Some of the areas you just heard talked about and i want to you take a look at the hood of the car it looks like its rain but its not. That is a sheet of ice. That is what were seeing on the roads out here. Things very slick even on 440, 540 the roads that they treat first that they put all the salt ask brine on still have some very slick spots. Roads here still very slick. The shine on the road is not water, that is not rain, that is ice especially with the temperature. Its been dropping as weve been driving around here. So any rain like kristin and alyssa were saying any rain thats falling hits the road and becomes ice. We have seen a lot of dot trucks out here salting and sanding and putting down the brine. The wake county dot says theyve put down 100,000 gallons it hasnt made a huge difference. You can see where its melted but its definitely so if you do have to be out and about this morning you do want minutes and some distance between the cars in front of you so if you do start to slip and slide you can hopefully avoid an accident. Reporting live for now im emma wright, wncn news. Our coverage continues this morning. Were going to head over to Orange County thats where we find wncns Justin Quesinberry. I know you said some of the side streets treacherous. Yeah, its really bad on the side roads that havent been treated like what we see here on the interstate and even this on ramp right here which is really just wet right now. But yeah, its a solid sheet of ice really on these back roads at least thats what i experienced in the few miles that it took me to get here to this location. You can see weve got plenty of snow on most of it fell last night. And that started left foot night and continued for a couple hours and we still have something coming down right now. It was clearly snow earlier now it seems to be more of a wintry mix so be careful out there this morning because what were seeing really depends on where you are and as you travel around you may encounter many different circumstances. So take it slow if you have to be out. The body of Supreme Court Justice Scalia is back home in the state of virginia. It arrived at the airport late sunday night. So heres our satellite radar you see the snow extending back to our west but i want to bring you into a closer look at home and its snow across the northern are portions of our viewing area. Its here in the triangle that we saw that sleet start to fall a lot earlier right around durham and chapel hill now dealing with the sleet around portions of wake county just some freezing drizzle for the majority of the areas and areas south and east of the triangle were looking at john ton county, seeing that wintry mix as well this morning. Now, the temperatures prime that anything thats falling especially on those untreated roadways is sticking. 23 in durham, 23 in louisburg, 24 in raleigh, the upper 20s around littleton, fayetteville and clinton this morning. Its not until the afternoon hours that we get above freezing. So from now until then were going to see this wintry mix. To our wncn health watch now as concerns of the zika virus continue to grow so do fears the mosquito borne illness may continue to impact people around the globe and possibly here at home. Dr. Kevin campbell is here now to answer some questions that you may have. Good morning. Good morning. What exactly is it and how is its been a virus thats been around since 1947 but only now were starting to see it. Its spread through mosquitoes primarily. So lets talk about what are the symptoms . You can see the symptoms fever, rash, joint pain, kind of like a flu like illness. About 80 percent who have it dont even have symptoms. The biggest concerns have to do with birth defects. Exactly. In this case the children born with really small heads and their brains arent developed and they have lifelong problems. Weve seen the picture theyre difficult to watch. Now, its important to know that its not been determined to be active here in North Carolina but over 50 travel related cases country. This map shows is us so you know, right now theres been no cases, theyve all been traveled related and what weve seen though is there is the possibility of sexual transmission. The virus lives in the blood stream for about two days to a week to 10 days and now it may live in sexual fluids a little bit longer than that. So there are some guidelines the cdc has issued. Lets look at the impact worldwide. You know, i think the most important thing is if you are pregnant you probably shouldnt go. If you decide you are going to go you need to cover the skin, you need to use mosquito repel plant and things of that sort and really avoid infested areas as much as you can because this is a big deal, and its potentially devastating. Okay. Thank you so much. Well continue to watch as we learn more about the zika virus. Close eye ton as well. Absolutely. Absolutely. Thank you. Good morning to you guys at home and we are are starting off with some wintry weather falling now across the triangle also across central North Carolina. So heres a live picture from our Neighborhood Network looking towards downtown raleigh, what were seeing is not a lot steadily fall but dealing with some freezing drizzle and thats causing very icy conditions on the roadways. So at 6 a. M. This morning were still snow along the virginia border communities here in the triangle were dealing with that sleet mixture especially towards durham and Orange County. You can see it showing up as purple this morning. Its now spreading a little further north of 85 and towards person, granville, still snow and areas south and east of nature but sleet continues to fall around smithfield, wilson we know its right along 95 so could cause some slick conditions. 