fractured skull and is struggling to survive tonight. Vernon odom, channel 6 action news. All right thank you vernon of course while investigators are focused on exactly what happened and trying to pinpoint the cause of last nights derailment, many are focused understandably and necessarily on the victims of this terrible tragedy. Mayor Michael Nutter ordered all flags to fly at half staff in honor of those who died in this tragedy Governor Tom Wolf gave the orders statewide, we are learning more about the victims as well as the people that survived and trying to figure out just what to do next. Walter perez is live now at 12th and market. That is where a Family Resource center is set up. Brian once again it has been confirm that at least seven people are killed and more than 200 injured and a former congressman, though his injuries were quite minor and others are missing including a woman recently named ceo of eyre Company Based here in philadelphia. It was two months ago when Rachel Jacobs was named ceo the 39yearold mother of two was listed as a passenger on the amtrak train that derailed and is among those that are listed. The 48 father of two in new jersey was a Software Architect for the Associated Press and joseph zemder was on his way home to rockaway for spring break. He was a loving son and nephew and cousin and very community minded. We are shocked. Moon while in the midst of this tragedy are stories of survival including congressman Patrick Murphy on his way home after a business trip to washington murphy an iraq war veteran says he never experienced anything quite like that. The car veered to the left and then violently over to the right, i am 61 about 200 pounds and i was thrown like a rag doll like everyone else. We spoke to a passenger jeff cutler who lived in brooklyn and grew up on east oak lane. He took a tumble and received a cut but he is a grateful man. They wanted to xray us i am mobile and i can walk and slight limp but no break but i am lucky, lucky to be standing here. A Family Resource center is set up here at the marriott. Investigators are slow on purpose releasing information on the victim so as new information is released stay with action news and 6abc. Com for the latest. Walter perez channel 6 action news. All right thank you walter. We want to remind you once again that amtrak has set up a hot line, this is the number on your screen, if you are looking for a loved one that is the number to call 18005239101. City officials at amtrak asking anyone that was on the train but has not checked in with anyone to please call them. If you are familiar with how amtrak works many times people buy tickets for a train and get on a later train that is cause for confusion this afternoon. This will help them make sure everyone is accounted for. We got an updated from temple hospital this afternoon that is where many of the most seriously injured are being treated. Lets head there now ali gorman is there live at the hospital with an update. Reporter brian the chief of medicine came out to update reporters. He did identify the name of the gentlemen that passed away here, he also said that 23 patients remain here at Temple University hospital and eight patients remain in Critical Condition overnight 54 patients were take and to Temple University hospital, many were treated and released and most had broken bones like arms legs and wrists. They have activated emergency plans meaning extra nurses, doctors and support staff was on hand to help. I was very pleased things came together here last night very well and in just a few hours the trauma team and the doctors and nurses that are trained to do this responded wonderfully. I think we passed the test. Back here live dr. Curbshing says that many patients will stay overnight and have surgery and the patients in Critical Condition he expects them to do well. Ali gorman channel 6 action news. All right thank you. For those who were able to some how walk away from the incident last night, today was not about recovery, but about processing what happened. Obviously no small task, it was about trying to get where they were going last night it made for a rather hectic day at 30 and street station it was crazy to say the least. Eva pilgram is live now. You have the scene from there. The red cross was set up here at 30th street station for much of the day to help the victims of the Train Derailment, they helped out 75 of them, meanwhile, countless others are figuring out how to get to their destinations. 