They clean up tonight after part of a tree topless on a home with families inside. Neighbors say they saw it coming. It was just a matter of time. Six people hit by an accidental shotgun blast at a four of the people are children. It happened early this afternoon at a place called the ocala shooting range. Its an unsupervised range in the middle of the Ocala National forest. Emergency crews took the people who were hit to ocala Regional Medical center. David williams is live at the Sheriffs Office. How did all this happen . Reporter the Sheriffs Office is calling this an accident. Those people were hurt by ricochet that bounced up off a concrete slab at that unmanned shooting range. It happened this afternoon at the old forest road 88 shooting range, about 10 miles deep inside the forest. Deputies tell us the person was in the proper location, loading a Double Barrel antique shotgun when he was closing the shotgun, it accidentally went off into the ground. That shotgun ammo hit a concrete surface and ricocheted, hitting five of six people who were there. Several people who who were hurt are related. The family is from leesburg. Everyone was taken to the ocala Regional Medical center. Here is what investigators said about guns in general and the shooting. This was an accident, but always point a weapon in a safe direction. In this incident, it was, it was pointed to the ground, of course, we had concrete that caused a ricochet. But weapons are something we need to be very responsible with and treat with utmost respect at all times when handling them. The lieutenant says this looks like it was an accident and there was no criminal intent, so there is no criminal investigation going on. Again, they believe this was just an accident. Reporting live in ocala, David Williams, fox 35 news. In orlando one family dealing with the aftermath of a close call with a giant tree tonight. Kirstin an old oak tree, and when it split in half, part of it fell on their house. Kate burgess shows you the damage. Reporter none of the people that live in this multifamily house were hurt when that tree fell but it did take most of the day to clear, and you can see why. Take a look at the size of this massive thing. Crews had to use a crane to remove the trunk from the roof and then went at it with chainsaws, demolishing that trunk piece by piece. Its hard work, removing thousands of pounds of fallen oak. But it has to be done after this massive oak tree cracked in half and fell across this court near downtown orlando, damaging part house. It was like a bomb. At the end it was like a bomb going off. Josh holmes and aj burnet was outside when the tree came down at about 9 30 friday night. Holmes says he narrowly avoided branches. I started running this way, the whole thing came down, took through the roof over there. Just destroyed everything at while the cleanup continues, neighbors say this old rotting tree was an accident waiting to happen. We all predicted it. We noticed earlier that it used to be leaning on a telephone pole. Then they cut that off. They moved it. They cut that off and then that shifted off the whole balance of everything, and then it was just a matter of time. A colony of bees was also ousted when that tree fell and were told many of them flew into this attic right here. Deputies say they think he might be connected to another robbery at a pizza place. He inside glass her county jail. A robbery at a burger king and a dominos. He is accused of implying he had a weapon, forcing a worker against an ice machine, then demanding cash from the safe. Turns out, he works for burger king. Deputies say he is officially a person of interest in the Dominos Pizza robbery, too. Kirstin two men are dead after a crash in Merritt Island this morning. They were just 24 years old. They died when the car they were in lost control and hit a utility pole. The car then rolled into a ditch filled with water before slamming against a driveway culvert. Heres what one man who lives in the area told us. A lot of people speed up and down this street. I wish they would put speed bumps or do something. Today this shows you that or last night just shows you what happens. Just a lot of people, a lot of turns. Dow chemicals, dogs, kids, horses, golf carts. Its crazy that every day there are that many people speeding. Orange county deputies say the shooting death of her boyfriend. He died last night around 8 30. It happened on apopkas 13th 13th street. Orange county deputies say the girlfriend, williams, shot him. Deputies are not telling us the circumstances of the shooting but they say williams is cooperating and that she is not under arrest. Kirstin an elderly man is behind bars and a 100,000 bond after investigators say he shot and killed his 88yearold girlfriend in what theyre calling a case of murder and attempted suicide. 89yearold carl lang went before a judge, claiming his girlfriends death was part of a suicide packet he made with her. He said he shot her and was planning to turn the gun on himself but authorities were able to stop him after they were called to the house for wellbeing check. The couple had been dating for almost 25 years. Lang is facing a seconddegree murder charge. A Hillsborough County deputy is being remembered by Deputy John Kotfila died when a wrong way driver slammed into him early this morning. Reporter Hillsborough CountyDeputy John Kotfila juniors smile couldnt get much larger. Hes pictured here with his father and brother. Bonded by blood and by their careers. But now their bond has been split. This is a loss not only to the county Sheriffs Office but to all the Law Enforcement men and women who are trying to do their job and get home alive. The deputy was killed by a wrong way driver, just before 3 00 saturday morning. He was driving east along the upper selmon expressway deck when deputies say he was hit headon. Both were killed. Thats probably the worst part of the job. We go through a lot. But when its one of your own, its very hard. The deputy had just left tampa general hospital. He had finished a traffic crash investigation and was going back to his zone. The tragic loss sent an emotional shock wave through the Law Enforcement field. The men and women are out there, trying to protect everybody, and these guys are very concerned about the drivers at night. In fact, this deputy had hoped to become a traffic homicide investigator at some point in his career. Investigators are now trying to figure out why macbeth was going the wrong way. They believe he got on the expressway at town center boulevard. That part of the highway is made up of reversible express lanes. Neighbors tell us he was supposed to be going