A couple other things were watching besides the radar. Temperatures you see, just a few of us mainly in the sand hills along the i95 are above freezing and thats barely. Everyone else in thes to of 20s. Anything falling and that stuff already on the ground is going to remain frozen or get frozen. Then we have the winds. A lot of ice on power lines and trees. I dont know if youve heard t but trees snapping, Power Transformers popping all over town because our winds keep blowing that ice around on the trees and power lines and its gusting even higher than that. So Power Outages will continue to be a problem. In addition to stuff still coming out of the sky, issues with travel and were not going to warm up tomorrow. We do have warmer weather and sunshine in the forecast. Ill take you to that and go hour by hour through tomorrow in a few minutes. With the precipitation continuing to freezing rain and sleet, theres a wide range of downed power lines as wes was saying to slick sidewalks and roads. Our meteorologist shows us the dangers supposed posed by this mix. The winter storm warning continues. Were getting precipitation which continues to pile up the ice on these tree branches. You can see here almost a quarter of an inch of ice. That gets dangerous because some of this can be heavy and fall. Another thing is, ive got sustained winds 12. 6 miles per hour, but its been gusting. These branches will probably fall down, power lines might fall down. Its a dangerous situation out here. The other thing to think about maybe tomorrow, if youre going to head out to your car, this is what you might find. All of this ice on here. Youre concerned about cleaning that, obviously, if you were to drive. But the thing that im worried about is when you step towards your car, youll be on your sidewalk or driveway. Look what youre walking on in a lot of instances. All this sleet thats ice. If we do get snow starting tomorrow morning that, could be covered and you wont even see it. Thats an accident waiting to happen. The woods yet as we continue this winter storm. In raleigh, for wncn news now. Falling tree limbs helping contribute to Power Outages. One ever tonights big concerns. Do you think energy is reporting that we are among the hardest hit areas. This is a look at the outage map a short time axe. Wake county had more than 40,000 affected by hour outages. More than 130,000 across the state. 12 hours of ice is now definitely taking a toll. Michael highland joins us now from the staging area with an update. Michael. Reporter were getting a break from the precipitation, but the wind has started to pick up again. That is going to be the concern for next couple of days. I want to you look at the staging area duke energy has set up. Crews coming today from florida and michigan to help out. Wake county over 40,000 Power Outages here. Statewide, nearly 124,000 customers without power. Finding a place not only to get warm but to also stay safe in the storm. Im thankful to be inside. We got the fire started. Reporter earlier today she was in a tent unsure if shed find somewhere to go. I was questioning how bad its going to be. Is it going to show up . I should have planned earlier, and then i learned the hard way. The importance of planning ahead of time. Reporter wake county opened this shelter for the weekend. Shannon was the first to arrive. We have an open shelter for warm place. They can woman and stay here. Reporter as the ice accumulates on the trees and outages will become more common. Towely, we anticipate tomorrow as people are waking up f theyre not having power in the area, we do have a few calls from individuals who are homeless and seeing if they are able to come here. Of customers in wake, johnston counties lost power during the storm. When they tried Call Duke Energy to report it, some of them couldnt get through. A spokeswoman for the utility says it was intermittent and it people were working to fix it if the outages are prolonged, joininger. If theres no other place to go its hard finding help out there. Reporter duke energy is encouraging female report outages by text or online. They are working to get that phone issue resolved. Wake county emergency officials are warning people though that the power could be out this weekend for up to 48 hours. Be prepared for that. Live in wake county. Wncn news now. Good to know a shelter is open throughout the weekend. Utility workers are working hard tonight. The past 24 hours, troopers have responded to more than 1,000 accidents across the state. Day. It took them a minute because they were having problems on the road. Reporter those main roads have been plowed and salted, but what about the smaller roads, the ones that plow trucks havent gotten to . You can see they have ice on big hill. What happens when you live up that hill . Tony has livered up that hill for 40 years. Fourwheel drive vehicle makes a difference. Reporter there is strategy involved. They park at the top of the hill. People that arent used to driving it and suddenly they get hit with a storm, with a two wheel drive vehicle, thats tough. We are live outside. You are looking at these pictures of north brook drive. You can see, theres a power outage being reported there. The lights at that intersection are not working. So, again, it is very dangerous out there tonight with the hazard of these tree limbs falling, these Power Outages happening. We want to take another live look outside. This time over i40. A ghost town there this evening. Friday night, no one on the roads and its safe as weve locations. This is a look at the intersection of glenwood and blue ridge. The roads are white and slick at this time as they are pretty much frozen over. Also, no cars, which is good news, however, they do should some have power over in that area. An accident tonight shut down i40 after power lines it happened just before 6 00 in benson. The road was shut down for several hours as crews worked to remove the power lines. This was the scene on i95 in Johnston County earlier this afternoon. One person was killed after a tractortrailer jackknifed. A driver in a pickup from virginia was killed. Crews will work throughout the night to try and keep the roads clear. This was the scene late this afternoon