The Southeast Pennsylvania Transit Authority in philadelphia has it did i know. Know has it done. Metro link, theyve got it done. How were they able to do it, but other major railroads have not . Reporter in a letter to the Senate Committee on commerce, science and transportation, the mta chairman said while significant progress has been made, new yorks heavily congested Commuter Rail environment has challenges. He wrote ptc was not an off the shelf product. This is a complex technology. Reporter this is the director of Government Relations for the American Public Transportation Association and skyped with us from washington, d. C. He say high costs are among the reasons. The scale of this, especially across the country, is enormous. And we want to make sure that ptc is implemented correctly. Ultimately thats the goal. Folks just need more time. Now commuter advocates like jim hope that railroads will make the 2018 deadline. This is a technological solution. Its not easy to install. I admit that. But i know its possible because other railroads have done it. Reporter the ntsb has been calling for Technology Like this for 45 years. In that time, there are 145 train accidents that the Technology May have helped to prevent and 288 lives that may have been saved. Im stacey delikat, back to you. Ernie thank you very much. Joining me live right now from washington, new jersey senator cory booker. Senator, thanks for joining me today. Thank you for having me on, especially on this important topic. Ernie it is very important. You are the Top Senate Democrat overseeing rail safety issues on a subcommittee. Critics say that congress caved by agreeing to the extension. How do you see it . Well, first of all, i wouldnt use the word caved in. I would join with the critics. Its unacceptable this had to be extended. There was a lot of time. As said in the reporting, a lot of railroads will get in on time, including the northeast corridor for amtrak. So i was very frustrated. We began negotiations. Democrats are in the minority. Many of the northeastern democrats and i joined together to try to stop the extension. The challenge was the railroads were saying that they couldnt get it done in the amount of time that was left. While many people were seeking an extension longer than three years, five years, we were able to negotiate a threeyear extension and, importantly, put more resources, congress having more resources invested in ptc and rail safety in the coming and working transportation bill. Ernie while were waiting for all of this to happen, can you tell us how safe do you think the railroads are right now . People are watching, listening. How safe are they . Clearly their Safety Record is far better than automobile transportation. So driving from new jersey to boston is a lot more dangerous than taking the train. We have an extraordinarily good Safety Record when compared to other modes, but the reality is its not safe enough. We should be doing more. For those in the new jersey, new york area, weve seen some accidents that are troublesome and likely could have been prevented by positive train control. This is no reason for panic or for people to stop using rail. I use it to go back and forth between newark and d. C. All the time. But i just want to see the obvious things we have the power to do to save human lives be implemented. This is something im going to use for my position as ranking democrat to continue to be the person thats putting the pressure on for more and more accountability in the implementation of the technology technology. Ernie when its in effect, do you feel it will work . Are you reassured by this . Again, am i confident . Yes. I live in a world where ive learned from being in government that you dont just take peoples word for it. You trust and verify. We want to make sure the system is implemented and implemented properly so it does what we need it to do that in times of crisis, that it can act in a way thats going to save lives. Ernie senator, thank you very much for staying on top of this story. We want to have you come back and give us updates. A lot of time between now and 2018. I know youll have stories to share. You can look to the south around see showers in southern virginia. You see the trajectory. Theyre moving northward. That trend will continue. While we may see a little sun in the morning, more of the clouds will win out as the day goes along as High Pressure slides offshore and allows the southerly airflow to move in. Youll see how that transposes on the futurecast. Mild weather with a southwest wind will continue. That extends into the plains states. Its here where the next cold front is moving by. Bringing in the cooler weather into the upcoming weekend. A little sun pops out in the morning. 50s out the door. Upper 40s suburbs. We should get to 65 at lunchtime. Watch the clouds come in on the futurecast with a couple of showers. As we head into tomorrow night, a fair amount of clouds. Friday, same deal. We stay mild. A couple of showers early. Note a gap in the cloud cover. If this materializes, we will certainly hit the record high of 74, maybe go past it, until the front comes through and maybe a shower in the evening. Look at this photo of construction worker waving to crowds. Parts have amazing views which you can catch. Its the land of used cars. You dont have to keep up with the joneses here. Thats good. Reporter along the avenue, youll find quaint places to grab a bite like pattys on the bay, known for its outdoor seating and amazing seafood chowder. Reporter quiet, tree lined streets are a hallmark of the neighborhood. Although it is known for its largely irish and german population, this realtor says things are starting to get more diverse. A lot of different restaurants. Before it used to be mainly italian restaurants. Now we have greek restaurants and spanish restaurants. Its really, really developing into a nice area. Reporter the main street is east treemont avenue. Thats where youll find discount stores, eateries and good and services. It is a residential Quiet Community with a view that feels way more like florida than the southeast bronx. Well, ernie, theres Something Else thats cool about the throgsneck section of the bronx. Behind me a few paces is suni maritime college, which is very interesting and, of course, the majestic throgsneck bridge. Ernie speaking of that, let me ask you something. When you see throgsneck, spelled with two gs, but the bridge is spelled with one. Why is that . You can thank the former city planner robert moses who wasnt warm and fuzzy. He decided even though it was named after a man named throggmorton, he wanted the name to fit on traffic signs. So he said 300 years of history doesnt matter. He lopped off a g. Purists still say its two gs. Ernie exactly. Were sticking with that. Ernie pattys on the bay. Im going to come and sit with you. Reporter ill tell them to save seafood chowder for you. Ernie its a real jewel. Weve got it. Thank you so much. Okay. A lot more coming up including my question about sticking to your decisions. The mets buttoned up the season with a little bit of a scare with the general manager. Sandy alderson. Serious. There was a press Conference Held at citi field today to announce the new twoyear deal we mentioned yesterday for terry collins. Following towards the end, he was talking to some writers, Sandy Alderson was, and he fainted. Ernie what happened . Russ he just apparently what the end result was, he didnt eat breakfast. It was hot in there. He fainted. Ems came. I spoke with the mets. Hes back in his office working. Ernie thats good. Glad hes all right. He was there for a good reason. Russ i think it was a very good reason. Some people might want to dispute it. Terry collins got a new twoyear deal. It was i think well deserved. I think hes done a good job. He certainly was in the big show this year, albeit didnt end ernie a lot of people didnt expect them to get to the series. Russ he made it clear the twoyear deal isnt based on just 2015. This is an expression of our appreciation and our confidence not just because of 2015, but because of the whole body of work from the time that he came on board and prior to the 2011 season through today. Ernie so a vote of confidence there. On to the next season. Russ the vote of confidence only lasts until the next season. Ernie what can you do for me now . Russ hes a good guy. Sandy made it clear, like one of the reasons hes there is because of his he used the term authenticity. Thats a good way to describe terry collins. Hes a real mans man. He doesnt throw people under buses. A solid, good guy. Ill tell you one other thing, though, when you go to terry collins, though, and ask him what needs to be done to get to that next level for next season, no two ways about it, he knows what needs to be done. Youve got to go execute. The execution side is absolutely the most important thing. As we saw, we didnt execute the way we would have liked and it cost us games. Ernie youve been impressed with him. Russ yeah. On that remark, though, failing to execute fundamentals ended up with the mets executing themselves, if you will. That was the end result. He really is an a authentic guy, like the giants tom coughlin. No excuses. Theyre not selfpromoters. Ernie straight arrows. Thank you so much.
