Experts say there is a benefit to the baby when nursing moms eat spicy foods. Alison joining us, dr. Devi. Should you eat spicy foods . I would think not. Thats the traditional thinking, you want to avoid spicy foods. Think about all the cultures, whether south asian, latin american or american. People have a mix of spicy foods. The babies tend to do okay. The newer thinking is that perhaps its okay, that you dont have to worry necessarily that the baby is going to have problems with digestion. If you think about how spice works, why people might have problems, theres something called substance p that gets released from the taste buds. Its a chemical thats involved in pain. It can cause pain and discomfort. Eating spicy foods, you run out of it. Thats why people who eat spicy foods all the time dont have problems. People who have it after a long time feel discomfort. The worstcase scenario for the baby is probably at first, if the breast milk is spicy, which i doubt because the spice doesnt necessarily get into the breast milk, but maybe they taste a little spiciness, but it fades. Alison i was going to ask. If you eat something spice y spicy, will it translate to the milk . Not necessarily. Its not necessarily connected. The same thing, even if the mom has a problem with spicy food, if she has gassy or bloating, maybe she doesnt want to give it to the baby. Steve not a good deal for the mom. Alison change it up a little. There was one study that showed maybe the baby likes it might stimulate appetite. Alison all right. Adding protein in your diet could help you sleep. Im thinking of turkey making you drowsy. Is it a tryptophan thing or is it different . Its related. There are two parts to this. The key is weight loss. The study that were looking at here, both groups lost weight. These are people that were on a diet for strictly weight loss. And another group was on a diet that was higher in protein. Anybody who loses weight tends to have improvement in their sleep. Maybe they have less heartburn or less fluctuations in sugar that could interfere with their sleep. What helps you sleep its not clear if its the tryptophan or the protein. Tryptophan is the chemical associated with protein. Theres been research in the past. In the study, they found that people got better. It might be because certain proteins have dairy proteins if you had a fatty burger, that might interfere with your sleep. Maybe its the fat, not the protein. A little bit of a you have to distinguish what is causing the benefit and whats causing the problem. Alison i would choose the fatty burger. Im not thinking yogurt. Steve i make bad decisions late at night when it comes to food. Seems like you want to protein tends to make you feel more satisfied and you sleep through the night. Makes sense. The other factor there is there are studies that show if people get overweight or have problems with sleeping, in addition to that, they lose some of their lean body mass. The protein that helps them build muscle. If the body is trying to compensate by holding on to protein, maybe in those folks it helps them sleep better. It doesnt mean everybody should be taking or using a high protein diet. For folks with problems with insomnia, might be something to look at. Steve we appreciate it. Thank you very much.
