I hear you over there. Crock pot meals are awesome when its cloudy outside, okay . We have got rain moving out of our area, so thats wonderful news for those of you in lake and ashtabula counties. Those showers have moved out into the lake, but if youre in mentor, painesville, madison or ashtabula, you will probably notice wet roads this morning. The rain is py we approach the farmington area. Probably about the next 15 minutes or so, and then southern and central ashtabula about 6 41. Maybe even a little sooner than that before rain move in for you so we do have some patchy stuff out there for your bust stop walk or ride this morning. I think rain will pick up, though, later today. We have kind of hitormiss onagain offagain stuff. Lunchtime, ride home, outdoor recess not looking so fantastic breezy as well with temperatures topping out around 67 degrees. So when is it going to warm back up . When do we see some sunshine . Well talk about it coming up at about 6 15. Brian all right, sam. Youre hearing things over there. As for traffic, everything is looking pretty good. Drive times to cleveland are all on time. Well let you know if anything pops up. Tia this is huge in our community. The heroin epidemic continues to ravage communities, and this victims, babies born right here in northeast ohio sadly addicted to drugs. Brian we first put this story on our mobile app on monday morning, and the response has been overwhelming. A little tough to watch. Danny carlson spoke to a mom struggling to stay sober for her child. Reporter one cleveland hospital is on track to see the largest number of babies born addicted to opiates. Its a number that keeps increasing year after year. Start in their 20s using pills prescribed by a doctor. Then when the pills get too expensive, switch to heroin and couldnt get off. When i was pregnant, i would use and bawl my eyes out because i felt so gimuilty. Reporter amanda started to drink at age 10 and moved on to pot, pills and heroin. Like in my soul i wanted to stop. I didnt know how. Reporter she says she did the d getting clean and then relapsing over and over. Then getting pregnant with little valencia. A lot of people, you know, they dont understand why its so hard for a mother to remain sober. They think because youve got kids that it should be the easiest thing in the world, you know. Thats not the case. I guarantee you most mothers out there go to bed every night crying and regretting everything reporter she said she dieded to get help, because she saw babies go through the torture of withdrawals hours and days after being born and didnt want that for her little girl. Like, overwhelming. You cant breathe guilt. As a mother you love your children. Reporter i reached out to each of clevelands three hospitals for statistics on babies born addicted to opiates. Uh didnt respond. At the Cleveland Clinic in 2013 63 babies were born addicted the next year and 82 the year after that. At metro 74 babies in 2013, more than 100 in 2015 and this year were told metro is on track to see 140 babies born addicted to opiates. Thats compared to 7 metro saw in 2002. Id say weve gone from a handful of babies to 3 to 4 of the babies being born dependent. Reporter the rise in addicted moms directed related abusing prescription pain medications and heroin. The effects on the babies can be devastating. As the drugs in the moms system wear off, they get jittery and uncomfortable and their bellies start to cramp. They get diarrhea and get shaky and a highpitched cry that sounds like sad little people. You want to do everything to protect them, and here you are harming them. So its i dont know. Thats just dependent have whats called neonatal abstinence syndrome. It can take weeks to treat. We give babysized doses of morphine by mouth until the babies wean down, and we do it slowly over time. Reporter metro has the mother child dependency program. It aims to help pregnant women deal with the medical and emotional problems tied into their addictions. After the babys birth, Child Services is always involved. How much and what happens and how she responded to her problem. Some people out there watching might say, well, if the mom is addicted to opiates, they dont care about their baby. What would you say to that . I would say this is an addiction, and people they get over them. It is a recoverable disease. Reporter the head of the program says while its important to note that having an addicted parent automatically raises a childs chance of becoming an addict, its not a death sentence. Moms off especially during pregnancy. We see some great turnarounds. Reporter hensley says she and baby valencia are an example of what a Success Story can look like. 15 months may not seem like a long time, but it feels like eternity to me. This is the longest ive been sober in my entire life. That is a powerful, powerful story. Were with dani now. What struck me is a number of things, of course, in that story been addicted to drugs and given birth to a child who is addicted to drugs, to hear her actually tell her story is something else. Reporter and amanda, who we talked to, actually got help early enough on that her baby didnt show problems. Her baby had one really tough night, she said, but her baby wasnt actually born severely addicted like in a lot of the video that you saw. Yeah, i mean, often hear a lot from moms who are going through this. We hear a lot about the opiod epidemic and who its affecting and younger people and people in the suburbs. We dont hear a lot from people. I think you could see in the piece, you know, when we talked with amanda, she felt terrible. I mean, this wasnt something that she wanted to do. Brian it was obvious she