Tonight new evidence on a growing drug epidemic in northeast ohio. The Cuyahoga County medical examiner says 12 people died in just a fiveday stretch, march 10th through march 14th. They died from heroin, fen tau nil or fentanyl or a combination. Cleveland saw the most deaths at five. The ages ranged in 2 sick to 62 26 to 62. It is affecting families across the state. And tonight we are asking what can be done to turn things around and save lives. Sara goldenburg is joining us with that part of the story. Right now there is a sixweek wait list to street heroin addiction. More centers are opening up they cant keep up with the call for help. Barbara wolf is recovering from an addiction to heroin has been a long road. I would say it is a struggle in the beginning because i wanted to know when i would start feeling better and when these thoughts were going to leave and when my body was going to start repairing itself. The lorain woman got help from the lacadawa it was her second attempt to get clean. I felt like i was possess possessed. It was zombie mode. They have six facilities from lorain to avon. They offer several levels of treatment from residential to outpatient care. Right now they are treating more than 60 women in one of their out patient programs. We asked how bad the problem really is. On a scale of 1 to 100 i would say a thousand. Over doses and the addiction in general. Barbara is now focused on going back to school and taking care of her kid. I couldnt be more blessed, but recovery is a process just like anything else. I have to maintain on a daily basis. Heroin mixed with the dangerous drug fen tau nil fentanyl is leading to more over doses. You can start from the lowest and keep moving forward and get better. Transitioning has had their challenges. 20 of transgender people report having been assaulted verbally or physically in a health care setting. People get freaked out about it. Carter and gender says going to the doctor is now a positive experience. Because of the caregivers. A more relaxed setting where they are treated with respect. The doctor and the staff are very aware of pronouns. They are very aware of the proper form of address. They are very aware of anna anatomical differences and medications and stuff like that. Dr. Henry yang is a pediatrician and he is also ginger and carters primary the founders of the pride clinic. He says creating a comfortable environment for all of his patients is key.