188 victims arrived here early this morning after being released from local hospitals, they came with bandages and bruises and still in shocked. I can feel the car tipping over and then the blackness of flipping in the dark. Buses were on hand to get the victims to new york this morning and for others traveling today. The Train Derailment is on their minds. Its horrible my heart goes out to the families. Jaime was traveling from florida and amtrak made the announcement at 6 00 this morning to passengers on the train. We got off in washington, anybody that was coming to philadelphia, we had to get on another train and everybody had to get their luggage off and people are in washington trying to figure out how to get back. Not just passengers in new york are affected by the changes today. We are still making our trip on time. New Jersey Transit has shuttle buss to help people get into the garden state if you are trying to get to new york, there say shuttle to cherry hill and then another shuttle to pennsauken and you can get on the river line to trenton, in trenton you take the northeast corridor to pen station in new york. You expect to get from point a to point b, and you expect to come home safely. Back here at 30th street station, you can see there is still traffic here and trains are running in and out and none to Atlantic City or to new york. We are live here at 30th street station eva pilgram channel 6 action news. All right thank you very much. I want to give you one more sense of perspective as we zoom this camera in on the amtrak engine about 200 or 300 yards from where we are standing that gives you a seasons to the tracks themselves, and if you hang a hard right there is another 200 yards to the derailment site itself. Obviously that caused a logistic problem last night to get people in in the midst of darkness and getting heavy equipment in certainly the kind needed to upright the train cars is an enormous task. Many equipment and even more people remain on the scene back there. We have much more coming up from our location here in Port Richmond and near the derailment scene coming up in the next half hour. Great to have you out there brian, its awesome to see that happening in the daytime. Meantime in washington the house of representatives rejected a bill today that would have improved amtraks infrastructure, the bill to increase the budget died in the republican led house appropriate Appropriates Committee it would reduce grants to amtrak by 50 from last year, cut improvement and leave money for safety and operations at last years levels. We know the Train Derailment is having an impact on traffic, matt pellman is in the Traffic Center. We are seeing a lot of detours a lot of them could be in place for a while. Of the course the biggy being Amtrak Service between here and new york city, all trains on the northeast corridor still halted but trains are operating between philadelphia and between here and harrisburg and d. C. And d. C. And boston. Njt is helping out running buses from cherry hill to trenton and can you take amtrak up to new york city, but the a. C. Amtrak line is not running and wont be for a while. Septa, the trenton Regional Rail line is halted and stay that way for a while and they added extra service on the trenton line, extra trains and cars on the regularly scheduled trains chestnut east is doing fine. Meanwhile on the roadway front there in Port Richmond a bunch of blockages frankford avenue is open between tarsdale and caster but i would avoid it stick with aramingo or richmond or 95 but extra volume on 95 today and the next few days as people detour and are forced to take to the roads rather than the trains and city avenue southbound construction is coming off the schuylkill is jamming us up and on the schuylkill eastbound by gulph mills there is a crash in the right lane giving us delays out of king of prussia. Thank you are you on top of that, we have more ahead nydia han is talking to train experts to get more insight on the investigation and Nora Muchanic is in trenton seeing an unusually busy day and sara bloomquist is talking to people that live near the derailment, about how the wreck is impacting their community. And we have complete coverage at 6abc. Com we are alerting you nonstop with the latest developments and find dozens of photos from the scene and viewer videos from the crash all on 6abc. Com. Today people gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the long standoff with Philadelphia Police and the Liberation Group move, it came to an explosive end. The police dropped a bomb on the fortified West Philadelphia compound on osage avenue in 1985 firefighters were unable to stop the flames from consuming 65 homes and three blocks essentially burned to the ground and today people gathered at the site, erica mimes holding up a sign remembering the victims. I remember this happening as a child and the bomb dropping on the house and watching the neighborhood just go up in flames. This is something that philadelphia has to remember and this is something that cannot go away and something that has to be dealt with. Its being marked with commemoration events with people all across the Country Holding similar gathering. Ten families are forced out of their homes by an Apartment Fire in Camden County we can see the flames burn through the roof of several units at the echelon glen apartments, a dog died in the fire and the red cross is helping people with a place to stay. Philadelphia firefighters spent their afternoon at a burning apartment in torresdale, this started at ashton road, the flames shot through the top of one unit before 4 00, investigators are working to determine how it started, there are no reports of any injuries. Its time now for accuweather, lets go