Airport, they say operations are normal but at heightened alert. Officials recommend allowing today. We are going to bring you cleat coverage on the brussels attacks in just a moment, but as we mentioned president obama i in cuba today for his final day of this historic visit. He addressed the people of cuba, and hee met with civil leaders. We have Live Team Coverage in havana today. Our colleagues Calvin Hughes and Victor Oquendo are both there live foror us. Gentlemen, start us off. Reporter laurie and janine what a day so far for the president giving a sweeping speech in downtown havana. Victor has had a chance to talk to people and get their reaction on the island of what people had to say. He touched on so many issues. He touched on so many issues. You knew what kindd of moment this was for him and he stepped up and delivered a speech. I bounced around from hometohome joining people in watched live. First you have to let the shock set in they president of the United States in their living rooms. If they werent wating on tv, they were listening on the radio, very impressed what he had to say, hoping for more change. Reperter the issues that he touched on range in so many different areas from american democracy he talked about how their aree struggles back in the u. S, there are issues even telling his own story to sort of symbolize just how many issues that the u. S. Has or american democracy how it struggles with him. He says here im not looking to tell you how to run your country, but i do recommend doing certain things like having free and Fair Elections and allowing people to speak and assemble. Lets take a listen to what the president had to say in that regard. I believe that every person should be equal under the lawaw every child deserves the dignity that comes with education and heads. I believe citizens should be free to speak their mind without fearar to organize and to criticize their government and to protest peacefully. And that the rule o o law should not include arbitrary detentions of people who exercise those rights. Reporter i will mind you, that particular part of the speech given while raul castro, an Old Revolutionary in the audience in the same place as an american president speaking about democracy in communist cuba. In. The fact that this just happened. He also found ways to sneak in a little bit of levity into the speech as well getting some applause and laughter out of this, mentioning miami specifically bringing up pit finding commonalities was a major point in the speech. Reporter i think thats the president s way of reaching out to the millennials on the island and speaking to them directly he tried yesterday by having the cuban entrepreneurship dialogue that he had in old havana. Lets take a listen how the president reached out to young cubans here on the island. Many suggested i come hereand ask the people of cuba to tear something down, but im appealing to the young people of cuba who will lift something up, build somethingew. Push. [speaking foreign language] reporter t president reaching out to young cubans on the island and cuban amemericans back in south florida as well. He talked about the pain of being ripped apart from your country, the pain of regrouping with family members and not commonality of having reconciliation knowing that these families were ripped apart years ago but yet they never stayed too far apart simply because they believe in t fact that the power of the family needs to stay together. Thats something you can relate to. Absolutely. He said a lot about family. He said i believe in the cuban family a major quote in his speech. Speaking of families here on the island, as i mentioned earlier, i was bouncing and from hometohome and the southbound and people were watched on their outdated, yes, oil but still function tvs not the best quality. Sometimes you could barely make out bamas face but you could see him with the picture of the american and cuban flag behind them. If they didnt have a television, radio was an option. In the hustle and bustle of old havana you could hear the president as he spoke live to the cuban people. Reporter the president brought up the fact Jackie Robinson played baseball on cuban soil before he made his thats something that is not lost on the moment here, because there is a baseball game that is going to take place with the Tampa Bay Rays and Cuba National baseball team. I know thats something that you are looking forward to as l lg as as well as a lot of other cuban americans as well. No doubtn i was a baseball fan first. Thats something you love to see. For the people who cant go to the game, they will, no doubt, be watchingt home. Everyone has been very supportive of all the ihprovements made to the stadium which desperately needed it. We should also mention it this game, the 50,000 people who will be attending were invited. For some of them they may not be too familiar with the game even though baseball is very popular here on the island. We do need to mention that. They were given guidelines on how to behave at the game. So while this is an amazing experience thats about to happen here, for some people it is not quite that. Repororr it is known that for the baseball defectors here, some cuban defectors who now play in Major League Baseball replayed on staterun television here, those players and their grt moments on the field are omitted from the highlights. So a lot of people may know of players who have defected here but they really dont get to cheer them on from their livingroom. So that, as you mentioned, is something that is, you know, what cubans on the island will have to deal with and kno that that has taken place. But also at the stadium today you talk about the invitees but it will be interesting to see where the president sits. Oh, no doubt about it. We are all wondeng where he will be for the few innings he will be attending the game. Is he going to be anywhere near raul castro, ill he step into the dugout is this were not sure jus yet. No doubt one of those people who left cuba on a boaoa some years ago plays for the tampa bay and will be back on the island. Reporter he had a great moment with his family. We had a chance to talk with a we have talked