You see of what was happening . Yeah, thats the thing. Becausthey started downstairs, obviously because, you know, came iwith they ran a car into the entrance, im not sure, they started shooting downstairs so i didnt see i didnt see the people shooting. I didnt see the, you know, the kalashnikovs gives off, i suppose. I dont know. All i heard was a shooting but it was like continuous shooting it was like bang, bang, bang. How long did it go on . It went on for awhile. They were just shooting. They just didnt stop. Obviously, you know, they just wanted to killll as manyeople as possible. It must have been so horrifying. It was yeah, its horrible. I was very chilled last night. I mean, i had loads of alcohol. Im a bit less chilled today. I feel i swoek up this morning feeling, yeah, my you know, i felt i was yeah, i feel quite horrible. E. I dont know. Im trying to keep it all together because i think i wont stop so im trying to maintain a cool attitude but i feel very distressed because i knew people there, some of the people i knew apparently somebody got shot, not people i know personally but people of people who know i mean, just various acquaintances. Its just sad that this would happen in a place where people come together to listen to good music, you know, its just its depressing. And whats it like in paris this morning . I havent been out yet. Im going to go out later because i want to join my family in burgundy so i should be getting a train hopefully, being. Well see, but i havent been out yet so i dont know paris. I think people aretaying i imagine so. Your time. Thank you. So much horror to absorb right there. Theyre just faced with such a devastating reality today, george. A terrifying night for the city of paris. This morning, theyre waking up in shock and people are watching all over the world. We spoke with several other survivors besides ginny who witnessed that carnage. We were walking ande heard a handful of gunshots. We heard a bunch of gunshots. Maybe eight to ten. Then there was kind of a pause and there were a few more. And police crouched behind like the doorways and trees. I dont think anybody really understood what was going on. You c could heathe gunshots again and again, and we waited for the terrorists to reload again their weapons. We turn around and ran for our lives. There was lines of ambulances and ambulances running by. Somebody saw a body lying in the street. I saw a couple of people wounded. I saw this one girl with a wound in her thigh. So, everybody at that point lying on the floor to escape the bullets. And we just stood there in silence. I pray for the victims anfor the families. Most of them died meters away fr me. Some of them on me. So i pray for them. Somber words there and abs terry moran is on the streets there. Theye telling people to stay indoor, correc reporter that is true, paula and, in fact, a word that comes to mind here in paris is a word you never associate with this city, subdued. Traffific is like many p peopleave stayed inside. It seems. Those who are out are speaking in quiet tones and even it see not runni and husing around. This is a city as you have heard in shock and here on what on any given is one of the brightest and liveliest of the streets of paris there are pools of blood, dried blood on this street and the memorials have already begun. In the middle of all this, parisians nevertheless have a sense this is a grim expectation that has been fulfilled. The attacks on Charlie Hebdo and elsewhere earlier this year set this city on edge waiting for the next blow to fall. It has in the mostt horrible fashion. And yet in the middle of all of it, they are pulling together. There was that Movement Last night online to open the doors, your own doors of your homes to people who needed to stay who couldnt get across town given the chaos here and even here on this street. A little bit earlier a man brought out a piano and started playing just to try to calm the rves and the situation, bring a note of beauty and peace to this scene of carnage, george. Okay, terry, thanks very much. As you said second major attack in the last ten month, want to bring in our chief Global Affairs correspondent martha raddatz. We heard the french president this morning blame isis, declare war. Reporter he did. He said this was an act of war and when faced with war, the country must take appropriate decisions. It was a reminder when bush said we will have a global war on terror shortly after 9 11 so you have to wonder what the approach of the french will be. Will they approach this militarily or from a Law Enforcement angle . Right now the french had been condting air strikes in syria, but, frankly not very many of them. Will they do more . Will the u. Do more . The response is what we are truly watching today. T french president seemed to reach a conclusion this was directed and prepared overseas. Yeah, he made that 125i789 too as well, planned from outside with outside complicity which an investigation will establish. So, who planned this . Are they in syria . Are they in iraq . We have al baghdadi in iraq in mosul that city he has held well over a year and falluja there, as well, so there are definitely heads of isis but whether they were involved in this, we just dont know. We have eight individuals, sort of a pack of lone wolves perhaps or there was some sort of command and control. Someone from outside and the french clearly think that at this point or i dont think the president would have saiddthis. At its somehow outside is somehow coordinating and telling those men to do what they did. What we do know, martha, isis has been gaining strength, strongholds in syria, strongholds in iraq. You were recently