Heres whats happening on action news friday evening. Peco customers beware. The feds are investigating a telephone scam making the rounds in our area and across the can country. Well have the details. A fire is still smoldering after a thunderous gas explosion rocked a manhattan neighborhood. And a quick thinking bus driver jumps into action just in the nick of time saving dozens of children. And now the details a scam is causing panic with utility customers all across the country. Con artists are calling and threatening to shut off their service. Consumer reporter nydia han has the details. Reporter the consumer we interviewed is a peco customer but this same scam is affecting customers of all kinds of utilities including water and gas. Now those different Utility Companies all across the can country are working together with police and fbi to protect people from scary situations like the one youre going the hear about. Reporter patti brat is shaken up. Im upset because i almost gave somebody 1,500 of my hard earned money. Reporter brat owns dubees bar and says last friday somebody called her claiming to be from peco. That my service was being terminated at 6 30 due to nonpayment. Reporter brett was told she ode 1,498. The last payment that i made wasnt credited to my account because there was some sort of a glitch with their computers. Reporter brett was told to go to a Grocery Store to buy reloadable debit or cash cards to make immediate payment. Because i went into panic mode i called one of my employees to come in here and cover for me so that i could go out and pick up these cards. I had the cards in my hand. Reporter so, you were just about to fall for that. Fortunately at the store brett called peco directly and in the nick of time was told. Do not do it. Its a scam. Since late 2011 weve had 200460 customers that have been targeted. About 340 of those customers have been taken by the scam for a total of 365000. Reporter peco never insists on payment via a prepaid or reloadable card and will never shut off service with only a few hours notice. Customers get a 10 day notice like this. Well also provide you 72 hours notice and then again try to call you several times prior to the termination. Reporter even on pecos last call, it will give you 24 hours to pay. Any time someone calls you claiming to be with a Certain Company or utility and you find yourself questioning who is really on the other end of the line, he wasnt and call the company directly. Again, thats what brett did and it saved her from throwing away 1,500. Im nydia han, channel6 action news. In other news tonight firefighters still putting water on the rubble of several apartment buildings in the east village of manhattan after yesterdays explosion and seven alarm fire. Police say at least two people are still missing and 22 were injured after the powerful blast sent flames soaring and debris flying. Reporter a day later and a mountain of debris still seethes and smolders still too hot, too dangerous for anyone to approach. Firefighters still spray water but from a safe distance. The details of what happened are buried there in the mountain of burning beams and twisted steel. The debris that just yesterday was the stuff of peoples lives. It could be days before the answers are uncovered. Theres a lot more we need to learn. We will not have all the access until we can access 121 Second Avenue fully and particularly get into the basement area. Thats going to take time because of the amount of the debris thats been creator. Got to be very methodical. Got to get the fire out create a safe environment. Once the fire is out and fd is comfortable theyll start going through that debris meticulously. Reporter when the first explosion ripped through the east village restaurant and the raging fire that will followed consumed the buildings around it more than 20 people were injured. There were people inside and nearby who still have not been account canned for a day later. Today, they brought in backhoes to be ready to pull apart the rubble and search dogs if case they were needed but its really still too early. Police say this started last night in the 1500 block of north conestoga street. Two men were getting off a trolley when they were approached by two other men who tried to rob them. One of the robbers pulled a gun and then so did one of the victims. Police say the robbers and the victim both died in a shootout. The second victim is in the hospital is that expected to survive. The second robber is under arrest. From our delaware news room tonight a 16yearold is among five people accused in a double shooting over the weekend. Happened early sunday morning in the rogers manor park. Two men were shot, one was hit in the face. Investigators say these men 21yearold jorge ayala 19yearold Carlos Hernandez 20yearold khalif mier and 18 year old joshua scrogs are responsible. Police say the suspects lured the victims to the area under the premise of a drug deal. Philadelphia police are searching for the two men who punched a septa bus driver in the face. It happened around 12 30 this morning at broad and lehigh in the citys glenwood section. The driver was taken to Temple University hospital. Well, this is the second time this week a septa bus driver was attacked. A delaware woman who became severely ill during a caribbean vacation is improving. Theresa divine her husband Steven Esmond and their two sons are hospitalized for suspected pesticide poisoning. They fell ill at the Virgin Islands resort when a nearby room was treated way powerful chemical. They were flown back to the u. S. For treatment. Esmond and his two sons remain in critical can condition. A colorado woman accused of cutting open a pregnant womans belly and taken her unborn baby will not be charged with murder even though that baby died. Republican lawmakers plan to introduce legislation to change that, though. Under colorado law a person can be charged with murdering a baby only if theres evidence it survived apart from its mother. 34yearold donell lane is accused of attacking Michelle Watkins and cutting out her baby. Lawmakers are drafting laws to protest unborn children. The president announced that an investigation found that the chant began on a leadership cruise sponsored by the national sae organization four years ago. It was then brought back to the ou chapter where it was shared with members and pledges. The chant includes references to lynching and to how the fraternity would never accept black members. Italys highest court has just ruled that amanda knox is off the hook for the murder of her roommate in 2009. Knox was convicted of killing and was then acquitted and then was reconvicted. The bus was full of kids when it suddenly caught on fire this morning in front of a middle school. The School Bus Driver is being hailed as a hero for safely getting all of the students off. No one was hurt. Investigators are still working to find out what started the blaze. The secret service has issued new guidelines on drinking and using government issued vehicles. Friday night, two teenagers are in can custody in connection with a rape investigation and a bus fire forces the evacuation of an Elementary School in mercer county. But the big story on action news tonight has been a mystery since september 28th. The circumstances that led to the deaths of Cooper Health systems ceo John Sheridan and his wife, joyce. But according to prosecutors it is a mystery no more. Live in our new jersey news room is correspondent Nora Muchanic and nora, youve got the full story tonight. Reporter jim prosecutors say it was a murdersuicide committed by this typically mild mannered executive who apparently wasnt acting like himself in the days leading up to this. Investigators concluded on the night of september 28, 2014 inside this skillman home Cooper Health systems ceo John Sheridan fatally stabbed his wife set a fire and committed suicide. The Somerset County Prosecutor Says prior to the couples death friends and colleagues described the former state transportation commissioner as upset and withdrawn concerned about work and that it was apparent that Joyce Sheridan was worried and upset because she, too recognized John Sheridan was exhibiting levels of apprehension atypical to his usual calm and deliberative manner. The report says Joyce Sheridan is retired teacher suffered eight wounds to the head an fatal stab wound to the chest. Police found her on the floor of an upstairs bedroom of the home where they were responding to reports of a fire. Authorities say John Sheridans dna was found on a half empty gas can found inside the room and he was alive after the fire started. He was found with five broken ribs under a burning piece of furniture. His autopsy shows he died of smoke inhalation and Sharp Force Injuries but the two knives recovered from the scene did not cause those injuries. Officials came to the murdersuicide conclusion based on a number of factors nothing was taken from the home there wasnt no forced entry. The fact the knives, gasoline and matches all came from inside the house and the difference in the stab wounds they suffered. The nature and number of the wounds sustained by Joyce Sheridan were extensive and included defensive wounds on her hands. Juxtaposed to her wounds there was an absence of defensive wounds found on
