A transformative Education Bill passed through the senate and made it to the president s desk today. President obama signed the every Student Succeeds act that overhauls the no child left behind education law under the bush administration. The measure puts more control back in to the states, the heavy focus on testing. Stephanie political corresondent amanda krenz talked with one of the States Education leaders about the new law. Shes here now with our big story. Amanda . Amanda many would say there were good intentions with no child left behind. But it involved too much testing and not enough teaching. Many school didnt like that all the testing was all tied back to the federal government. Now each state can decide whats best for their students. The no child left behind act is being left behind. The new law is the every Student Succeeds act, or essa. The president s signature on this new law mean the federal government will give control back to the states and individual School Districts to make sure their Education System is working. 16 28 the problems came from emphasis on testing and accountability. Roark horn is the director of the School Administrators of iowa. He says School Districts away from the cycle of toomuchtesting. 20 09 theyre not releasing total control of what needs to be done but they are releasing control of how its done and thats where iowa is wellprepared to take on that. Horn says the biggest change classrooms will notice under the new law is that tests will be used how theyre meant to be used, to determine a potential. Overall its a better measure of accountability and student achievment. 20 34 i think were going to take the tenants of every child is important, but with a recognition that doesnt mean we test them to death. Stephanie a des moines woman is in jail for allegedly shooting at another woman during an argument over a man. It started in the 900 block of kenyon avenue wednesday night around 630. Lashawnda gatewood is charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon and going armed with intent. She allegedly fired at a car with the other woman inside though no one was hurt and no property damaged. Gatewood is in the polk county jail on a 15 thousand dollar bond. She booked an expensive trip to europe a few years out. Sharon was committed europe, that i had put together on my bucket list. I needed her to help me achieve it. The uihcs dr. Alexandra thomas came through. Sharon, was able to get to europe and take her trip, and since has even gone to australia. Prolonged success like sharons is what prompted dr. Thomas to take a closer look at survival rates in the first place. Dr. Alexandra thomas uihc were seeing more and more stories like that. We wanted to ask, what does this look like broadly in the united states. Dr. Thomas said the data study suggested why some woman like sharon may be living longer, primary tumor removal. In the past, it was ignored to give patients as much quality of life as possible, but the Research Suggests if removed it could lengthen lives. The reasons why a numerous, but dr. Thomas says its pointing researchers in the right direction. We need to revisit and thats what we put in our conclusions, we need to revisit that. For sharon, the future looks brighter than ever.