23 in durham the upper 20s around fayetteville, clinton and pinehurst. So these temperatures being as cold as they are for as long as weve been below freezing this is whats prime for all of this to stick immediately and thats this morning. So as youre planning your day 8 a. M. Temperature 28 degrees, 30 at noon, we get above freezing shortly after lunchtime and then that transitions mainly into a cold rain. 37 our afternoon high and thats not going to happen until close to the evening drive home. So at 7 a. M. This morning snow and sleet falling for the majority of our area. Watch what happens though through the morning it looks like some of starts to break up which would be some good news because roads already continue with some sleet and freezing rain through lunchtime and then it starts to change into a cold rain as the warmer temperatures move in. 5 00 this evening still scattered showers in our forecast but most of us just dealing with a cold rain. That rain continues through 7 a. M. Tomorrow morning. Tomorrow mornings commute could be tricky just because im expecting heavy amounts of rain so we know that can cause some water to pond on the roadways. Most of it should be winding down by noon tomorrow with dryer conditions expected tomorrow afternoon. Im going to get to more on your snow and sleet accumulations in just one moment but i want to talk about how much of the different types of precipitation were going to see and for that im going to send it on over to kristin. The snow sleet and freezing rain really tricky across the area today. So what we have outside primarily right now is snow and sleet. And that sleet those those ice pellets that you hear bouncing off the roads, car and windshield. So they start warm air starting move in which melts and refreeses as ice. Its just the a melted snow flake that freezes on contact with anything it touches at the surface that is at or below 32 degrees which is why were seeing some major icy issues on area roads. So snow and sleet about up to an inch around portions of wake county towards chatham, be and you look up to our north and west one to three around orange and durham ask that extends up towards south hill and portions of Person County could receive over 3 inches of snow ask sleet. Now, keep in mind because were seeing a lot more sleet early this morning these could keep the totals down. Its very icy and causing the problems this morning. Speaking of ice up to a 10th of an inch possible because of the freezing a rain that will include all the triangle areas. Just a trace so 37 in raleigh today, 36 in durham, 41 in fayetteville. Overnight tonight temperatures continue to climb which means rain continues to fall. Not freezing rain, no ice tonight, 37 degrees our overnight low and as we head into the coming days youll see the 50s, upper 50s for highs tomorrow, rain even some gusty continues at times then dryer weather work through on wednesday, thursday and friday, the 60s, how nice does that look. But very icy conditions out there this morning. Our roads a mess this morning theres no other way to describe it. Travel is dangerous. If you do not have to be on the roads early this morning stay at home. Lets take a look outside quickly first this is i85 and u. S. 70, you can see Police Activity there likely a wreck in that vicinity. And if we take a look at our traffic map youll see multiple wrecks around the area due to the snow and sleet that were seeing. On 440, theres one westbound at six forks road, also one that just popped up near glennwood avenue. Knightdale 264 and u. S. 64 have been reported to be solid sheets of ice in many spots in and around knightdale several wrecks reported there, and 40 westbound, 40 eastbound and 440 westbound reported some huge issues in morning multiple accidents and wreckers dispatched and some roads blocked there. So be careful if you do have to drive. Again if you dont please stay at home. Forecast and i have asthma. One of many pieces in my life. First lets find out what meteorologist Alyssa Corfont has to say. Good morning. Winter storm warning in effect now until 7 a. M. Tomorrow morning for person and orange counties those areas will be the last to changeover into cold rain. They may not see that until overnight tonight and thats why that warning is now going to extend a little later than initially anticipated. Widther weather advisory has also been extended until 7 p. M. For the triangle. That includes wake and durham counties. Now, if youre watching towards 95 and expire at 1 p. M. Had this afternoonment youll be