did. She tried on her own over and over again to kick this, and she just couldnt. Struggle, you listen to her words, i think it was a really brave thing for her to come forward and say, hey, this is a problem. Its in our community. Its affecting people, and im a real person. Im not just a statistic. Im a real person you can look at and say, i had this problem. I got help. Now im getting better. Brian i think its hard for people to generate compassion when they know what somebody did a helpless baby. Reaction. Its a big part of everything that we do now. The mom is quite honestly taking a beating on social media. So she admitted she made a mistake. She knows that. I mean, at some point do we need to forgive and forget and give him a Second Chance and try and move forward . Well, i mean, i feel like each case is obviously different. Amandas case that talked with us, you know, she said the way was that same story weve heard a lot of times. She got them prescribed by a doctor, got hooked, ended up trying heroin, and by the time she realized it was a problem, it was too late. So you really have to think about each individual case, i feel, before you make a blanket decision about everything. Brian where do we push this next . This is, obviously, something thats continuing to go on, which is why we want to keep this conversation going. Going to be going to the opiate addiction conference. Theres one right here in cleveland today. So were going to go there, listen and learn more about these issues, because as weve seen demonstrated through this story, sometimes it might affect populations, parts of the society, parts of our community that you dont necessarily think about. It is just such a widespread epidemic. Brian its every, every avenue of socioeconomic life that we have here in cleveland. Tia cleveland 19 news launched its spot the Signs Initiative to help raise awareness and advocacy to the growing heroin epidemic affecting so many people across northeast ohio. For more information and resources, please log onto cleveland19. Com and click on the link. Time now is 6 10. I know a lot of people out there worried about in rain. Coming up next we now know two of the three victims in a School Shooting were just 6 years old. This morning were getting answers on how parents can help prevent tragedies like this from tia welcome back. Authorities in South Carolina are trying to figure out what led a 14yearold to open fire at an Elementary School in a investigators say the teen first shot and killed his father on wednesday before going to a small Elementary School there where he shot a teacher and two 6yearold boys. One is in Critical Condition. The suspect is now in police custody. Understandably when Something Like this happens, parents immediately begin asking questions about the security measures at their Childs School. Brian they should. Thats what they should be doing. Cleveland 19s Nichole Vrsansky is getting answers this morning. She spoke about things to look for to make your kid a little more safe in school. Nichole as a parent you drop your kids off at school or they go on the bus, and you take for granted theyre at school and safe. Unfortunately, we know that thats not necessarily the case, and we have to think about this. I spoke with kenneth trump. Hes a local School Security expert that travels the country consulting schools on their preparedness. So as a parent, what can we do . What can we look for . Ken says Pay Attention to arrival and dismissal times if are there adults supervising . Do they have twoway radios if something should happen . During the day, are the doors to your Childs School locked. If you buzz in, is someone there right away to direct you . When you buzz in, can someone possibly get through that door behind you . Ken also talks about the importance of doing School Lockdown drills to practice in the event of an emergency, and not at 9 00 in the morning when its easy. More on those lunch hour periods when things are more chaotic. Point. We go a little more indepth in the next half hour. Ken just arrived and will be in our studio talking about School Security in light of what happened in South Carolina. Samantha time is 6 16 on this cloudy start to your thursday morning. We have breezy conditions and we have some showers to track for you as well. Last night, you walk outside this morning to let the dogs out. You have to take a towel so you dont have muddy paw prints on your floor. That rain is gone. Were still seeing light rain here on clevelands east side. I also have showers out towards the youngstown area. If youre watching us from youngstown, most of this has moved out for you. In the parkman area it is raining middle field and up towards chardon, madison all in line for showers as we approach 6 30 and 7 00. No steady rain in cleveland right now, but i am watching showers to the south. Now, these are south of columbus. Theyre closer to the i77 corridor approaching west virginia. Theres a tim hortons there. Thats how i always know when i look at the map down here. Im like, okay, the rain is coming from the good coffee. These showers are headed towards the north, and if they hold together, they will approach us a little later this morning. Will be after sunrise. My point here is i want you to be prepared for a shower at any time today. Were not forecasting any Severe Weather, but there may be embedded pockets of moderate or heavy rain as showers move through. Again, not an alldaikon stant rain but onagain offagain kind of stuff. You switch on the wipers and drive for a little while and then it stops and maybe a couple of hours later you run into another shower. Thats the setup for today. There into the afternoon. It will