in afghanistan. Isis gaping strength there, as well. Huge ealation across the region and beyond in afghanistan, the commander there told me isis has become a real problem there. Theyve seen them pop up aroundd the country, whether theyre just inspired, whether ty want to be part of that hideous team of isis and think theyre winners, thats a question theyre asking themself, as well. But iraq, as well. January of 2014 and the ambassador there then was so concerned about isis and six months later they moved in and they took the city of mosul and still hold that today. Thanks very much. Lets go to the whihite house, jon karl is there and, jon karl, we saw the president come out shortly after the attacks and say we would do whatever it takes to help our oldest ally. Reporter absolutely and all of the although the president wouldnt say who was responsible, even today the United States, white hououse not ready to say they believe it was isis but clearly believe it was a terrorist attack and you heard from the president , a strong statement of solidarity with the french people. This is an attack not just on terrorists, its an attack not just on the people of france, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. Those who think that they can terrorize the people of france for are wrong. And after that statement, jon, the president was able to seek with the president president hollande and now the president heading overseas to deal with this issue of isis. Reporter thats right. First stop on that trip will be turkey where he is meeting at the g20 with other eopean leaders. President hollande was supposed to be there. That meeting will go on withoutut president hollande but the topic, number one topic was how to deal with t battle against isis and in the statement from the psident and in what we are hearing from Administration Officials since that statement, you hear resolve to help the french not just with the investigation and the aftermath of this attack but clearly the implication here is that the United States will help in going after whoever w responsible for this attack. Okay, jon karl, thanks verery ch. So many folks here at home egg, security is being ramped up especially at sports arenas and stadiums. Lots of College Football games will be played across the will be filled and dan is in times square with that part of the story. Hi dan. Reporter paula and george, gogood morni to both of you. Cities across the country are boosting security in the wake of that horror over in paris including this city, americas lalargest metropolis. A place that knows terrorism all too well, new york city. Here in new york, the nypd depling extra personnel and its counterterrorism unit. Critical Response Teams ready in the citys most visible targets. Not only will you see an increased uniformed presence with Police Officers with heavy weapons, theres also we work with our federal partners, the fband the joint Terrorism Task force. Reporter with one of the targets in paris bng a packed stadium, sporting venues across america will be enhancing security today. In lis angeles, the famous rose bowl increasing its staffing and asking fans to leave their bags at home. The a and nhl putting its teams on high alert. But the nfl saying it actually wont be changing protocols as sundays games approach. Ththe leaguepokesman saying, security at our games is always at a heightened state of alert adding all nfl stadiums are already equipped with metal detectors. You cant vw it as a nuisance. This is the world we live in now and if you have to take precautions, if you have to go through screening, thats just part of the prprocess. Reporter with the attackers in paris hitting so many socalled soft targe like a restaurant and concert h hall, the nypd and fbi will be working to keep popular areas around this city safe. You caexpect heightened security at Tourist Attractions and on public tranansit. The tragic events in paris we established a counterterrorism overlay. What that is, its heavy Weapons Service officers. They go to highprofile and sensitive locations throughout the city. Reporter it is important to note, very important to note that the department of homomeland security is urging americans not to panic. Issuing a statement in which they say, we know of no specific or Credible Threats of an attack on the u. S. Holand of the type that occurred in paris. Paula, over to you. Very important note, dan, thank you. Authorities in the u. S. Are closely monitoring the situation in paris. Abcs seor justice correspondent Pierre Thomas is in washington. D, pierre, here in the u. S. , weve been just as active in tracking down potential terror attack, havent we . Reporter yes, paula, the f has dozens o of investigations under way in all 50 states. Many surround suspected isis sympathizers and found a specific pool theyve reached through social media. In thehe lastear alone more than 70 americans have been arrested for somehow trying to support isis, some accused of trying to in isis, others arrested for plotting attacks here at home. Momost are young. Most are men. But there have been some women and even teenagers have been arrested too, paula. In terms of different shakeniateing style is there a between here and in paris . Theyve been aggressive in monitoring radical websites and social media. One tactic not often utilized in europe stings where fbi agents pose as terrorists and officials have been extremely aggressive by stopping americans from going to syria in the first place. Pierre has been repororting for months they are accepting out trying to recruit 90,000 messages on social media every singlele day. Pore from paris ahead but a quick check of the weather from ron. People