Isis, our Holly Williams reports from the from the line. Thats all ahead on face the nation. Good morning and welcome to face the nation. Im john dickerson. With just over two weeks to go until election day an early voting already happening in many states, hillarclinton leads in the polls, leaving some republicans to worry about a rout and possible fingerpointing is already under way inside the g. O. P. Meanwhile, donald trump continues to say he joining us now is the chairman of the Republican Party, reince priebus. Welcome, . R mr. Chairman. Good mor, john. Dickerson is donald trump going to win . Yeah, he is going to win, and hes going to win because i think people in this country have had enough and hes the change agent. When it comes down to risk in this country, hillarys been tested and shes failed. Shes the risky candidate. You look at russia, the uranium deal giving them control 206 of the worlds uranium. Her pocketing hundreds of and the mess she left there. What im saying is she was tried and tested. She failed. Shes too risky for this country. Thats why shes gointhe lose. Dickerson 100 behind donald trump . Hes the nominee of our party. Of course were behind donald trump. This is ridiculous, as if we wouldnt b behind the nominee of the party. Of course we are. Dickerson do you think the election is in danger of being stolen . New york i dont, but what i think the media is missing here is that to ask ad weeks before the election if they lose are they going to concede, asking for a concession speech, no one does that, and i think if its a close election, look, if you lose by 200 votes in florida, are you going to concede on Election Night if youre at 260. Dickerson but thats not what hes saying. Hes not saying if its a squeak. Hes saying its been stolen at this moment and the only way ill lose is if its stolen. Thats really different. Thats not quite what hes grounds for a recount, i will exercise my options. He is not. He is not willing to no concede if he loses and theres no fraud. Dickerson but his mouth is in a different place than where you think his head is. He says if he loses pennsylvania, a state republicans havent won since 88, he says it will only be because it was stolen for him. Thats not where weret. Thing. Losing by 100,000 is another thing. Dickerson its not just the media. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said, this election is not rigged and its irresponsible to say it is. Is nikkihaley right or is donald trump right . I think theyre two people saying two different things. I think if youre donald trump an you see the barrage a the media implosion on every single thing this guy does, no matter what it is, he eats corn fakes another cable show on msnbc is talking about it 24 hours a y. If you look at Hillary Clinton, what shes got away with on this email scandal, wn you have general cartwright going to prison for doing onetenth of her. Dickerson i understand that. B im trying to put you in the mind of a person running for president and sees this unbelievable wld around him, and then you this hear about fraud at the ballot box, and you say, you know what, im going to reserve all options. Dickerson but reserving options is different thaay lets just say it. The probleis the difference between what y say and and what he says. But i know where hes at on this. Dickerson would you advise him as the public party chair is make this distinction clear because youre going to incite your followers to think this election is being stolen from them and thats dangerous. And he did do that. He did do that. Dickerson hes still talking about an election being stolen. Dickerson i dont mean his onse to the debate. Last night. Hes trying to also tell his folks to watch out for this fraud that might occur. But look, its not. Im telling you, we know tat ts is not millions of people, but what were talking about are things like if youook at the Milwaukee Police report that came out about six years ago, the Milwaukee Police department put out a 70page report on Election Fraud in milwaukee. This wasnt the Republican Party. Im saying this is real. So les nt. Where were acting like its a figment of peoples imagination. Dickerson but the Police Report found fraud but not enough to steal to will efntle it wasnt even close. So thats. If you lose by 100 votes that might. Dickerson lets move on mr. Chairman, because i want to ask you about last time you were here, you said republicans who didnt support donald trump, who wanted to run for president in the future, might face some punishment from the party. Is that still the case . The election, but we expect to win. I think unifying the party is something thats always the job of a chairman of party and all the people involved in our party. Thats what we expect to do. So well leave that for another time. Christa but theyre not under. They shouldnt worry . The point is i think given the choice between someone who has been tried and tested and fail and