Firefighters say every single structure in the town of fairdale west of chicago, is damaged. Nearby restaurant demolished. Patrons and workers took refuge in the basement. Some had to be dug out by firefighters. Were only told there are minor injuries from that restaurant. It was huge. First im hoping it doesnt turn north and of course thats a selfish thought and then it is i hope everybody else in its path is okay. Fairdale the town were told not a single structure was spared some type of damage. Reporter were told there are 50 structures in town here a small town 150 people the population here. Authorities say they believe every structure in town was touched by the storm in some way. If there is damage to every structure here. The storm rolled in after 7 00 tonight and jumped around a 50 mile stretch of the area creating this damage. Right now its the middle of the night. Complete darkness. So getting an accurate assess of how severe everything was is not going to happen until daytime. As you might imagine, everyone here is concerned because it does not look god. Do we know anything about fatalities at this point, alex . Reporter at this point, we know theres at least one confirmed fatality. We know authorities are still trying to go in some areas door to door to assess the situation and make sure theres no one trapped in those homes that have been damaged. At this point, just one confirmed fatality. You mentioned that restaurant near here in the town of rochelle. There were about 12 people according to authorities who had to be rescued from that restaurant. They were caught in a building in the middle of the storm. Then that building collapsed. So authorities had to perform rescue operations there to get at least 1 2 people out of there. At this point, because it is completely dark authorities are trying to do what they can to make sure if someone is out there and needs help is getting it. Theres been a red cross building thats been designated where those who are here and need somewhere to go for the night and for the next couple of days have been going to. Its going to be a lott long night here them situation here just beginning as people try to figure out how severe the damage was and really what it is going to take to move forward. A series of tornados tore through Northern Illinois. Look at the pictures. The tornados flattened some buildings, damaged others. Were talking about a rural area west of chicago, a tiny town named fairdale. Every structure there has been damaged. Alex perez is there. We are seeing some of the pictures. You are getting there not long ago. Put it in to words for us. Reporter the devastation here, t. J. , is amazing to see how quickly all of this happened here. Authorities updated the media a couple of minutes ago here. They are confirming a lot of what we already knew. Tornado, big storm moved through here about 7 15 thursday night and created all of this damage. They say they believe it sporadically sort of hopped and jumped around a 50mile stretch of the area creating a lot of damage, particularly here in fairdale. There are 50 structures or so here and authorities believe all 50 homes were damaged in some way. A lot of them were flattened according to authorities. Right now they are beginning the process of well, they wont really begin the process of assessing the complete damage until tomorrow morning but tonight they are making sure theres no one trapped in any of the homes and making sure that everyone is accounted for. We know at this point, at least one fatality, a 67yearold woman that apparently was at home when the tornado struck her neighborhood here. And at least seven others, authorities say, that were injured and had to be treated for their injuries. So the night really just beginning here. We wont have a concrete, more solid idea of how severe the damage was until morning. Still a lot of work to be done here. There was some concern, alex, yesterday there would be tornados in the midwest. Do we know if these residents received any heads up before this struck . Reporter we have heard from some residents and others here that there was warning. There were sirens going off when this happened. As authorities pointed out, a lot of the homes that were damaged were lighter homes, that were not necessarily built to handle those kinds of winds that blew through here last night. There were some warnings but even with those warnings we are seeing a lot of damage. In a neighboring town here, there was a restaurant where about 12 people were caught in the restaurant. The building collapsed. Authorities spent a good amount of time trying to rescue those people. Our understanding from police is they were able to get everyone out, 12 people out of that structure. But its a difficult situation. As you might imagine, authorities are responding from surrounding areas trying to make sure that if someone here needs help they get it.
