From abc news this is world news now with him t. J. Holmes and reena ninan. A good morning to everyone. Its a crazy crazy evening. We didnt know what the headline was going to be when we came on the air when the curfew went into place. But you know what for all intents and purposes maybe a much calmer night and maybe success in some ways last night. So far at least. We are going to kick it off with baltimore where there is a week long curfew. It got off to a rough start. 24 hours after the city erupted in violence over the death of freddie gray. The crowd supposed to be off the streets by 10 00 p. M. They clashed with police throwing rocks, bricks bottles. Officers quickly got things under control. They will did fire pepper balls and smoke canister. Lets start our coverage with Karen Travers in baltimore for us now. Karen, hello to you. Reporter good morning, tj andreen na. Right now downtown is a ghost town. The curfew has been in effect for a couple hours. It took awhile to get everybody off the streets but the Police Commissioner last night said its work. Ten people have been raestsed. A very heavy Police Presence throughout the city as officials try and keep calm and avoid the violence we saw last night. Darkness fell over baltimore and a curfew went into effect from 10 00 p. M. To 5 00 a. M. Nobody allowed out on the streets. But not everybody listened. Clear the area. Reporter police went around with bullhorns and broadcast messages from helicopters urging people to go home. There were some minor skirmishes protests are throwing bottles at police who responded with smoke and flash bangs but after that the crowds thinned out. Across west baltimore, they picked up pieces. Yesterday broke my heart. Today i feel proud. Reporter residents coming together to clean up the broken glass and debris. It breaks my heart because those of us who are from baltimore know how hard we fought for those resources and those stores. The cvs pharmacy was looted and burned. I feel sorry for the Senior Citizens now where they going to go to get their medicine. That same corner rioting replaced by peaceful protests. There were no clashes but the anger was simmering. The heavy police prissence across the city. 2,000 National Guardsmen activated 371,000 Police Officers on duty. Acts of violence and destruction of property cannot and will not be tolerated. Reporter baltimore officials are hoping things get back to normal tomorrow. The city schools will reopen today and the Baltimore Orioles will finally play a home game in afternoon at camden yards. But tj and reena, theres a twist. This game will not be open to the public. No fans will be let inside. The gates will be locked. The only people inside there the players. Wow. How incredibly odd. Butable. Karen, theres been criticism over the way the city responded to the violence and that fire at cvs. What are you hearing . Reporter certainly issues about the timing of things the governor, larry hogan, a republican said that the mayor took too long to call up the National Guard that they were waiting for cues and directions from baltimore officials before they could do that. Now, larry hogan did say normally it takes eight hours to get the National Guard fully up and activated in these circumstances. He said they did it in three hours. 1700 guardsmen were in baltimore in place and working with Law Enforcement officials. It was a very tremendous Police Presence 1,000 Police Officers in addition to those National Guardsmen. Karen travers reporting live for us this morning in baltimore. Thank you so much. Well check in with you again. At least ten people were arrested since the curfew went into effect. Police commissioner saying hes pleased the Community Leaders and clergy are urging calm. You are seeing some of them here creating a buffer zone between officers and protests are. Again, this is an incredible and important image to see because the battles and so much of what the back and forth youve been seeing on the streets of baltimore has been about the police force and what theyre supposed to do for the Africanamerican Community protect them. A black man died in police custody. But youre seeing black men come together to protect the police. This is a very important image and one of the most powerful ones you see coming out of baltimore. Our coverage continues now with mary bruce. Shes looking at the mood of the city after this curfew. Reporter its well past the curfew here in baltimore. Police are ramping up their blessence. You can hear them coming urging not only the residents to go home but now the media, as well. Clearly trying to ensure that the scene here does not turn into what we saw just 24 hours ago. So far very far from that. Instead of the chaos that erupted right here on these streets, we have been seeing calls from residents, calls from members of the community to go home to end this situation peacefully. In fact just a short while ago, woo he saw an maryland representative Elijah Cumming taking over the loud speaker from the officials urging everyone to end this situation calmly. As you can see, not everyone is heeding those warnings. There are so many members of this community that feel very strongly that this is their neighborhood their community and they have a right to be out here with or without a curfew. Mary bruce, abc news west baltimore. Thank you, mary. Stay with abc news as we monitor the tensions in baltimore this morning. In mexico i boarded a chopper for a 45minute flight over the desert to the village of punt ta twaka. Its here i meet up with dan baird, head instructor from the california survival school. Why would anyone in their right mind jump out of a helicopter in the middle of nowhere with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the shoes on their feet . Well the plan is for dan to teach me how to survive. Whoo. That was awesome. But its a plunge into 70 degrees water as the rush subsides and i acclimate to the temperature, reality sets in. Now what . Your shoes are impeding your swimming. You want to relax. The first thing dan tells me to do is take off my shoes and tie them around my neck. Shoes are not conducive to treading water and we may be here for a while. The first thing we do is maintain our breathing. Get it slowed down. Slow down our heart rate and figure out how to maintain a float. We do that by i just took my pants off. Didnt think id do this on tv ever. Tie up the legs tight just to make sure we dont waste air space by tying them too far up the pant leg. Its a skill ta takes practice. By filling the legs with air, ive turned my pants into a life preserver. As for avoiding sharks as experts told us last year in the bahamas, dont thrash around. You look like food. If youre with another person link arms back to back to fight them off with your legs. You dont see land what do you do . You just have to stay calm. And you can conserve your energy. Dan says your number one enemy is panic. If i didnt have a float like a set of pants, another option would be our dead mans float. We fill our lungs with air. Uhhuh. Put yourself face down. And just let yourself in float till you feel like you need to take another breath. A plunge from the air i wont soon forget. Whoo. All to help you survive the unthinkable. Matt gutman abc news.
