Health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman at the big board with more on frost bite dangers. Hi, ali. Hi, guys. Frost bite can set in quicker than you may think as temperatures start to go down over the weekend in some areas it will take just about 10 minutes for frost bite to set in if youre not bundled up. Thats why its vital to dress in layers and limit your time outside. Temperatures in the 20s today didnt stop many runners, walkers or pets along kelly drive but most were wearing several layers to keep warm. Ive got everything. Hat, gloves. Yeah, im good. And his German Shepherd pepper didnt stay out long but dr. David targin says even greater precautions are needed this weekend as temperatures plunge. You need to watch out for two main things and the main things that you need to look for are frost bite and hypothermia. You lose most of your body heat from your head and torso but smaller areas typically suffer frost bite first. Such as your fingertips and your ears so you need to really be aware and cognizant and you need to cover everything up this weekend. As for avid exercisers. When youre running i think it feels about 20 degrees warmer than when youre what actually the temperature is. Thats true. Moving will help keep your body warm but sweating increases the risk for frost bite. Dr. Targin says if youre skiing this weekend, take lots of breaks. As for runners, he recommends moving your workout inside. And thats why we invented treadmills and a gym. Early signs of frost bite include numbness, tingling and skin turning red, white or grayish or appearing waxy looking. Your hands are red. This runner assures me her hands were covered earlier and shell cover them up again. Yeah, they dont feel cold. Theyre not too bad. As for hypothermia its a dangerous and potentially deadly condition when your body temperature dips below 95 degrees. Signs such as shivering or confusion mean you need to go inside and get warm and dry. And kids the elderly and mentally ill are most at risk for problems so you want to keep a close eye on them. For parents its best to do indoor activities with the kids this weekend. Monica, im sure youll be doing a lot of those. A lot of that. Thank you ali. And if you have afiban irregular heartbeat that may put you at five times greater risk of stroke they can pool together in the heart, forming a clot that can break free and travel upstream to the brain, where it can block blood flow and cause a stroke. But if you have afib thats not caused by a heart valve problem, pradaxa can help stop clots from forming. Pradaxa was even proven superior to warfarin at reducing the risk of stroke, in a Clinical Trial without the need for regular blood tests. And, in the rare event of an emergency, pradaxa is the only oral blood thinner other than warfarin with a specific reversal treatment to help your body clot normally again. Pradaxa is not for people who have had a heart valve replacement. Dont stop taking pradaxa without talking to your doctor. Stopping increases your risk of stroke or blood clots ask your doctor if you need to stop pradaxa before any planned medical or dental procedure. Pradaxa can cause serious, and sometimes, fatal bleeding. Dont take pradaxa if you have abnormal bleeding. And seek immediate medical care for unexpected signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Pradaxa may increase your bleeding risk if youre 75 or older, have kidney problems, stomach ulcers, a bleeding condition, or take certain medicines.