feel a lot like yesterday, but yesterday some of us got some sunshine. I dont think well see much, if anything, sunshine for today. For tonight evening forecast features scattered showers, maybe a few rumbles of thunder. So from now through tonight, be prepared for a shower or storm at any time. We are in the 60s overnight. We drop to 61 by 11 00 tonight. Then eventually we fall into the tomorrow morning, and it may also be a wet drive home. We are stuck in this pattern where were going to be seeing onagain offagain showers from now all the way through saturday. Again, i want to stress its not going to rain constantly, but there will be occasional showers around. Brians looking at it like, well, the graphic says. Well, i can only fit so many words on there. You have to turn the tv up. Dont mute me, although when you hear this tempted to press mute. I think the system plaguing us right now will move out by the end of the weekend. So conditions should improve by sunday into monday, and then the middle of next week looks absolutely fantastic. Mid70s and lots of sunshine. I know everyone is ready for that sun to come back out. Brian look at tuesday and wednesday. Looking great. Thanks, sam. Cold storage camera, beautiful shot of the city at 77 are people leaving the city. Traffic looks great and everything is good. Well keep an eye on it, and let you know if theres any slowdowns. Tia time is 6 20. We could soon see a big jump at prices at the gas pump. Brian a second night of protests in california. Tia we have a news alert to tell you about. New video to show you near san diego, california overnight. A second night of protests following the shooting death of a man by police. They released this picture overnight. It shows a man putting a 4inch long cigarette at officers before he was shot. The police chief, geoff davis, says he pulled the device from his pocket, held it with both who were there. Be prepared to pay higher gas prices. Opec nations will cut Oil Production for the First Time Since the Global Financial crisis eight years ago. Its an effort to reduce a global overstock of crude that has depressed oil prices for more than two years and weakened the economies of oilproducing nations. Brian there was this new that broke. Congress approved a bill to prevent a Government Shutdown running another ten weeks, so were good until december 9th. Interesting in this funding agreement. More than a billion dollars to prevent the spread of the zika virus. The indians play the tiger again today in detroit. 1 10 they wrap up the series. Last night they lost 63. You might be thinking the indians are already in the playoffs, who cares whats going on right now. If the season ended today they advantage. Tribe is not playing with a whole lot of urgency. The indians could string some winds together in the final five games, they could have Home Field Advantage in around one. Tia come on indians. Brian why thats important is they have the best home record in baseball. Theyre split, which means how these guys hit at home or on the road are way better at home than they are on the road. The Home Field Advantage for the crowd and all that is important. They seem to play what are you going to do . Tia im still saying world series. Brian i hope so. Tia time is 6 25. If you havent looked out the window yet, we got rain overnight. Sorry, folks, sam has more of it in todays forecast. We hear from her coming up in about four minutes. Brian also coming up, the smashandgrab trend continues. Number 35 for the city of cleveland. Brian you need thatn the rain has arrived overnight in northeast ohio. I hate to break it to you. This stuff is going to be sticking around for the next several days. Tia good morning. Its thursday, september 29th. Im tia ewing. Brian thanks for joining us at 6 30. Im brian duffy. Its an alert weather day. Sam has been busy all morning long tracking this rain all over northeast ohio. Whats up, sam . Samantha well, you know, the rain chances remain high for today and into tomorrow. Its not going to rain time, but there will be waves of rain all the way through the weekend. Windy and cool as well, and an unsettled pattern just really taking shape for us. You can see on our satellite and radar imagery we have some rain and a lot of cloud cover. I dont think well see much, if any, sunshine for today, although i keep my fingers crossed maybe we see a few peeks of it. Here are the showers im following all morning long moving out of the youngstown area into Trumbull Geauga counties. In middlefield, good morning to you, rain pressing through as we speak. In the burton area, rain is knocking on your back doorstep. And madison by about 7 00 in the morning in lake county. You could see some showers with maybe a little thunder. Dont let that alarm you. Its not going to be Severe Weather, just rain with embedded rumbles of thunder. Forecast for today looks like this. In the morning hitormiss and i dont think everyone will see the rain this morning. We continue to see onagain offagain stuff throughout the afternoon and into the evening as well. We take a closer look at the forecast for today, and well talk about when things improve coming up at about 6 45. Guys. Tia thank you so much. We want to look at traffic for you this morning. As you get ready to leave your home, cleveland wide map right now, you see this is i71 north at the jennings. It is starting to slowow smooth sailing, though, on the highways in akron. We also have an accident we need to tell you about on i90 eastbound. There are lanes blocked before the 222nd exit to be aware of that. In terms of drive times, everything out there remains in the green. Brian Cleveland Police are looking for a person