out of town to celebrate a birthday up north. They arent sure why he was in the brandon area that early, but one thing is for certain. When something happens, it draws you very close together. The extended family the deputy was part of is hurting as they question why this has to happen. It drives it home because it could have been his car, could have been anyone elses car. The crash is still under investigation. Investigators are waiting for macbeth. Avalon middle school was almost double capacity with enrollment, so this school relieves that. We get them down to normal numbers. Reporter after that deadly plane crash, the plane is still sitting right here in this field, as investigators search for clues. There are more questions than answers this evening after this deadly plane crash. At this time we do not know where the plane took off from, nor do we know what their destination was. Investigators say a small single engine personal size plane crashed into this vacant field today the plane crashed near the 2,000 block of crest ridge drive in clermont, near south lake hospital. Clermont police and other First Responders are piecing together clues to figure out what caused the plane to crash, leading to two deaths. It is in close proximity to residences, but in this situation we were very fortunate, it didnt explode, there were no explosion or fire or anything of that nature. The faa and ntsb were notified. Were told they will be taking over the investigation. Reporting in clermont, David Williams, fox 35 news. Tonight a 26yearold man is accused of running down sled dogs with a snowmobile. One of the dogs died, three others hurt, as they competed in alaskas famous difficult duty a rod race. The dogs were part of two different teams. The man is accused of running down the dogs as they ran in the race early this morning. People for the ethical treatment of animals released a statement late today saying in part, peta is calling on the race to show it has some modicum of consideration by calling off the rest of this years race and to forever stop running dogs to death. As of tonight, though, the race is still on. Kirstin marco rubio will continue his run for the white house here in Central Florida tomorrow. Hell rally voters in the villages at 3 00 p. Kirstin it happened early this morning, in the eastbound lanes near maitland boulevard. Fox 35s gina benitez shows us dramatic picture of the car that burst into flames. Reporter a little after 6 30, Maitland Police got a call about this, car on fire in the middle of i4. Emergency crews rushed to the area, quickly closing lanes and working to get to the vehicle. Once they did, First Responders realized there was a person we were doing a traffic home side investigation at this time where there was one fatality, the only occupant of the vehicle. Police say the car slammed into this concrete pole right before it burst into flames. The impact was so severe with the concrete pole that we were just not able to identify what type of vehicle, anything like that. Traffic was at a crawl for hours, with only one lane able to get by. Police also shut down the maitland exits to safely conduct their investigation. At this point its unclear what caused that driver to lose control, and police say it could be a while before they know for sure. It will take weeks before theres a final investigative report done, but were just now. Fox 35 news. Kirstin to a news alert, a bicyclist hit and killed by a speeding driver who took off, hasnt been found. Florida Highway Patrol says late last night the driver of a nissan all tim a went through the intersection of colonial and lbt, hitting a man on a bike, killing him, and then took off. The car was found but no sign of the actual driver. Young voters are a big part of this years election on tuesday. 17yearolds will be able to vote in the key states of ohio. Lawmakers are making it legal for 17yearolds to vote in the primary. Good news a lot of people are saying, for the Bernie Sanders camp but others are crying foul. Its an interesting twist, but younger voters, you recall Bernie Sanders was in town thursday, and the average age of that rally was well below 30. It was remarkable. It is good to see the younger people get involved. You always say be careful with the registration angle, make sure everything is still proper and secure and done in accordance with the law, but the citys young people involved with a candidate like Bernie Sanders, who is four or five times older than they are, it really is exciting stuff. Is this make it or break it for trump and how so . Not for trump. But it is for john kasich and marco rubio. If they both lose their states, theyll probably drop out within 48 hours. California has a bill that would ask voters to abolish the process of changing clocks twice a year. Tom did you know there are some water falls hidden in our mostly flat geography . Its time to take you to one of Central Floridas most beautiful hidden gems. Patricia loves coming to this patch of lake county woods. It sits just east of mount dora. Shes with lake county Water Authority, which owns the preserve. It is gorgeous and quiet. Very peaceful. Almost zen quality. Much of that is created by this, a little waterfall no more than four or five feet tall. Because this is not. But its our little waterfall and and unique to lake county. But heres the thing about this gorgeous little spot in the woods. You may come in a month or so, and that beautiful little waterfall and the pool below and the creek beyond that will be completely gone. Dry. Its only here when lake county gets a bunch of rainfall in a short amount of time. A quarterinch every two weeks probably wouldnt do it. You have to get a consistent inch type of rainfall event. Its rare. The creek runs off into a sinkhole. Maybe about 100, 150 feet deep. A very old sinkhole. We think it could be hundreds of years, and maybe even thousands of years. Geologists think the water drops deep into the earth. That its going even below the local wells, perhaps 800, 1,000 feet into the florida aquifer. The waterfall to creek to sinkhole system has been around a long time. Not a lot of people know about it because its so well hidden. But when the fall shows up, the Water Authority does try to open up the preserve for the public, nature events to find excuses to oversee. This is my job. This is so wonderful. They had the gates open last weekend. Yes, 600 people showed up to see it. But unfortunately, they probably wont have it open again before it dries up, and so youre going to need to keep an eye on the lake county Water Authoritys website, theyll let you know when we have enough rain again to open it back up.