at the d. O. T. Yard in wake county. There are 70 workers in wake county. More than 2,000 across the state. After a certain time, with the constant precipitation, it doesnt take very long for it where im seeing the accidents is where it looks people are speeding. Because they assume its safe because they dont see snow on the roads. Thats our greatest concern right now. Crews will put silt down to keep the roads safe. Thousands of people trying to fly had to make other plans. Most airlines canceled their flights. Some had flights scheduled but they ended up being caged as the day went on. By the end of the day. Twothirds of the flights had been caged. Major airlines are waving fees waiving fees. Passengers are wondering if they will get where they want to go to. Its frustrating because you dont know, you know, when youre going to leave. It happens. You cant control it. Im 53 years old years nearly 150 airlines and arrivals have been canceled for tomorrow as well. At this time, only 10 flights are scheduled depart rdu before noon. A few other travel updates for you. Chapel hill transit will not operate service tomorrow. Neither will Carry Transit go triangle have operate limited service by 10 00 a. M. Check in with us tomorrow morning for an update. The heaviest snow as has been falling to the north and west. We have had a crew there all day. They had two inches of snow, but it has turned to sleet. We are joined from roxboro. Whats the latest . Reporter pretty quiet out here right now as you guys mentioned. It snowed today up until about 1 00. Then it was all sleet from that point and now not much. A little bit of wind and cold temperatures. If you take a lookout, youll see still a fair amount of people out here on the roads. Were on highway 501. Rightfully so. Folks here say this is pretty standard for winter. They get snow incidents like this several times every single year. They say that theyre used to it its not too bad for them. We even met up with a family who went out sledding this evening. I know this hill thats deep and theres no traffic. You dont have to worry about anything. You go fast, dont you . I wanting to slow because i get scared. There havent been the reported Power Outages that weve seen in some of the other counties. They are keeping an eye on it. Look at this guy, obviously having a little bit of fun in the snow. Thats not something you want to do in these type of conditions, but, you know, more power to them. We had the day off work and school and we open that front door and its not snow, but its ice. You cant go play it it was miserable outside. Its not going to be a lot better tomorrow. Weve got snow, but a lot. Heres what the radar looks like right now. Weve still got that familiar green, white, pink, and purple. Weve got rain, light snow up by the virginia border. Most of the rain pulling out of our area and that will be the last of the rain, but you still see that wintry mix in and around Johnston County up i95. Weve got another batch, two more batches coming up in the next 24 hours. Then weve got snow in tennessee that will swing it will be snow. Thats for certain. Its most likely going to be accumulation. Heres what we have in the roxboro, snow and sleet. Youre going to see numbers as they continue to come in over the next couple of days and theyre going to be lower than what we had originally talked about because more of the precipitation was sleet than snow. Snow, it falls and piles up. Its nice and fluffy. Sleet falls and stays compact and it doesnt measure up to as much. A lot the totals you see are snow and sleet and theyre going to be lower because that sleet is a little more compact. Orange county, 2 and a half inches there. In durham, 2 inches. Less than that in lewisburg. As we talked about, this was never going to be the biggest snowstorm weve ever had. It was never going to be a big ice storm. The combination of both, you add in the cold and the wind and it was miserable. Its not going to be much better tomorrow. Here is our tower cam 100 feet up in the air. You can see a nice glaze of ice. The precipitation still falling in the form of freezing rain. It is 26 degrees. If we could seethrough to the roads like we can up here at in chapel hill on franklin street, you can see theyre white and slush covered. With temperatures staying in the 20s overnight, theres not going to be any melting. Thats not going to be melting tomorrow because it will stay cloudy. There is snow chances in the morning tapering off in the afternoon. Its another wind eye day. Well see Power Outages tomorrow like we will overnight and its not warm at all. 20s until the morning with wind chills in the teens. We might make it up to 33, but wind chills are not out of the 20s. So when you role out of bed in the morning, a couple roll out of bed, check those temperatures and wind chill. App. See where the snow is . We have a radar. Then its going to start to pull away as that low pulls away. Look at this in the afternoon. Were barely above freezing. Were not going to notice it its not going to be warm up in enough to melt anything. As we get into the late evening, moisture, clouds start to pull away. We drop into the 20s sunday morning. So if youve got errands to run and you think sunday is going to be the day. You have church. Theres going to be ice on the roads. It wont be until we get into the afternoon and we get into the 40s that well start to see improvements on area roads. I wouldnt be surprised if we have delays for schools on monday morning. Lets get through tomorrow, first of all. Its going to be cold, windy, and cloudy. Not the icy mix, but light snow after 33 tomorrow, its 40 degrees on sunday. Obviously the pick day of the weekend. Were near 50 on monday. And look at monday morning by the way. I mentioned school delays. Its going to be 20 degrees. You know there will be ice and you know how cautious we are about that. Start keeping an eye on that for monday morning. Weve got another cold front that will bring us only rain tuesday and wednesday. Its a small chance. Were less than 48 hours away from football in charlotte. It will be dry. There will be no snow or ice, but boy, will it be cold when the panthers and the cardinals kick off. Temperatures in the 30s.
