We continue to learn more information from investigators. They have just confirmed that the body found is a woman, and i want to step out of the way so you can see, this is still a very active scene. Take a look. Police have put up crime scene tape around blocking off the parking lots to Furniture Store. Again, this is off new bern avenue. Police have confirmed the body this time, theres still a lot of unanswered questions. Weve seen them back behind a couple of trucks, but we still unclear whether or not detectives are investigating this death as suspicious or not. A sixyearold girl is supposed to be released from the hospital today. Authorities say she was kidnapped from her home and later found chained to a tree. Cbs North Carolinas david hurst joins us live in studio with who police say is responsible for this kidnapping. David. Police have taken a 46yearold sex offender into custody in connection with the kidnapping. Douglas edwards is accused of abducting sixyearold Stephanie Lopezcastro while she was playing outside her home wednesday evening. An amber alert then went out, few miles from her home. Family friends say she was found chained to a tree but is doing okay. The New Hanover County sheriff got emotional while announcing that she was found safe. We worked fire leslie, relent leslie through the night, and i am glad to say that thank the lord that we found her this morning. Alive and well. Not believe edwards knew the girl. A new york marn is badly hurt, and a Police Officer is recovering after a violent incident involving a meat cleaver. Police say it started when three officers were chasing a suspect. They say during the chase, he pulled the weapon from his waistband. They tried to tase him but that did not work. The suspect swung the cleaver at thats when the officer shot at the suspect 18 times, hitting him several times. I want to commend them for their bravery and performance and duty and pushback right off the bat about the number of shots that were fired. Sufficient shots were fired to deter the attack on my officers by this suspect Officials Say the suspect is in critical but stable condition. Unc Chapel Hill Student claims one of an appearance on cnn last night. She says the way she and the accused were treated during the initial investigation was what motivated her to go public with her story. I watched the videos and recordings of dpss interview of my rapist they spoke to him in a tone of comrade ree. They joked with him. They reassured him, and thats when i realized i needed to shed light on what was happening so go through this allen is the person accused in the case. Officials in santa ana chased this car along the freeway for an hour yesterday. They say it was driving reck leslie, almost hitting several cars, but then the suspect suddenly got off the highway and drove into the parking garage for a hospital. Thats when police say they lost them. Officers searched the area for about an hour but could not find them. 40 seconds isnt a whole lot thieves in texas, that was all they needed to get away with millions in jewelry. Houston police say it happened tuesday night. Four men dressed in all black with their faces covered rushed into the store. Employees and customers take cover as the men are seen using hammers to smash the glass cases. They grab expensive gold and diamonds and stuff them in a bag. Theyre in and out in less than a minute. Investigators believe the suspects may be part of a nationwide theft gang pulling off heists like this all over the country. Manatees are free this morning after being trapped for weeks. Wow, what a sight. The animals were trapped in a golf course pond by hurricane hermine. One, two, three. High water from hermine allowed the animals to move into that pond, but a blockage stopped them from getting back out. So with hundreds of people helping out, crews lifted the stranded manatees out of the water and back into the ocean. They had a little trouble, though, because several of the manatere want to be away from their young, as you can imagine, moms out there, but eventually all of the animals were safely moved. We are doing a little bit of roller coaster ride as we head towards the last chance for rain. It looks like that will be the best chance for rain, rather, that will arrive on monday. So lets talk first and foremost about today. We are far away, but it is out into the open atlantic enough that none of that rain is going to impact us. What we could see is some dangerous rip currents, maybe towards the wilmington area, certainly along South Carolina, as well, if you are traveling this weekend. We have the stationary front thats keeping that storm south of us, and with that front is close enough to home, that could bring us just a stray shower or two later today and as we head into the upcoming weekend. So making plans for your day ahead, we have a little bit of 70 degrees there. At noon, we should be right around 80, and then 84 our afternoon high. Winds at about 75 Miles Per Hour there. By the middle of next week, we should also have a clearer idea of where this track will go and how close to the east coast it will travel. Sex offender accused of kidnapping a sixyearold girl near wilmington is set to be in court today. New Hanover County deputies say the girl was playing in her yard when she was kidnapped. Its a parents Worst Nightmare but a fortunate ending as a sixyearold was found safe thursday morning. Deputies say someone kidnapped sixyearold Stephanie Lopezcastro while playing outside her home wednesday evening. An amber alert went out. 15 hours later, a k9 unit led police to her. She was found in a wooded area a few miles from her home. Witnesses say she was chained to a tree. Douglas edwards into custody. The wilmington man is a registered sex offender released from prison back in 2012. Authorities say they do not believe edwards knew the girl. It was the worst day for us yesterday because not even we dont know whats going on with her, if she was doing okay. Now, the sixyearold was taken to the hospital, but the family tells us she is in Good Condition and is expected to be released today. Back to you. Carolina Police Officer killed in the line of duty is being laid to rest today. Shelby officer tim brackeen was serving a warrant last weekend when police say he was shot. He died several days later. Officer brackeens service will be in shelby. The man accused of shooting the officer, 23yearold Irving Fenner jr. Was captured in rhode island tuesday night, but now, hes fighting extradition back to North Carolina so a warrant from the Governors Office will be required to get him back in the state. Prosecutors plan to seek the Death Penalty against him. Authorities say several of his Family Members face charges for helping him. Several Police Officers in columbus, ohio are on leave this morning. Authorities say the officer shot a 13yearold boy wednesday night. It started when officers responded to a call about an armed robbery. When they arrived, they saw a group of three people. Two of them ran. When officers tried to take the suspects into custody, they say one of them pulled out what looked like a gun. Him. But investigators later learned that that was a bb gun. We found a gun at the scene near the suspect that we were trying to apprehend, and this is what that gun looked like. 13yearold tyrie king later died at the hospital. Investigators are still talking to witnesses, trying to figure out exactly what happened. They are also still searching for one of the three suspects. We are also getting an up close and personal view of an amazing rescue in winstonsalem thanks to new Police Body Camera videos. A druk got into a headon collision and several people nearby immediately jumped in to help. By the time police got there, bystanders were hard at work also, rescue the trucks driver. After several minutes, the group was able to get the driver out safely, likely saving his life. Now, its just going to meander off the coast of South Carolina over the next few days, becoming a remnant low heading into early next week chl winds, though, still possible right around 30, 35 Miles Per Hour. Could cause some dangerous rip currents, say, towards the wilmington area, if you are along maybe, like, you are heading to the coast this weekend. Then we have Tropical Storm carl. This strengthened, as well, yesterday. Winds at 45 Miles Per Hour. It is going to cruise right to the west across the open atlantic, strengthening over the weekend, and could become a category 1 hurricane as we head towards, say, next tuesday or wednesday. At that point in time, it would have winds of 75 Miles Per Hour. I think by next wednesday, well have a better idea of where this storm is heading, but we will have to Pay Attention to it as 83 in durham, and 86 in fayetteville. Then tonight, 67 our low. So a little more comfortable than what were waking up to this morning, but still pretty cloudy.
