He joined volunteers and members of the New York National guard to help pack up food that will be handed out to families in need ahead of the holiday. Well, we know this is one of the busiest times of the year for charities. As we get ready for thanksgiving, were taking a special look now at giving back. We start with how the food drives are helping and what you might not know about donating. Jessica has more for us right now. This is a great time of the year because november, december, even past new years, people have others on their mind. Reporter food banks and pantries like st. Francis are counting on you to donate. They come and get a weeks worth of groceries. Its meant to be supplemental. And at holiday times of the year, special times of the year, we provide like turkeys and hams and all those kinds of things. Father francis says donating turkeys, stuffing and cranberry sauce is great. But think about past the holidays. Think about past new years when people are hungry and bringing social isolation. Things like cereal, mac and cheese, tuna fish, protein items, babys diapers. Or butter, so items that only require water are perfect like oatmeal, rice and beans. As you want to pull out cans and drive them over to your local food pantry, which is fine, you have to check the expiration date. Last year st. Francis food pantry had a huge food drive but threw away 50 percent of the goods because the cans were either expired or dented. If you cant use it, we cant use it. Reporter this person has been coming for two years. He comes every week to pick up a bag full of goods. Its very important. The food prices are very, very high. We cant do the work without volunteers. A lot of people want to show up around thanksgiving. Were so, so proud. But we need them on friday and every day going forward. You can during the holidays get a tribute card where you can do a card in the name of your family, your business, a loved one, any value, or your Childs School can sign up to actually do a food pantry for those who need it.