coming out of that theater, the bataclan theatre where there had been a hostage situation. E of six sites attacked in the heart of the french capital. And this is that explosion at the soccer stadium. You can hear it. At least 127 people killed. Were hearing that hundreds more wounded in the second major tv attack inside paris this year. Isis has claimed responsibility. This morning were learning that a syrian passport was found on one of the eight terrorists and, george, this is the third major attack isis has claimed responsibility for in just the last couple of weeks. And the french president hollande this morning declaring war on isis as paula said, im Geor Stephanopoulos here with paula faris for a special edition of good morning america. Paris underer attack and, paula, this is an entire country right now in a state of emergency. Terrifying images all across and abcs matt gutman is on the scene of one of those attacks in paris. Good morning, matt. Paula. We have breaking news right now. We are learnrning amerins were in fact injured and at least one of these attack were not sure where, it could possibly be in that theater behd me that was packed with up to 1500 people when the terrorists stormed itit, that was part of a group of eight suicide attackers essentially wearing suicide vets, armed with ak47s and grenades attacking six separate locations in a perfectly coordinated attack. E was near the stadium of france, the other was in a very, very busy restaururant district attacking people just having dinner and, of course, the oer was right here at that theater where the band eagles of death metal was having a concert. People taken hostage there. At least 80 dead in that site right behind me and what a horrrrific tng it must have been, there are still dried blood in the streets around memorials here, a makeshift hospital was set up right behind me and hundreds and dozens of people were lowered down from the second floor. Now, french a authoriti are still trying to find those responsible saying that there are likely accomplices out there. Somehow they have mobilized 1500 additional troops fanningut across this city and the country and for the first time in years here in france, we are told that curfews might actually be happening. French p people a told to stay off the streets as much as possible right now. George. Okay, matt, thanks very much. Lets bring in brian ross and, brian, we just heard matt say the search for accomplices right now, the French Police believe they got all eight attackers but it could havbeen a huge network. Absolutely and they believe it was planned from the outside that was carried inside france with people who are likely french. Thats some conclusion already reachched by preside hollande. He said it was planned from the outside. It is isis and hes declaring war. Exactly squarely fingering isis as responsible and isis in the last few hours issued statements of responsibility in arabic, in french, in russian and in english, their social media propaganda going full team. In this case they havepecifics and say were part of the operation. They identified eight brothers and they talk about the targets theyey chose, the game, the soccer game because it was their enemy, france and germany and the r rock concert, they called that a party of perversity and sayhis is only the beginning of the storm. Its not even theeginning as paula just said. This is now the third attack in just the last couple of week. Thats right. The alleged bombing of the russian jetliner in egypt, the bombing in beirutt and now this in each case isis has claimed responsibility. Okay brian rossss, hanks very much. We want to go now to an eyewitness who is on the scene near the bataclan theatre. And were now joined by paris about imene ahmed who was an eyewitness. Eyemene, thank you for joining us. You were near the stadium. What exactly did you see. People were running everywhere, running away and they were like, okay, we need to move. We need to hide. I justt tak the hand of my mom in the kitchen behind the wall just everywhere just hiding. Did you see the shooters . Everyone was just afraid and crying. No, i havent seen them. I was just afraid and running away with everyone. We just heard the shooting but we were close enough to hear the shooting and the bombing. How long did the shooting andnd beming go on . What exactly did you hear . We heard the bombing for the first time, it was like 30 seconds, the second time it was probably ten minutes. And we were just waiting and hearing the shooting and everyone were just screaming everywhere and crying and people re just like, okay, were going to die, we were going to die. It was like, okay, dont worry, we are not going to die today. The attack is in the bataclan. We are not there. Dont worry, everything is going to be okay and we were just waiting and the police came. They were knocking on the windows and saying, just stay on the floor, stay on the floor, dont move. Dont move then three bops explode and this is the terrorist that killed himself like that and the wallsls were justhaking. We were like, okay, were going to die with these walls seriously and we were just waiting till the end. This bar was right next door to the bataclan concert hall where the suicide bombers were holdinthe hostages, so how long were you under that table as you waited for the police to go in . We were in the bar the place came very, very quick. It was very fast so i stayed in the bar from 9 40 p. M. Till 30 a. M. So like nine hours inin the bar my goodness. That must have been the most terrifying moments of your life, imene. Yeah, that was very scary, very long. We were just trying to help the people, giving them our phones