Two weweeks ago e hollywood presbyterian hospitals computer systemwere infected with a virus known as ransomware. It locks access and shuts down internal communication. More than a million americann men take the hormones and while the study shows some significant benefits it also highlights some potential risks. Lets go through benefits first. As men age their testosterone levels normally go down and millions of men are taking this for all kinds of conditions but not a lot of signs to show it works in 2003 the institute of medicine called for studies. This is the first of seven studies being done so this one was in men who were 65 years and older and had at least two measured levels that were low and symptoms including decreased sexual function and physical fitness, depression, fatigue. Half of them got the drug. Half got placebo. What they found over the course of a year was moderate improvement in sexual function, slight improvement in physical fitness. A little improvement in mood and no change in terms of fatigue. None at all but a lot a large number, Something Like 50,000 enrolled but most didnt qualify. 24 is i think the most important thing here. 50,000 men were having symptoms and wanted to get in this study. Only 15 of them when they measured truly had low levels of testosterone. Because the others had medical conditions that said no so thats a lot of people who think they have the problemho truly dont. Its got to be Something Else going on. Probably is. There are a lot of things that go on betweenen men and women as they a and its not all related to testosterone. Meanwhile, what do we learn about the risks. There have been other studies that have raised concerns about heart attatack, stroke, possible prostate cancer. This study only went on for a year so its not able to answer the question. If it works is it safe . We need longer studies. How should men think about this. You have to first say if youre having these symptoms is my testosterone really low s no one should take it unless theyve had at least two levels that are really low. If youre over , think about it but get that measurement first.