over to meteorologist, adam joseph. A distinct change in the air low humidity and a little on the chilly side at times especially when the sunshine is not out we take a live look out here, sky 6 hd over the ben franklin bridge sunshine sharing the sky with the cloud cover today and a dry day and again a windy one as well. 71 now in philadelphia so far the high to the day but north and west mid up toer 60s, 69 in wilmington and Sea Isle City 67 degrees and at the shore equal to inland locations because of the wind out of the northwest so no sea breeze. You heard the winds pick up and they continue to range from speeds of 29 Miles Per Hour in reading and 22 in wildwood and the winds start to relax and ease overnight. Now from 6 00 red flag warnings continue to be in effect for all of new jersey it means that with the breeze and low humidity the ground that is very dry, unfortunately good fuel once again, if there was a fire to spark up it could easily spread this afternoon. You can see all the cumulous clouds bubbling up its the cold air draining in from the north and west and interacting with that strong warm may sunshine and as you look at the numbers 46 in trenton and near 50 in philadelphia and 45 in millville and going down to 40 in allentown and 40 in lancaster, clear sky and less wind and chilly. Temperatures are similar tomorrow afternoon to today with the winds again out of the northwest for the northwestern suburbs 69 in allentown and the wind will start to kick off the water, the sea breeze will develop tomorrow at the shore. With temperatures in the mid60s, pollen levels remain on the high side, and spiking again over the weekend and the culprits oak birch and maple. The four day at 4 00, tomorrow a decent day more in the way of sun than clouds and spring beauty of 73 degrees and then on friday sunshine and some high clouds and 76 and the muggy weather returns with the warmth over the weekend on saturday 85 degrees and there could be a stray downpour or thunderstorm in a couple of spots but far from a washout this weekend either day and warm 84 and muggy sunday and a chance of a scattered thunderstorm around well have the sevenday forecast, and ill let you know if there is more organized rain, we need a soaking. Action news continues with the latest on the devastating derailment in Port Richmond. Moments after amtrak train 188 passed through philadelphias 30 and street station, something catastrophic happened. I knew i could feel the car tipping over and it was just blackness of like slipping in the dark. When the slipping stopped and the car settled it became clear that not all the passengers would make it out alive. We have Team Coverage of the deadly amtrak crash beginning with my coanchor brian taff live at the scene. Good afternoon, once again shirleen. As you know all too well, when all of this began to unfold i was home a little bit under the weather, watching like so many others as a viewer and from that perspective too much to process, the twisted steel and the carnage and the people that died, too much to process. Coming down here today as a person and not simply as a reporter that emotion was heavily in the air among all the people that live here along frankford avenue and coming up to me to tell me their stories and the first stoppeders and politicians that made the trip up to frankford avenue and updated the press and media about the ongoing search and rescue, it remains a search and rescue at this point. Its simply incredible. I must say also, key among the questions here today is what happened, what caused all of this and of course speed is one of those central issues they are said to be investigating right now Wendy Saltzman has more on that today. She joins me live about 150 feet from where we are standing have you more on the speed here, was this train traveling too fast . The ntsb did just confirm to us that the train was traveling 100 Miles Per Hour twice the recommended speed limit around this curve and a second victim was found this afternoon found from the wreckage and they hope that will be the last fatality in what they say is a horrific scene. Seeing these cars, these huge metal vehicles, turned upside down one basically almost split in half, you know this is a devastating situation. Today the officials from the ntsb are combing through the mangled meatal of the amtrak derailment last night. Seven cars came completely off the tracks and some flipped over multiple times and the death toll could have been worse. Its incredible that so many people walked away from the scene, of the seven that died three were found under the wreckage and two people were thrown from the train and one died at the hospital and now an active area is being searched. We have to make sure we are searching every car every inch, to find or locate individuals that may have been on the train the train left the station six minutes before and the manifest of passengers was not complete and the amount of possible missing is not known. Well do everything in our power to work with the Mayors Office and the ntsb and all authorities. 