about castro and obama and not oy the question that casaso got but the moment when casaso lifted president obamas arm. That was a moment that a cuban diplomat just told me moments ago was something that raul castro has only done to his brother fidel castro in a gesture of affection. We will have much moref that coming up later in the broadcast on local 10 news at 4 00. Fofo now im Calvin Hughes reporting live from havana with my colleague Victor Oquendo. Back to you. Anchor just about 10 00 in morning president obama people speaking to them directly. This all happened where you see right here. It was havanas el grande and cuban leader raul castro was there listening. For all of our differences, the cuban and American People share common values in their own lives. A sense of patriotism and a sense of pride. A lot of pride. Anchor t t president also went on to see he believes every person should be equal under the law and be free to speak their minds without fear. Anchor many cuban americans in south florida, they were listening closely to president obamas speech today. Anchor he spoke directly to them as well. Cuban exiles here. Lets get to Glenna Milberg joining us live from miami with reaction. Glenna, he mentioned miami four or five times, didnt he . Reportfr we are and where we are in miami is we landed at the cuban american nationana this office was filled with people glued to the Television Sets on the wall watching this speech. Whats so significant about this is that the chairman of the board here actually was one of the people who had hand in framing for the president what he would say in his speech directly to the cuban people for the first time. An extraordinary opportunity and by all accounts here they feel like he really scored with some small exceptions. But really the first timim that the cuban people heard directly from the president that the United States is not their enemy. This is s huge myth busted because most of these people have grown up listening to the castro regime blame the u. S. For all of the ills and misery they may face. That was an important headline to the people here today. The other thing was this speech was supposed to be empowering saying to the cuban people the future is in your hands. Here are the tools that you need. There were three very specific to the president that he hoped he mentioned and he did, direct employment, not employment from the cuban government but direct employment to employees, free and open internet. There is the start of that. By no means the end but a start and a single currency. They dont want people to be empowered with an american dollar and other people have cun pecos. Single currency is an important tool eventually. There are four Political Prisoners in this office. There are people whose families, whose fathers have been assassinated by raul castros people decades ago. For them they would have liked to have heard the president be a bit tougher on repudiating human rights violations. That was not a tough stance he took in his speech but according to everyone here they think the speech was a step in the right direction. Its difficult. It is a difficult position that the Exile Community is in, butut we have to believe in our people. People, and im of the belief and im very optimistic that, you know, they can be the architects of change on the island. Reporter all right. I wanted to show you here, this is a list of Political Prisoners. I know it is tough to see in the daylight and the glare, but a list of Political Prisoners in prison in cuba that Cuban American National foundation made a list of yesterday you remember after raul castro in his speech yesterday said in a very awkward answer to a question, oh, Political Prisoners . Do we have them. Please, send me a list and we will release them by tonight. This office was one of many offices that compiled lists of Political Prisoners with no hope that they would be released because the rules are quite different and perceptions are quite different there about who might be a political prisoner. In fact, the feeling in here is they are quite sure the acts of violations might get worse as a. s government feels they are losing control now that the president h spoken directly to the people. They expect it to get worse before it gets better but hopeful it will get better. Im Glenna Milberg live in miami. Local 10 news. So now finally temperatures are warming up to those low 70s. Still hanging on to the upper 60s down in the keys bececause the cloud cover is still there. Another big story have been the winds. The winds continue to be up to 17 miles p p hour in homestead, around 14 and then 13in ft. Lauderdale, miami and these wind afternoon and then start to die off a little bit into the middle part of the week. Now the flow is still out of the northeast and thats exactly where these clouds are moving towards but at the se time being pushed to the south of us because of a high that is situated over the south earn u. S. Allowing for that northerly flow to take in and bring us a little more sunshine behind the clouds or at least to the north of 9 the clouds. It will become sunnier, it is just taking its time. Also still windy out therere but definitely milder this afternoon compared to yesterday and by tomorrow not as windy but stillll breezy, however, definitely warmer. We will have an east wind returnin as that high pushes away over the central atlantic and then well be talking about another system whichch will bring Severe Threat by tomorrow across the central plains. S. Im talking about from texas to the midwest to st. Louis. Dallas to st. Louis will most likely see Severe Weather meanwhile this will help bring us back moisture and the showers starting on thursday. If you want to still head out to the beach today pase be careful. As we continue on warming up, we will eventually get to the mid 70s with a high of 76. Some of us though may still stay in the low 70s especially down in the keys where the cloud cor is still hanging on. 10 chance for showers today. So its a dry day today and mainly dry tomorrow but grab those umbrellas, put the sweaters away. We will be arming up thursday. The humidity will be back and so will the rain. Anchor thank you.