the first to transition into a cold rain. Right now it may not look like much and its into the lot falling but the damage is done. Weve been dealing with sleet around the triangle very slick roadways there and that continues to fall around durham and Orange County, and then south and east of the triangle some sleet and even some freezing rain it looks like mixed in at times northward. Were dealing with light snow around granville, Warren County take your time if you have to head out. 23 right now in raleigh, durham and louisburg, 27 in clayton, the upper 20s down around the sand hills and again those areas going to be the first to transition into a cold rain this afternoon. So this is what your forecast looks like breaking it down snow and sleet at 8 a. M. , 27, 30 at noon freezing rain and sleet there. Change to go a cold rain around 3, 33, our more rain then tonight and tomorrow ill let you know when dryer are weather returns coming up in your complete forecast but speaking of the slick roads kristin theres so many accidents its hard to keep track. Roads a disaster this morning. If you do not have to drive this morning i would recommend staying home. Lets take a look first outside at one of our Traffic Cameras this is nc 147 and briggs avenue and trapping seems to be moving smoothly. A little slower than normal. You can see some brake lights. Heres a look at your live drive right now. Every red icon thaw see is a reported wreck. After the north hills exit we have a wreck and glennwood avenue just a couple of miles down the road. Knightdale, reports of 264 and 64 being solid sheets of ice, multiple accidents this that multiple wrecks as you can see on 440 westbound, wade avenue at 440 theres another one at hillsborough street. So weve got a lot of issues there and on 40 as well. So these our major roads around the triangle where we are seeing these icy so travel not advised if you dont have to be on the roads this morning stay at home and of course were seeing similar issues on side and back roads as well. So if you do have to travel definitely take your time. Boy, we know ice is no joke out there. Thanks a lot. Our Winter Weather coverage were going to head up to Orange County thats where we find Justin Quesinberry. I know youve seen varying conditions. Well, right now we still have most of what we have on the ground actually fell last night around 7 30 leaving us with a quarter of an inch to a half an inch take a look here this is the onramp to interstate 85 and 40. Its just wet at this point. We see traffic picking up on the interstate this morning and as you can see the lights there moving along okay, but it looks like everyones taking their time as they travel along the interstate this morning. Let me tell you though its a different story on the back roads this morning. I drove a couple of miles to this location on some back roads solid sheet of ice. Stay off of those if you have to and if you have to be on those roads this morning just take it very slow because im telling you you can notice every little hill that you may drive on every single day you dont notice how steep and slick it can be until its covered in this sheet of have to be on the roads at all. Wncns especially wright shes also riding around wake. I know youve been out there early this morning, how conditions right now . Theyre terrible. I mean were on highway 264 which is one of the roads that weve been talking about this morning that has some really really thick patches of ice and this is what were talking about this is what happens right here this is a tractor trailer thats jackknifed complete across the lanes on the other side is a smaller car that slammed into the front of the tractor trailer. The front end of in a car is completely gone, that horn that youre hearing thats from that car. Its got traffic in the eastbound lanes blocked up for miles. Its also got traffic even in the westbound lanes blocked up as people try to slow down and give the First Responders some room. The road itself is a complete sheet of ice. We really cant stress this enough. Its hard to tell because it is so dark out here ask a lot of that ice just looks very slick. People just crawling along when theyre out here. When we got off the exit to come onto 264 i counted 6, 7, 8 cars off the road. Folks who couldnt keep control and ended up sliding into the guard rails even as were out here Walking Around were not even anywhere near the road and off onto the side and its like each individual piece of ice. I mean, take a look at this, its solid, its frozen solid. Its a big piece of ice. This is what all of the roads look like. Youve got to take it slow be very careful. If and you have to take 264 east i would avoid it looks like its going to a while before this is all cleaned up. Boy, looks can be deceiving at first glance they look okay but they are slick mess. Weather alerts, closingsings, delays whatever you need know with the wncn weather appear. Just days after Supreme Court Justice Scalias death a battle is brewing between the republican led senate and the white house. I hope youre a two year old murder case in raleigh is winding down in the court system. Later who the prosecutors used as its last witness and who the defense did not call to the stand. And temperatures still well below freezing which means any sleet and freezing vein freezing on impact. 