Turning out to be a challenge. The National Weather Service Posted Winter Weather advisories for the bulk of our viewing area except for along the coast beginning at 3 oclock tuesday afternoon. Were just recovering from the ice storm last night and weve got another one already developing. Storm tracker 6 live double scan showing the low pressure right now is west of denver. Its just beginning to tap into some moisture and this is the first in a series of two lows. This one will go up across the great lakes and this will eventually pull in warmer air but when the moisture first moves in tomorrow afternoon its going to be cold enough for snow changing over to sleet. Future tracker showing unfortunately timing with this system by 5 oclock that moisture is here in the form of that snow and sleet so the tuesday evening commute is going to be quite messy and even tonight we will look at the possibility of some refreeze. You want to be careful overnight tonight from whats left from last night but this is what to expect tomorrow afternoon with the first impulse in the storm system. That will be moving in between about 3 oclock and moving out and changing over to rain by 11 oclock. Were looking at light snow. Snow is not the big deal around philadelphia. A coating up to about 2inches across the northern and Lehigh Valleys. The problem is after the snow we get that changeover to ice up to about a 10. Of an inch of ice. That will cause a slow evening commute. Then its not over. Then on wednesday a transition to rain before colder air moves in thursday morning the potential for heavy snow. This could be significant. Ill talk more about that coming up in the full accuweather forecast. Jim. Thank you cecily. Lets switch live to allentown and Lehigh Valley correspondent walter perez. Walter whats penndot doing to get ready for this trifecta rain, snow and ice. Reporter thats right, jim, the big three moving our way for sure and its coming after such a sunny day across the region but with a little bit of fortune this will be winters last gasp. Spring officially begins in less than three weeks. But old man winter is apparently going down swinging. The next few days are expected to bring a little of everything that winter has to offer including ice. And so when we asked penndot spokesperson in allentown what theyre doing to prepare for the impending icy conditions his response was not much and for good reason. Because weve had so many storms theres enough residue salt residue on the road that would be similar to what pretreating would accomplish. Reporter once the frost bitten precipitation begins to fall penndot has more than 200 salt and plow trucks at the ready and despite this being a brutally cold winter it snowed quite a bit less than it did last year so theres no concern about running out of salt. Going into the weekend, we had enough material on hand to handle about six to 10 more storms. Reporter lets hope and pray that leftover salt soon goes back into storage. With that said, we asked folks here in the Lehigh Valley which one was worse last winter or this winter. Most people we spoke with said take your pick. The cold is not good and the ice is bad around here. We have a lot of hills and so its tough getting out of some houses. Im a teacher and last winter we missed almost every tuesday and thursday and this winter its been every monday and tuesday, so its been a rough either way you look at it. Reporter now for those keeping record penndot says so far this winter ranks fourth as far as most salt used with 120,467 tons of salt spread across a region this winter. Reporting live from allentown walter perez, channel6 action news. Jim. Thank you walter. We suggest you stay on top of the wintry weather with the 6abc Storm Tracker app. The Free Download gives you access to Storm Tracker 6 radar and the accuweather forecasts on the go. So, Storm Tracker 6 live. Look at this view right now showing that we have a nice quiet afternoon. We got to see the sunshine earlier today. Temperatures well above freezing. 38 degrees in philadelphia right now. We reached a high of 40 so a lot of melting going on. Allentown 34, trenton 36, millville 34 and wilmington 34 degrees. Temperatures tonight though will be dropping well below freezing so do be careful. Any slush or standing water on untreated surfaces will be refreezing. Satellite6 along with action radar showing that we are clear right now. Thats what brought us all this sunshine. High pressure building in. However, theres already another storm system waiting in the wings. This one is moving closer to denver. Its beginning to pull in some moisture. It will be strengthening and moving up towards the great lakes and this is what will first bring us the clouds, then the ice as we head through the day tomorrow. Future tracker showing 7 30 tomorrow morning the clouds are in place. Temperatures in the teens and 20s so do be careful. No ice falling from the sky. But there will be some icy patches for your morning commute from the refreeze. Future tracker showing the evening commute is a concern tomorrow. By about 3 30 we begin to see that snow moving in from the west. Temperatures below freezing and then we get warmer air higher in the atmosphere so what this does, it changes that snow over to sleet and freezing rain in time for the evening commute around 5 30 getting the combination of sleet and freezing rain. Then as we head later into the night temperatures warm from a warm front. Around midnight we see that changeover all to rain and it will be rain on wednesday but this is what to expect tuesday afternoon into the evening. Snow will not be an issue. About a coating of snow across most of our viewing area but then on top of that, about a 10th of an inch of rise. Northern Lehigh Valley, berks county a coating to 2inches of snow then up to a quarter inch of ice. Ah as we head for the day on wednesday its rain but then the problem is as we head into thursday a cold front moves through, High Pressure provides some cold air and that will bring some significant snow. The front is the key. Where this front tracks will determine where that low pressure goes but the latest computer mom models are showing that front over our region. If that holds thursday morning were looking at almost a equal chance of a moderate 3 to 6inch snowfall to a heavy six to 9inch snowfall. If we get more than 4. 8inches this will be the biggest snowstorm of the season. The exclusive accuweather 7day forecast tuesday that snow, sleet freezing rain moving in in the afternoon and evening hours, the high 32 degrees. Temperatures rising above freezing into wednesday morning. Wednesday periods of rain but mild 45 degrees. Wednesday Late Wednesday night through midday on thursday this is when we have that threat of accumulating snow. The high only 32 degrees and then things clear out on forty five its just cold on friday with sunshine 30. The good news is the weekend should be beautiful 45 degrees on saturday. We spring forward one hour as we begin Daylight Saving time by sunday morning, 48 degrees and monday partly sunny with a high of 46 degrees.