238 passengers and five crew members, it was going 100 Miles Per Hour around the curve with a speed limit of 50 Miles Per Hour. What was the train speed what was the speed limit on the curve and that is part of our investigation. The black box has been recovered and that is being reviewed at the amtrak offices in delaware and there was a front facing camera on the front of this train and it will be part this have investigation. Channel 6 action news. All right wendy thanks. One thing that struck me when i was walking up and down the streets talking to residents is that people have come from all over the region to be here and people coming from other sections of philadelphia all to be a part of this and seeing what is happening so moved by the images Philadelphia Police have specifically asked that people not come here, and further crowd or complicate the scene. But they understand and Kenneth Moton stopped to interview two men live in Port Richmond theyized realized that the First Responders rushed to a store and then another store and then another store to buy all the water they could. Sara bloomquist is live in this neighborhood as well. Talking to people whose streets are closed off and lives are turned upside down, you have the latest after talking to them today. Im at jasper and pike just up the block from you you can see all the row homes and neighbors going about their business around me but in front of me are barricades and media trucks lining the street that is where you are at the command center at the end of this block u. S. Senators are coming and going today. And people are trying to get on with their lives after a mass casualty event in their very own neighborhood. On frankford avenue media is staged for updates from officials neighbors sit on front stoops watching people come and go. The neighborhood is congested. Amtrak and the police and trying to get everyone through and trying to get people out that are still there. Its crazy. People living on these Port Richmond street, heard the collision loud and clear. Thought it was a plane or something. You thought a plane had crash . I saw the cops coming and the ambulance, i put the tv on they were already saying it was a train accident. Timothy johnson was one of the many nearby residents who rushed to the scene to try and help the iraq war veteran was amazed by how well the First Responders dealt with the kay chaotic situation. They were calm, in this situation, i give my hand to the city. Everybody we interviewed we said said despite the upheaval of course their thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this Train Derailment and the families of those who lost their lives. Im sara bloomquist, channel 6 action news. And sara an overwhelming spirit of generosity, everybody here trying to help and lending us the media our front porches, we are standing now on someones front porch they have stories to tell and we are beginning to tell them. Meantime lets send things back to the studio and alicia. Speaking of the stories we are hearing firsthand accounts from those that lived to tell theirs. Hip hop producer armine ourworld who often works with the roots, talks about how he used his cell phone to help them get off the train safely. Crawl forward sir. Keep crawling come on man. It felt like our car was leaving the ground i started floating in the air and felt my body lifting up and Going Forward over seats and started toppling. And one their car stopped and their train toppled over, he told Robin Roberts how he used his cell phone to make a path to safety. I turned on the light and we could see better and help others, a lady was stuck behind a chair and we helped her out. Can you see his injuries bloody arm and sore neck. He says even though he was hurt he was happy to help the people near him get off and get help. I didnt think twice about it i was there and was an able body and just doing what i could to help people. He sure did, by the way today is yamines birthday the roots quest love posted a note on facebook thanking god he is here to literally see another year. We are grateful and he is grateful to have the birthday today. His instinct was to jump in and help. Some passengers that survived are not only dealing with the fresh memories they are also stranded. Nora muchanic is live in trenton with more on the delays and cancellations because of the accident. Reporter hi there roughly 750,000 people use the amtrak every day and the new Jersey Transit septa will run free shuttle buses to move customers but first more disruption at the trenton train station but compassion too. I just drove from cherry hill. Anthony was to take amtrak up to new york for depositions but he was delayed. He pushed back meetings and plans because service along the northeast corridor is interrupted by the derailment but he is not complaining. An absolute tragedy and everybody is trying to deal with it and there is inconvenience but it could have been a whole lot worse. It was a confusing day for travelers rushing to make up time, and we spoke to the head of the Alumni Relations in delaware. I think a 10 30 meeting in new york that i had to cancel, but now im trying to get to my luncheon. There