He took time today to shake their hands, to say thank you and well get to it all in a moment. But first here, a developing story tonight out of atlanta. An attack at a courthouse, a deadly plot stopped. These dramatic images. Keep your eye on the suv there. Just listen. [ sirens ] you can hear the sirens, see the orange smoke there. And now word of a hero on the scene. Abcs Steve Osunsami is there. [ gun fire ] reporter thats the sound of gunfire, just before lunch at the Forsyth County courthouse north of atlanta. An eyewitness across the street recording it on a cell phone. I heard pap, pap, pap, maybe three to four. Reporter police say the gunman was an antigovernment sovereign citizen who had a Court Hearing today on drug and weapons charges. They say that dennis marx was trying to drive this silver suv into the front of the courthouse, and shot a deputy working outside. Deputy daniel rush fired back and saved the day. He was very close to being a major catastrophe. And the deputy that was shot averted what would have been a whole lot more deaths. Reporter witnesses say other officers instantly swarmed the scene, shooting and killing the gunman. The car jumped the curb and landed right by the courthouse steps and then the police pulled up, they shot win domes out of the car and the guy fell out on the ground. Reporter police say marx came prepared to occupy the courthouse, armed with explosives, smoke grenades that you see in this video and plenty of ammunition. The fbi says so called sovereign citizens are domestic terrorists. Today, 300,000 strong. Many refuse to pay taxes and believe the government is illegitimate. Police were worried that the gunmans home was trapped. They cant say it enough tonight, that that deputy saved many, many lives. Hes hospitalized, but hes okay. David . No question, the hero deputy. Steve, thank you. We move on now to the heartland, where a new and dangerous stormfront is moving in right now. 30 million families warned of Severe Weather tonight. This is what they are seeing. What looks like a funnel cloud in colorado. And in nebraska. The radar map saying it all tonight. Severe storm warnings. Abcs Clayton Sandell following it all for us tonight. Reporter storms rip up a wild weather weekend. Tornado on the ground. Reporter at least half a dozen or the nay domes reported in the last 24 hours. This one in nebraska. Heavy rain causing the roof of this oklahoma Apartment Building to collapse. Over 15,000 lightning strikes from oklahoma to georgia in the last 24 hours. And a reminder tonight of the power of lightning. Watch again in slow motion, the hottest example of natures fury hit this truck in canada last week. Thankfully, everyone is okay. Tonight, Severe Weather will stretch 1,500 miles from wyoming to florida. 30 Million People in the path. The storms are already deadly. In arkansas, powerful winds knocked down trees, killing two people. This afternoon, high winds returning, tossing cars, sending trampolines flying into power lines and wrapping sheets of metal around power poles. And tonight, funnel clouds spinning in arkansas. Get in the truck reporter now, some parts of colorado got hit with nearly seven inches of rain today. And tonight, forecasters are calling for 70mileanhour winds, hail the size of golf balls, and possibly even more tornadoes. David . All right, Clayton Sandell, thank you. And tonight, just look at the same beach, the American Flag there. Here at home, 1 million rose petals released over the statue of liberty today. In washington, d. C. , veterans remembering at the world war ii memorial. Tonight, so many of you sending in your stories. Well have it in your voice later in the broadcast. But first, abcs chief courthouse correspondent Jonathan Karl is there tonight, traveling with the president. Reporter from president obama today, a soaring tribute to the heroes who turned the tide of history 70 years ago. These men waged war so that we might know peace. They sacrificed so that we might be free. They fought in hopes of a day when wed no longer need to fight. Reporter all told more than 150,000 allied trooped took part in the dday invasion. One of the hardest fought and important battles of all time. Whenever the world makes you cynical, whenever you doubt that courage and goodness is possible, stop and think of these men. Reporter men like cosmo uttero, just 20 when he landed on omaha beach. Now returning with his daughter and granddaughter for an emotional first time. General bradley said every man who was here landed on that beach that day is a hero. Yep. Reporter that includes you. Im just thankful to be here, but i never looked at it as being a herotype thing. You do what you have to do. Reporter there are only a handful of photographs from that day, and vivid memories from men like cosmo. Bullets are bad, but its the artillery bombing. Pause because yourself always feeling