28 in fayetteville, 27 in dog mmmm. Weve been together since 2012. I do notice that sometimes i eat better than her. Beneful, and she eats a cheese stick and a cracker. Thats what she ate last night. Cheese stick and a cracker. Can you believe what some people put in their bodies . vo beneful originals is a healthy blend. Your dog will love. With whole grains, real beef and accents of vegetables. On this monday morning. It is 23 degrees right now at the Raleigh Durham international at airport and you can see the bottom of this camera as they look out towards the terminal actually frozen over this morning. Still falling as a whole but you look off to our north and west durham and orange counties for quite some time have been dealing with sleet are falling now across the majority of the counties. You look up to north though right around the virginia border thats still falling as some light snow around Person County, northeastern portions of Franklin County and southeast of the triangle its very scattered in nature but still some falling, also out towards wayne county this is morning and 95 cuts right through those counties. So watch especially bridges and overpasses will be the first to freeze over. So current temperatures 23 in durham and raleigh, 27 in littleton, 26 in sand ford. We all know it was a very cold weekend and those conditions priming anything thats falling to stick immediately especially if the roads untreated. Wintry mix continues through 10 a. M. Thats correct snow and sleet for the majority of us. 29 at 10 a. M. , back to 30 by sleet and freezing rain then and then as we head into the afternoon some warmer air starts to move in as it does, this is going to transition more to a rain event for us. 35 at 4 00, 37 our temperature right around 6. Temperatures continue to climb overnight and scattered showers still in the forecast ill let you know when dryer air works its way through and how much snow and slee when heartburn hits fight back fast tums smoothies starts dissolving the instant it touches your tongue and neutralizes stomach acid at the source tum, tum, tum, tum welcome back. Just treacherous conditions out there this morning. Ice on the road and as to the and sleet in the area. And right now weve got the North Carolina department of transportation on the phone right now. Good morning to you. Good morning. Okay so it seems you know of accidents that weve been watching this morning some drivers caught off guard. So tell us a little bit about what your department is going to get the situation under control. We had crews out almost all day saturday putting down the brine to try to reduce what stick to say the roadway that helps some and so crews in and around wake county came in around midnight last night. Theyve been out since the precipitation started falling this morning. Weve got crews going to all the bridges and overpasses, were also responding every time theres calls of an accident coming in. What were seeing on the major roads the bridges and overpasses things seem okay and they hit one of the bridges and its ice and they run into some big problem spots. Were going to mike, has it been a surprise to your crews on the roads how quickly the conditions of ice and at this point its sort of after the fact, is there anything extra special that your crews can do to make some of is it just sort of Mother Nature youre at her mercy. Definitely, no. With the salt and sand it definitely helps break up some of the ice, melt it and put some traction on the roadways and watching the weather for this one we kind of expected that was going to happen especially with the freezing rain come in but that said, when we put down over break up the ice it takes the temperatures to keep it clear. So as were seeing its looking like as the day goes on Mother Nature is is going to help us so our crews wont stop until the roads safe for travel. They definitely not safe this morning. Were continuing to encourage everyone to stay off the roads unless you absolutely have to be out there and if do if the road youre traveling on is not a problem spot one can pop up very quickly. As you were speaking to our viewers we were taking a look outside and saw a lot of flashing lights. Emergency crews all over the place dealing with some of the wrecks out there. So again your advice to drivers stay off the roads if at all possible. Stay home, at least during the Early Morning part of the day. Thats right. Thank you for helping us spread the word this morning too. All right. Thanks, mike. Well be checking with him throughout the morning. Thanks so much, and just a side note were going to continue our coverage through 8 a. M. And you can see the today show is going to be on 17. 