Well be back right after the break with more on our black History Month celebration and well go to Medgar Evers College to show you the amazing opportunities theyre giving young africanamerican students. The College President will join me live next here on fox 5. Ernie welcome back to our feature story. We continue our week long celebration of black History Month with a focus on education. Its an area historically filled with roadblocks and young africanamerican students are often missing out on opportunities. But as Stacey Delikat shows us at Medgar Evers College in brooklyn, the openings are seemingly endless. Check it out. Reporter at Medgar Evers College, 6700 students are working hard to get their degrees. The school, established in 1970, is part of the City University of new york, but has a very unique identity. Medgar evers is next to the field. Thats where Jackie Robinson 1947. Reporter Richard Greene has taught history here for 24 hours. Whatever your major is, theres some history, some black history in this moment. Reporter the school is named for civil rights activist medgar evers who organized Voter Registration efforts and fought to end the segregation of schools. He was assassinated in 1963. Our mission is to make sure that his ideals and ideas go on and thats what we do every day. Reporter we sat down with students who told us evers legacy has influenced their education. My main reason why im here is because of the significance. Mr. Medgar evers. He gave us a chance to vote, and that was very important to me. We have people of all backgrounds, various races and cultures as well. When we come together, its one family. I think that precisely is what there are opportunities here. Once you tap into it, it can take you places. Reporter the College Offers associate and baccalaureate degrees and provides students support beyond academics through programs like the center for law and justice and the empowerment center. We try to teach our men here to understand that they have purpose. Reporter while the colleges mission is to honor the history of civil rights, its also about creating the leaders of the future. Students may not have gotten a College Education elsewhere. We give them that opportunity to be able to obtain a College Education through the programming and through the academics. Theres a medgar evers quote that you can kill the man, but not the idea. And that itself translates into creating the new students. Measures of the colleges success. Each year enrollment goes up and so does the graduation rate. This year, 1,500 students are expected to complete their degrees this spring. In brooklyn, im Stacey Delikat. Ernie, back to you. Ernie all right. Thank you very much. Joining us right now is dr. Rudy crew, the president of Medgar Evers College. So good to have you here. Thank you. Ernie were doing quite an interesting celebration all this week. Were focusing on education. You must be proud. I mean, the college has such an outstanding reputation. You have to be proud of the faculty, the staff and the student body. Well, you know, you said it right. This is a place that has a legacy of pride and against many obstacles and things that people basically in many cases really didnt know whether or not were even possible. Yet theres a way that this college has upheld itself. It has strengthened itself over time. We have an incredibly strong and vibrant faculty. The same would be true for our student body. Nature and the character of all of central brooklyn in terms of education. Ernie it really does. One of the missions of your college is to create leaders of the future. Tell us specifically how do africanamerican students feel about those opportunities that are ahead for them . You know, i think i would characterize their feeling about their future as not just optimistic, but extraordinary ly ily gifted, that these opportunities are things that they have been seeing and wanting and pining for for some period of time. They have worked hard to get in the sort of glide path of seeing those opportunities come their way. Theyve overcome tremendous amounts of obstacles in route. So the question really becomes how do they then assume the natural position in the 21st owner of a company, as a member of a community, and they are doing that with tremendous, tremendous, tremendous joy. Ernie so many different roles. I know you work very hard to bring students and parents together. You have so many programs. I often ask about the productivity of the university. Educational systems in general. Here you are a College President , an education luminary. What can colleges do and what can we do as we celebrate black History Month to really bring that to the forefront . I mean one of the things that i think is going to be incredibly important is that people, particularly young africanamericans who are in the pipeline of coming to college, that they see the Value Proposition of going to college, that they see themselves as being able to do the work, that they are literate, that they have math skills and science skills, that they have opportunities to acquire these skills as we go through elementary, middle and high school and that theres a really begin to develop and hone their sensibilities as young men and women about career choices that theyll make. I think cuny is doing an extraordinary job with a host of programs aimed primarily at being able to do this for all students. In my college, particularly for africanamerican students, what were basically saying is we do not want anybody left behind or failing or without the prospect of ernie and youre doing a great job. Congratulations for all you do, dr. Rudy crew, Medgar Evers College. Come back and join us. We love the updates. Thank you. A reminder to join us tomorrow. Onemore day in our black History Month celebration. Well look at sports and be joined live in the studio by a former jet and giant who is now a doctor. A good interview coming up tomorrow. He said hes never seen a guy mature so much in one year. I talked to him about the great young pitching staff. Like the braves in the 90s with the guys that competed on and off the field, i asked if they have anything like that with the mets. We always have a competitive nature. Were always thinking were a team and we have one goal and were always pushing each other to get better and watching each others bullpens and before the game. Thats something thats pretty cool. Its camaraderie within ourselves. Reporter does it help that youre all power pitchers . Yeah. We all have the same game. Were all kind of different in certain aspects. Reporter so they all are power pitchers. Remember, theyre going to add zack wheeler to the mix late june, early july. This pitching staff, when you look at it, just so good and getting better. As far as the nets, they made some noise today because they hired their new general manager, sean marks. Ernie any good . Russ he was an assistant gm for a great organization, the san years. Choices.