if they needed to call their family, whatever they want, we give it to them. We help theeople, just help them and whatever happened its okay. Dont worry, we are going to be fine and they were afraid. They were injured. They were all bleeding everywhere. That was really awful, seriously. That was scary. We want to bring in abc news consultant Matthew Olson former head of the National First and foremost is this something new isis is doing . We keep hearingng this is the third attack that theyve claimed responsibility for in just the last couple of weeks. It seems there going global. Thi does pear, paula, to be a significant escalation of isis capability and reach. We havent seen them really carry out an attack of this degree of coordination and apparent sophistication as far from their home base in syria and iraq as they have here now in paris, if, in fact, they were responsible for this so this is an escalation of their capability. Were trying to formulate a picture, as well, of who these shooters were. Were hearinghere was a syrian passport found near one of them but what does it say that witnesses are claiming that these shooters were speaking french . Well, there is a mix here so you have the possibility that they were directed from operatives inside syria and iraq but it appears quite likely that individuals radicalized french were obviously carrying out the attacks themselves and this is really the scenario that weve been so concerned about for a number of years because of the number of foreign fighters, thousands from wesrn europe going to syria, many of them fighting with isis and returning to their home countries in a position to carry out attacks just like this. Nightmare scenario, matthew . Absolutely and itshe one that gives u. S. Counterterrorism officials the most concern, as well, the possibility that individuals could actually come back to this country and carry out a similar type of attackk here. Joining us. Which is why u. S. Officials have tried so hard to block people from going to syria in the first place. Much more from paris coming up. Right now to rob with the weather. So much concern in pis across france right now, a state of emergency, 1500 soldiers have been put the streets to protect additional sites and moments ago i spoke with the deputy mayor of paris, patrick klugman. We are joined now by the deputy mayor of paris, trick klugman, mayor klugman, our hearts are with you this morning. What can you tell us about the scene inaris right now . Thank you. Well, the situation is really very weird, i would say, very sange, very unusual. We are facing unprecedented events in paris. We have the state of emergency declared, which is the first me since the algier gentleman algeria war in the early 60s,s, all schools are closed. All games, flea markets, concerts, all are closed. So its like a mourning morning i would say. The city is a bit stopped and we are under shock. The police have said that eight attackers have been killed. Are you confent all the attackers are killed, and what accomplices . We are not totally focused at the moment on the inquiry on the accomplices, on the person responsible. As you know, of course, isis claimed for the terror attacks, but we dont know morere about w are the actorswho are the criminals, because we are really counting and naming the dead persons and the wounded persons in paris. I would like to add also that this morning we had emergency meetining in par with all the persons responsible, the deputy mayor, t the distrt mayorset cetera, and mike bloomberg, foformer may of new york was hereith us this morning, and it was a huge sign of support for us to see physically that america is standing with us, and, of course, we know it, and we heard president obama yesterday, but its great sign of solidarity and its so important at the present moment. Mr. Mayor, thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you. The president so strong yesterday talking about standing with our oldest ally. But also, you knowow,ts so frightening because how are you supposed to fight this enemy, at least for the shooters in that concert hall theyre all wearing suicide vests. I spoke with the psident about isis and hes already drawing fire from the candidates running for the white hse in 2016 fofor these comments. And thatts the sategy youve been following but isis is gaining strength, arent th . I dont think theyre gaining strength. What is true is from the start our goal has been first to contain and we have contained them. What we have not yet been able to do is completely decapitate their command and control structures. Weve made some progress in trying to ruce the flow of foreign fighters. Gege, republicans are already seizing on the words when he said that we have contained isis. This is going to be a phrase if this turns out that, in fact, isis was responsible for these attacks as the president of france has said, if that turns out to be the case, those will be words the president will likely regret having said. Its not the first time that he has said something about isis that has come back to haunt him, of course, it wasnt all that long ago he called isis the jv teamam, that is something clearly the president wishes he had not said. But its not the only line of attack from the republicans. Theyre pointing to the president s plan to allow an additional 10,000 Syrian Refugees to come into the United States. A number of the republican president ial candidates are saying that should be stopped. Heres what ted cruz tweeted not lolong o. He said, we need to immediately declare a halt to any plans to bring refugeess that may have been infiltrated by isis. On the democratic side a debate is seduled for tonight.