is still no Amtrak Service from new york to philadelphia and septas Regional Rail line is also out of service but extra cars are added to trentons west septa line. They are cross honoring amtrak tickets that means can you travel on njts light buses and light rail using your amtrak tickets. Extra cars are add to the river line. I have to get on the river line and go to philly to get a bus. Complicated. Yes but what can do you things happen. While the rail line shut down is an inconvenience, many travellers are thinking about the victims rather than having their day disrupted. Its a tragedy and we were not involved so well pray pour the victims and hope to get where we need to go safely. For customers that use septas Regional Rail, free buses are operating to the septa station and cornwell heights to the frank ford Transportation Center. Over the next few days pack your lunch and your patience. Im Nora Muchanic channel 6 action news. Thank you nora. The Train Derailment continues to affect mass transit and matt pellman is in the Traffic Center with an update for us. The next few day require flexibility on the part of travelers we are putting a good group of people and being flex edge considering what families are going through, this is why it requires flexibility amtrak is running between here and new york city, all trains halted between here and d. C. And new york and boston. Trains are running on the northeast corridor but on a modified schedule and same with harrisburg and keystone line. The trains are running but the schedule residence off. Njt is helping out running between trenton and new york city they will honor your amtrak ticket and running extra trains on the river line and patco is cross honoring tickets, but the a. C. Rail line cannot run it shares those tracks where the Train Derailment happened. Trenton line not running and no time table within they expect it back in service and west trenton has more lines. You can go to the Transportation Center and use the line to get in and out. And west not a great option delays because of the Train Derailment and a number of street closures in Port Richmond and frankfurt avenue is open and congested with a lot of activity, id stick with aramingo, or richmond but that is busy too because people taking to the roads because they cant take to the rails. More next with incredible stories of survivors forced to scramble to safety plus, a local expert on the rail system says he doesnt believe that a sharp curve played a role and what makes this crash so unusual. Before we go to break we want to take another look at the astonishing images from the accident scene. Action news continues next. Good afternoon once between, im brian taff live in the Port Richmond center of philadelphia it continues to grapple with the rest of the city and the rest of america with this train tragedy, we are hearing the devastating stories of those that have died seven so far but there are also stories of those that survived. One survivor told action news that it was like a regular ride until the train made a wide turn and suddenly tipped over and she was lucky to escape car number three with only bumps and bruises. I could feel the car tipping over and then just the blackness of flipping in the dark and not sure where i would end up getting hit by seats not sure. Beth davis says she realizes she was okay when she could taste dirt underneath her she was treated for minor injuries and released. She was trying to get home after losing her wallet but she knows she is fortunate to have just lost her wallet and not her life seven others were not as fortunate. Incredible stories coming in. Newscasters believe that that train was hurtling through a 50 Miles Per Hour zone at who than 100 Miles Per Hour but speed may not be the only factor at play, nydia han is live at drexel with this part of the story. Reporter that is right the ntsb will continue to look at other factors anything and everything that could have contribute utd to this catastrophe vent. This professor is familiar with that stretch of rail and had insight. One car was completely cut in half, something made the trained roll over, this is beyond unusual. Dr. Joseph martin will do an autopsy of the train carefully analyzing each piece of metal they have the event recorder that confirms the trains speed and throttle position and brake operation. It crashed just near the site of the deadliest train cash in 1993 but doesnt believe the bend could be a factor. There were a million trains between events its not the inherent geeometry its a gentle curve. They expected that just hours before it derailed and found no de defect defect. Its new and was built for amtrak. The locomotive itself is new too, having delivered it to amtrak just last year. What does that leave . Something that caused the momentum and something that dropped on to the tracks that is what he dont know. Certainly that is what investigators are trying to figure out and despite this initial finding of speed martin says it could take months to conclude the investigation that could be one of the closely watched rail investigations we have ever seen.