that pulled off another smashandgrab on the west side. This seems to be the thing. Tia every morning were talking about this. The latest one happened about wave market and deli on west 127th and lorain. Thats where we find our very own cleveland 19s sia nyorkor getting answers. This is the 35th smashandgrab since january 1st, and this time the suspect did all this damage and only got away with 60 bucks . Sia yes, tia and brian. They got away with 60. Were inside the store. The owners have been kind enough to let us see from their point of view the right there you see glass, bottles, food everywhere. Then you look and you see that atm right there in the middle. Thats usually the goal of these things, is to get the atm and get out of here. Now, that red van backed into here and thats what happened. The atm got stuck under it. Go to the video. You see that red Dodge Caravan reverse back into the store. You can see the impact from bottles and glass going everywhere and you see the guys get out and go through the register looking for cash. Theyre looking for anything they can get their hands on. Heres a closeup of one of the suspects faces. There were four guys. Heres a real up close and personal picture. You see him right there on your screen. If you know him, call police. Now, the store owners tell me that theyre just glad nobody was here and got hurt. It doesnt matter how much they take. Its the dam frustration, you know. The way we have to deal with it. Sia so you can imagine business is going to be closed today as owners work to assess all of the damage, but police were here on the scene processing this. Thousands of dollars of damage left. You saw that guys face on your screen. If you know who he is, call police. There were four guys in that red they got away with about 60 but left thousands of dollars of damage. The 14yearold suspected the pulling the trigger is in custody and also suspected of killing his father. The shooter stopped when a volunteer firefighter actually stepped in and tackled him. Lets go to Nichole Vrsansky now for the very we can do when we are concerned about our childrens safety inside of schools. Nichole kenneth trump travels the country consulting schools about keeping them safe. Since sandy hook you say theres a lot of focus on security, equipment and security cameras which is a good thing. You think the focus really needs to be on Training Staff and students. How do we do that without creating a sense of panic . We have to take a balanced approach. The good anyoning is planning difference. We learned yesterday that kids while the chaos was going on in South Carolina some kids put themselves in a rest room. We want Staff Members to think differently and try things out of the box. Block a fire exit to get people to think on thur feet and do your lockdowns during lunchtime. Many times two or three hours is at lunchtime, and people only practice in the morning. Dont go too far over the top and be ageappropriate and look dealing with and take some balanced stepped to teach them a little bit, dont go too far over the top to scare them. Nichole make sure the schools do lockdown drills. As a parent, were not there. What else can we do to make sure that our kids are being protected . Parents need to be proactive about safety. The number one thing above academics is the safety of your child. When you drop them off, you want to get them back the same way you left them in the morning. Talk with your School Officials and your Parent Organization and and get training yourself and take a look around. Can you walk through the Childs School . Are the doors closed and accesses controlled . Can you get greeted when you get in. If youre in there, do people say, good morning. May i help you . Look at arrive and dismiss am. Do you have adults supervising outside with twoway radios. Its a people issue. School safety is hardware and peopleware, not just hardware and equipment. Nichole theres a lot of privatech schools, but private schools are churches or Community Centers attached. Maybe there are Services Going on in the middle of the school day. Is it more challenging for those schools to be aware of that and focus on that. Schools need to conduct an assessment on the whats around them. Think about derailment and hazmats. If it has a Community Center or church or Charter School in a business district, look around more traffic and more adults and more nonschool people there and the more to reduce the risk in a balanced way. Nichole you also said to talk to your kids about what they see. Theyre there. Are their doors locked . Ageappropriate, though. Kids are 6 years old. Is there a challenge by saying dont you scared. If that guy looks suspicious, if its johnnys dad, thats okay. How do you have that conversation that no information is were both parents. We talk about ageappropriate communications with our kids. We dont talk to a 5 or 6yearold the same way to a 17yearold and 8yearold. We can have conversations early. With young kids, dont open the door for strangers. We teach you to be helpful. If somebody is knocking going to the rest room with a partner, dont open that door. As older kids progress through the years, talk more realistically about some of the awarenesses of whats going on around them. Be aware if you have a friend, someone who makes a threat, you hear a rumor or someone who is in trouble, a friend of yours, you tell a trusting adult. Ear not tattling. Youre helping. Its not a matter of snitching. We want kids aware and prepared but not scared. Nichole thank you for joining us. All great information especially in light of what happened in South Carolina. Tia a lot of things to think about. Time is 6 40. Make sure you