2. Other news today the hugginsjones murder trial is expected to go to a jury this after the defense and prosecution rested on friday of last week. Medical examiner as its last witness of at one point melissas mother put her head down and clutched a tissue very emotional for her and her family. The medical examiner said hugginsjones had 18 different injuries and bled to death during the course of an hour. Defense lawyers said smith would not take the stand and they rested without presenting any evidence. And switching gears right now it is 6 47 on this monday morning. Heres the storm warning thats in effect right now through tomorrow morning at 7 a. M. It includes person and orange counties areas there expected to get more snow and more sleet making very dangerous travel conditions. All of us though really seeing the slick roadways out there develop this morning. The Winter Weather advisory will continue through 7 p. M. Today for wake county, areas off to the virginia border. Now, i am expecting some warmer air to move in earlier down around the sand hills and thats why your advisory is set to expire right around 1 p. M. Heres our satellite radar composite im showing you over the past two hours to show whats going on back to our west and this ex sustained so these showers especially around the virginia border going to hours. Very light in nature. So let me bring you into a closer look. It may be light but it is very dangerous because its coming down as ice. This is sleet falling around durham, orange counties towards person, granville, this is snow for you, let me show you areas south and east of the triangle then. Very scattered in nature but some sleet around portions of wilson county, towards wayne county, and you know 95 runs right through some of those counties. So very slick conditions there especially on bridges and overpasses. So temperatures 23 right now in raleigh in durham, 22 in roxboro, 28 in fayetteville. So as youre planning your day well be in the upper 20s at 8 a. M. Portion at lunchtime so still anything thats falling freezing on impact. To go a cold rain this afternoon. Our 6 00 temperature close to 37 degrees. So heres the setup today were watching this area of low pressure off to our south and west. Above that were looking at wintry mix that snow further north, freezing rain what happens overnight is that warm front lifts through the area, cold front still back to our west. Until that front clears our skies well continue to track the threat for rain but just that, plain old rain as we head towards tonight and tomorrow. Heres what it looks like on our future forecast, the wintry mix at 8 a. M. Continues through 10 a. M. , then we head into the afternoon that warmer air starts to arrive changing over into a cold rain around the providing that continues for your evening drive home. Overnight tonight scattered showers they continue and could be heavy at times. So tomorrow mornings commute could easily be a tricky one as well because a lot of water could be on the roadways. By noon tomorrow we start to see some dryer conditions for you. Heres the breakdown snow, freezing rain this morning then we could be looking at one to two inches of rain possible this afternoon into tonight and into tomorrow morning. For a breakdown though on your snow and sleet accumulations ill send it over to kristin. Thanks. We are seeing some snow and sleet in many locations around the area currently a lot of freezing rain also which is impacting some spots especially southeast of the triangle. Were looking up to one inch of snow ask sleet and because we have been seeing more sleet this morning expect this to be on the lower end of a lot of the totals that youre seeing. We had some snow showers already falling in part of durham and orange counties last night also north of the triangle thats that one to three stripe and Person County and roxboro were looking at upwards of 3 inches of snow. Our Ice Accumulation up to about a 10th of an inch around the triangle and points to the north and even back to the west and northwest as well but this is just enough to cause some issues like we are seeing out on the roads already this morning. So keep that in mind as you do multiple accidents. Be careful out there. The ice going to be a huge issue throughout had the morning. Thanks. So lets go ahead and talk about those temperatures for today 37 our high and again that wont be felt until say 6 p. M. This evening, 36 in durham, 41 in fayetteville, fast forward to tonight the coldest temperature will be the upper 30s, i think by day break tomorrow were in the upper 40s to low 50s, rain continues tonight throughout the day tomorrow, again, heavy down pours at times. The dry weather is here then thursday, friday and for the start of the week ends ahead. 60s both saturday and sunday. But were far away from the 60s right now. The icy conditions out there in this morning causing a lot of headaches. Every time i actually plot pops up to give you an idea how quickly theyre happening this morning. Lets start things off with a live look outside currently i85 and u. S. 70 where bridges and overpasses again, going to be some of the trickier spots this morning can because theyre elevated surfaces but traffic moving okay in that area currently and if we switch things over weve got multiple accidents on the belt line i440 westbound right after six be forks road, weve had reports u.
