And as the numbers go up for cruz the attacks he is facing from competitors are going up as trump to make good on his threats. Joining us is Shannon Owens green, jesse owens great niece and is also a writer for the Orlando Sentinel and you have probably seen her before. Great to see you. Good to see you, too. Amy thanks for coming in this morning. When you first heard they were going to do this movie, about your very famous great uncle, what were your thoughts . I saw some articles years ago, i think five years ago, i heard, there was a movie coming out and i was like, wow, that is cool if they are making a movie about it. And it is just surreal and is really kind of exciting. I think his daughters have done a fantastic job, really preserving the legacy because it is such an important story for todays audience i think to know. And it was so many years ago and a lot of the Younger Generation through. Amy especially when he came home from the olympics and i i didnt realize he died when he was 66. It was 1980 when he died and it was before you were born, right. Amy but your father was very close with him, thats right. That was his uncle and they had a very close relationship and i rob my sister who is 8 years older than me used to spend her summers there in arizona. Tucson and it is like i said, it is surreal, and to watch the movie and looking at his parents and, those are my great grandparents and one of the photos at the end of the movie, is of the house and i thought, those are photos of our house. And growing up we didnt talk about it you a lot. My dad never played it up. Just another family member. Amy a very Famous Family member. And i never thought about it until i saw the movie and i thought, wow there is something to be proud of. You know . Amy huge. Yeah, it is. Columbus and you watched the movie. With some of this actors from movie and relatives, which is cool, a Family Reunion . Yes. I met gloria, his oldest daughter, met her for the first time and never met her before, there is such an age gap between them and us and it was cool to see them again and, you know, talk to them and, the q and a that day on ohio state campus, and obviously that is where he went to school and a lot of students got a chance to participate and get a chance to meet with the stars of the movie and really hear the story. It was a great experience. Amy i want to show some of the pictures shannon sent us, pictures we were able to put together so you at home could see. These are priceless photos from your family. And heres one of them, and tell me about this photo. Well, that is my grandmother, pearline, the youngest child, jesses baby sister. They were very close and that is my grandfather, haywood, and the baby. I love it. Well scroll through the other pictures, and this is a photo in yes. That photo used to hang in our house, that is my dad, and, obviously, that is him gazing at his uncle, which is staged which he never actually did amy a great one. Yeah, that is my dad in the center, looking at the basketball and that is jesse. Which is, you know, it is interesting, the story of basketball in our family, because, my dad played basketball at the university of iowa, and he eventually transferred to the university of akron and jesse came twot i read he was an avid golfer and loved to golf in his retirement years. You cant live in arizona and not play golf. One of the best places for golf. Amy i love that picture. Can we show that one . Pop it back up for you. In the meantime, shannon, tell me about what you thought of the movie. Did you love it . I really did. I mean, it was what was great was, it was a heavy moment in history and they did a great job infusing humor and really showing his personality. And, just the human side of him. You have to remember he was 22 years old when all of this happened and had a wife and had a daughter. That was a lot on him as a 22yearold to carry the pressure of the world, you know, at one point, they considered not going to the olympics and there were protests about going and the n. A. A. C. P. Leadership didnt want him to go, either, an interesting piece they highlighted in the movie, showing how big of a decision it was for him to even go to the olympics and just all of the pressure that he was under, performing in that moment, so. Amy how he was treated when he came back. I think a lot of people dont realize, he came back a National Hero but also came back a second class citizen in many ways . I loved how they ended the movie. Because they ended the movie with him coming back and there was a dinner thrown for him and the front door of the hotel. You know, his coach could but he couldnt and i was glad they talked about that, because, even though he made all the great aom mrichlts in berlin he didnt get an invite from the white house. Never got a telegram from fdr. You talk about, you know, hitler and his regime but the other part of the story is about what happened when he came back and how he was treated as a second class citizen in america. I was really glad they highlighted that in the movie. Amy wow. Amazing and the movie comes out tomorrow, it is called race. The trailer looks awesome, shannon got a preview and saw the whole thing. Thank you very much for sharing your story with us this morning. It was an honor. 8 18 right now, lets check in with jayme. Jayme good stuff, thanks for coming in. Cool lets talk about the numbers here behind me, they are cool as well. And, you can see that we have got ample sunshine, just another blockbuster of a day. I almost said monday, im setting myself back here. Thursday. Another great day ahead. Breezy, dry, good looking in the Temperature Department with 71 by 2 00 and theres the wind and may just over 25 at times, and could get a little windy into the afternoon, but no biggie, right . Enjoy the temps, around 68, beautiful on the golf course today, 73, fantastic for us as we head toward the afternoon, a again good looking skies, a few clouds and cool temps overnight, no matter where you are, trackside, daytona, amped up and ramped up for the big race sunday or hanging out in sanford or longwood or orlando, were, looking good.