have the umbrella, rain the door. Not just for people, sam. Think about fido, too. Samantha this is fergie, our producer laurens doing. We got her all dressed up for the weather, right, in her little rain coat. You have to see this. Its so cute. It has a fire hydrant on it. You want kisses, right . If you walk your dog this morning, take a towel. Heres the dogwalking forecast. Rain off and on through the day, and we dont want any muddy paws we dont want to get those paws muddy. We have a closer look at todays forecast and talk about when the rain ends coming up after the break. Brian okay, sam. Next, we get answers from a poison control expert. Shes a slob. She ate like a pig. A person whos flat chested is very hard to be a 10. Does she have a good body . No. Does she have a fat [expletive] . Absolutely. Do you treat women with respect . I cant say that either. Tia welcome back. For parents this story is just for you. Diluted bleach and water in a bucket, central ohio poison control receives that call a lot. Bleach isnt as harmful as this for the kids. Four years later and the detergent pods are the number one reason parents call for out for. It doesnt take Rocket Science to use them. Detergent pods, but the science inside, the colorful, highly concentrated detergent capsule is deadly and dangerous for a child. It is a major thing in children under 5, especially small children. These are highly concentrated, and they look pretty. Tia Henry Spiller works as the director of central ohios Poison Center at nationwide childrens hospital. In the case of tidepo four years later, its still the number one reason why parents call the Poison Center. So Procter Gamble decided to make a change. The new child guard zipper bag. Same trusted cleaning power in a smarter package. Keep them up, keep them closed, keep them safe. Tia another danger with batteries. This video shows what happens after a 2 1 2 hour period if its a big issue, especially around the holiday season. The batteries can contain harmful chemicals, causing severe tissue damage and even internal burns, but thats not all. I dont think parents realize how dangerous they are. One of those, if they swallow it, it stays in the esophagus and can burn a hole through the esophagus. Tia medications are also a top reason why poison control center. Their bodies are so small, and the dose is really large for them. Parents call the 1800 number freaking out. But there are nurses and pharmacists on the other end answering the phone 24 7. Here are the statistics. Summer is the busiest season for central ohio Poison Center with 250 calls per day. This time of year slows down to 200 calls per day. There are some things, though, that parents can do to make sure childproof everything in the house and keep detergent high off the ground away from toddlers. Heres the number to call if your kids ever ingest something and you arent sure what to do. The number is 18002221222. Brian attention all disney fans. Disney is holding a casting call this weekend looking for the next kid sensation. Theyre casting for a movie wrinkle in time. Theyre looking for a boy mixed race between the ages of 5 and 8. The film stars Reese Witherspoon and oprah. There you go. Oprah and Reese Witherspoon. Tia putting cleveland on the map. Samantha love it. Take your kids out. Maybe you have a little star. Brian a star is born. Samantha a day to stay inside and watch movies, guys. Its cloudy out there and some of you wake up to rain. Time is now 6 47. Send the little ones off with an umbrella, maybe the rain boots today. Whatever it takes to stay dry. Theres spotty stuff around for that bus stop walk or ride, and there may be some for the ride home as well. Cloudy skies on our satellite map, and ive got the radar overlaying on here as well. We have showers moving through the eastern half of our viewing area, and also south of wayne county i have a little bit of rain starting to develop. Thats moving off towards the north. Ive put a time stamp on these half of our viewing area. Northeast ohio, hartsgrove seeing showers right now. They continue to lift generally off towards the north. After 7 00 could be seeing showers in madison, and madison on the lake as well. South of Coshocton County theres rain around the i 70 corridor. South of zanesville, this is all lifting towards the north. If youre in the southern end of the forecast region, be aware that there are going to be some its all courtesy of this big spin that you see here on the map. This is a broad system. On the surface is looks like this, clouds and rain but in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, we have this big thing we call an upper level low. This is how it translates to the satellite and radar imagery. You can pick out the spin. This thing is going to be with us all through the end of the week and even into the start of the weekend. I think it will finally move up closer to sunday, but for today and tomorrow you can see that rain extends all the way out to the midatlantic and the northeast. This system is going to be a pain for a lot of people. For us today cloudy skies, windy conditions, and temperatures running well below what you might expect. You know, weve had a very warm summer. We had a very warm start to september as well. Today were actually running a little below average. Onagain offagain rain. Not a constant, allday rain, but we will be in and out of showers today and tonight as well. Heres your forecast for the evening. The rain chances are high all through the night. So anything you have going on tonight, take an umbrella. You will need it. Maybe you have a pta meeting or kids have afterschool practices. Definitely want to plan for rain in the area.