to see if you still got your legs, your arms. I know you wouldnt feel it if they blew off. Ive been blessed, lucky. Reporter the sacrifice is almost unimaginable. More americans died in 24 hours on dday than have been killed in ten years of war in afghanistan. Don jakeway, now 92, parachuted in, nearly twothirds of the men in his squad were killed. In my squad alone, theyre buried here, ray balair, the other was art vachon, the other was medford. How they missed me, i dont know. Reporter most of these men will never see normandy again, which is why cosmo uttero decided to take a little piece of the place back home. I just reached down and got a handful of sand to take home with me as a memory. Reporter there was a lot of speculation today about whether president obama would bee with vladimir putin, also here for the dday commemoration. Despite all the tension surrounding russias actions in ukraine, the two men did meet and have a short, seemingly cordial conversation. I had, because of the force of the fall, i had some i had double vision for a short period of time and i had some dizziness. Trouble talking . No, i had no i had no problems. The only thing headaches . No. I didnt have any of that. I felt fine. And i felt it was kind of silly that i was supposed to stay in bed. I ran into congressman paul ryan at the inauguration last year and i had read he was this great athlete, i said, congressman, did you ever have a concussion. He said, oh, yes. I had several. I think three. And the last one was serious but my mother made me stay in, because what happens to athletes, soldiers, young people in car accidents, all the reasons why people get concussions, is, they kind of shake it off. And i felt like, you know, i can i can get back up. I can go to work. And the doctor said, no, youre going to say and rest because then you will have a complete recovery. So, fast forward, i go home for christmas, go to new york for christmas and i want to go back to work and so my doctor say, okay, lets just do, you know, an mri to make sure that everythings healing as we think it is. Heres what they say. They say, the good news is, the concussion is totally resolving like we told you, its going to be fine. The bad news is, youve developed a clot and you Must Immediately go the hospital. We have to immediately put you on blood thinners. Because you had a clot in your right leg before when you were traveling i have. Are they related . Yes, blood thinners. For life . Probably. But i dont mind, because i dont ever want to have to go through that again. So, no lingering effects . No lingers effects. Of any kind . Nope, nope. So, you would release your medical records if you ran for president . I would do what other candidates have done, absolutely. What would you like to say to karl rove about your brain . That i know he was called bushs brain in one of the books written about him and i wish him well. Age. Age, yes, isnt it great to be our age . My name is Ann Martin Berry and this is the story of my father, freeman h. Martin. Kathleen malloy dockerty. My grandfather. There was kira and the story of Clarence Brown liriker. Everybody called him c. B. What my grandfather used to tell me about dday was that he was amazed that he made it out of the beach alive and that the beach really was called the blood beach for a reason. Reporter waiting at home, his wife, her grandmother. And the family, all these years later, with a letter he wrote home to his love and she read it to us today. No man has a greater love. Yours always, billy. Reporter there was anns father who rode in on the tank. He was one of the ones that went in on one of those tanks. And they were trying to secure the beach. Reporter she still remembers what he told her about looking for a place to sleep on the beaches of normandy. They would look for the white pine tree branches and they would cut those. Because those were softer to sleep on. Reporter tonight, a daughter who misses her dad. My dad was a hero to me every day. Reporter jeans mother was just out of Nursing School when she signed up to go to normandy. Six miles away from those beaches. She had the boots on. She was one of the few that got the pair. Reporter she says there was one thing her mother never forgot. The most striking thing to her was how young they were. That their faces were so young. Reporter so young, so brave, and tonight, worthy of the honor. And one more story from dennis smith, who said his father never spoke of dday until just before he died. He said he was scared to death. They knew Something Big was happening. And they were there to do what they had to do. I certainly think about him a lot. Being dday and what he and many and thousands of others went through. Even though im not a religious person, i did say a little prayer for him and everybody else that was there. And so we choose your here roams, our heroes, too.
