A Major Medical breakthrough that may offer some hope to womeme who have been struggling to get pregnant. Doctors from the Cleveland Clinic performed the first uterine transplant in the United States and abcs linsey davis has that story. Reporter on monday, the Cleveland Clinic described how a team of 70 top experts completed the first ever uterusransplant in the u. S. Last month giving new hope to women unable to carry a child. These women are born with normal ovaries that produce healthy eggs. The problem is that there is nowhere for these eggs to go. Reperter the patient is 26yearold lindsey. She was the first of ten scheduled to undergo this. I was 16 and w w told i would never have children and here we are today at the beginning of that journey. Reporter heres how it works. Nonfunctioning uterussets a healthy uterus from a deceased donor implanand. After a year fertilized eggs are transferred one by one until the woman becomes pregnant. As for indsey she still has a year of antirejeekz medication ahead of her before finding out if she can get pregnant. Her doctors remain confident but she says she has more than just them to thank. Ashton, this is a surgery for women born without a uterus, something most of u havent heard of but something that isnt that rare. We usually talk go a transplant as saving a life. In this case its about potentially giving one. Were talking here about a and this is really a nail our of development of the genital organs in a woman that affects 1 in 5,000 female births. They are born without a uterus and some cases without a lower genital tract but do have functioning ovaries but can be biological parents but cannot carry. They have to survive for a year taking immunotherapy and drugs and will there be any different ivf from a regular woman than one who had a transplant 13 a couple big differences. When she undergoes ivf she will only be getting one embryo, no twins, she will undergo a planned scheduled elective cesarean section. This isa uterus were going to test in labor and of course she will have to take strong antirejection medication. There is date father on moms and babies born to transplant patients and they do pretty well but thahs not an insignificant hurdle. Had has happened in sweden. Successfully transplanted a uterus there. But surrogacy isnt legal in that country and our country given the fact that a woman can use her eggs and transplant them in another woman, what do you have to say to people who quqution this practice because we have that option . Right, and the opponents here or the critics will say, no question, uterine surrowacy is cheaper, easier and safer, but it really speaks to the powerful biologic, emotional, psych logic drive that women have to carry their own children. Its not the only path to parenthood but have to remember the coext, 1967 the worlds first heart transplant, almost 50 years later this is a historic event in Womens Health. You just g ge me chills. It was strange having to throw myself back into the frame of mind. The first time mom to 14yearold kaia tweeted over the weekend a picture of her family at the beach gushing, the loves of my life. Looking back she says she was terrified to speak out. But the love and support she received these past few months has been overwhelming. I was floored. I feel much more exposed, yes, but in a great way.
