And only the second time since the mid eighties, anglers in western iowa will have the chance to reel in big paddlefish on the missouri and big sioux rivers. Reporter christina gree hallva grijalva heads out on the water and tells us more. Paddlefish one of the largest freshwater fish in north america and found right here in the missouri and big sioux rivers. There a pretty neat fish, their a planktavor, they use their bill or their rostrum to try and direct the uh flow of small animals called zooplanktun and similar small fish is what they feed on. Now siouxland prepares for its Second Season of paddlefishing after it had been cancelled since 1986. I got the chance to head out on the Missouri River with members from the d nr and see how their tagging process works. This is an iowa dnr paddlefish tag, it looks actually like a waterfall band and it says right on it iowa dnr, onawu iowa and its got a number on it. These call that number report the date and location of capture as well as the length of the fish. Be sure to measure from the front of the eye to the fork of the tail. All this to help state fisheries agencies better understand and manage populations. Well go back and uh address things and go over some changes that we might want to have for 2017. Also if you catch a paddlefish between 3545 inches long toss it back the fish withinthis slot limit protect the breeding stock.
