The deaths of five women may be connected to one man who appeared in Ashland County court today. The bodies were discovered after one woman called 911 for help. Shanice dunning getting answers now. Shanice Police Believe that to the deaths of up to five wyms whose bodies were found in ashland, richland and marian county earlier this month. Today grate pled not guilty to 23 counts in connection to two of those women and another who survived. Some of the charges include murder, rape and gross abuse of a corpse. This morning he appeared through a judge through a video call. On september 13th, Police Arrested 40yearold grate after a woman he kidnapped called 911. When Police Arrived to the scene, they found the bodies two other women. The women were later identified as Stacy Stanley and elizabeth griffith. He then led them to a third womans body after his arrest and also confessed to killing a fourth woman in marian whose body was found in 2007. Mansfield police are investigating the possibility that grate could be connected to a fifth womans death in ashland, but grate has not been charged for any other crimes yet other than the two women and the home. Disturbing body cam shows the deadly end to a police chase in louisiana last november when a 6yearold boy was killed. We want to warn you, the video is graphic. David begno reports. They claimed after the chase ended that the driver posed a threat when he backed his vehicle towards them. Even though it appears the driver showed both hands to the officers. Two marshalls opened fire. They shot 18 pounds. A 6yearold diagnosed with autism was killed in the chest. His father was driving. Christopher was shot twice but survived. Its a number that keeps increasing year after year. Women who were told typically start in their 20s using pills prescribed by a doctor. Then when the pills get too expensive, switch to heroin and couldnt get off. When i was pregnant, i would use and then bawl my eyes out because i felt so guilty. Reporter amanda started drinking at age 10. She moved on to pot, then pills and then heroin. In my soul i wanted to stop. The dance of the addict. Getting clean and relapsing over and over. And then getting pregnant with little va lins yeah. A lot of people, you know, they dont understand why its so hard for a mother to remain sober. They think because youve got kids that it should be the easiest thing in the world. And thats not the case. I guarantee you, most mothers out there go to bed every night crying and regretting everything that they had done that day. Reporter she says she had seen babies grow through the torture of withdrawal hours and days after being born and didnt want that for her little girl. Like overwhelming. Like you cant breathe guilt. Because as a mother, you love your children. Reporter i reached out to each of clevelands three hospitals for statistics on babies born addicted to opiate. Uh didnt respond to our request. At the cleveland clinic, 63 babies born addicted. After that. At metro, 74 babies were born addicted in 2013. More than 100 in 2015. And this year were told metro is on track to see 140 babies born addicted to opioids. Thats compared to 7 metro saw in 2002. I would say weve gone from a handful of babies to 3 to 4 of the babies being born dependent. Reporter the rise in addicted moms directly related to the rise in young women abusing prescriptio medications and heroin. The effects on their babies can be devastating. As the drugs from the moms system start to wear off, the babies get jittery, they get uncomfortable. Their bellies start to cramp. They sometimes get diarrhea. They get shaky and a real high pitched cry that just sounds like sad little people. You want to do everything to protect them and here you are harming them. So its just i dont know. Born dependent have whats called neonatal abstinent syndrome. We give them medicine to help. Reporter a Program Helps women deal with the medical and emotional problems tied into their addictions. But after the babys birth, were told Child Services is always involved. How much and what happens depends on the individual mom and how she responded to her problems. Some people out there watching might say, well, if the mom is addicted to open yids, they dont care about their baby, what would you say to that .