someone that cant be trusted like Hillary Clinton and soone that wants to change up the system, i think all republicans should support the nominee of dickerson what if they dont . Somebody like paul ryan, is paul ryan a good republican . Of course. Hes a great republican. Hes one of the brightest stars in our party. Hes a great friend, smart, one of the most purehearted people ive ever known in politics. So, yes, hes a great republican. I think all. When you havewo parties, this isnt italy. We dont have 12 different parties where everyone can fit neatly into a box. So we have to understand that. Our job is to bringas many anmake the case. Thats what were doing every day. Dickerson i wa a you about bringing people into the room. Ats the point of the autopsy you hadri afterhe 2012 election, said,oj at the 2012 race. The republican rty nds to stop talking to itself. We have become exs in how to reinforcemento likeminded ople. A loof people would say that descris exactly thkind of race donald trump is runng, totally opposite of what was i say youre not ving him any credit for going into cleland and detroit countless time, talking about school choice, meeting with black and hispanic pastors, talking about the fact that the democrats take advantage of these communities every four years, tell them what they want to hear, dont follow up with loans for Small Business owners who has been to be black or hispanic. They dt follow up on education reform. Theres no followup on any of these prises. So if you look at what the well, weve put our money where our mouth is. ve put money in blk and hispanic and asian engagement like no party in modern history has ever done. But let me tell you something about the report, it isnt just a diagnosis of the Republican National committee. The report is a message to the enti par as a whole and i stand behind it 100 . Dickerson even though Donald Trumps numbers with african american, latinos and women are so bad . Its n effort that not been put in. I mean, fit of all, i contend hes going to do better inack communies thane have done four and eight years ago, but what this prescription iis a prescription for the long term, not the short term, and being active 24 7 in black and hispanic communities, talng about the issues that matter in those communities is wha our partieare all t. We a th party of equality, priebus, thanks. You bet. Dickerson the morning after thst president ial debate we sa down with some voters in the battleground state of nevada in a las vegas restaurant to get the views of some of the people who will acally shape this election. Donald trump was asked in the debate if he would abide bythe outcome of the election, was anybody struck by his reacti d what he said . Not ah as they made a big deal. Not as much as they made a big deal out of it. If i was in his position and there was any, i believe the Voting System is corrupt. I believe politicians are corrupt. I believe the congress is corrupt. Dickerson quickly, you said that you expected trump to say that . I thought hede not evasive, but being cute on it a little bit, he will accept it, mr. Trump is a very succes nessn. Dickerson ho y know that hell accept it . Just by theaye handles things. He wanted to leave it on. He wanted to create a little i dont think hes intereed i really dont. Dickerson whats he interestedn . Hes going to start a media empire after this with all the people hes met and surrounded himself with. Dickerson you believe that too . Yes. Dickerson who here thinks donald trump is not on the level, that hes in it for some other thing, not actually win the presidency in. I dont agree. I think hes in to win. Hes not going to quit. I think hell fight to win, but hes already planning next phase, trump tv at some point. Dickerson how many of you here feel like the election system is rigged . I dont think itsgg as far as donald trump saying that its rigged, how are you running for a country but dont have faith in it . You know, how are you going to call the system ried, the system that youre running for, that you want to be in command of, and youre going to say its rigged, like as an american, thats offensive. Dickerson let me ask you, youre undecided. When do you think youll make up your mind . Whats your process going to be . What im going to have to millennials. Ill hopefully being living here in america for another 50, 6 years. I want a president thats going to put my generation at the forefront and maximize our success here in this country. And so i think ultimately were looking at these two candidates and their integrity. Dickerson john, what do you think about that qutionf integrity . They bot have pretseris issues, and so at some point you have to say, you ha to understand, donald trump has a history of integrity issues, so does hillary clion. For t next questio i ask as an economist, who is going to be best for the economy. Assuming that theyve both got eir al, who is going to screw up the economy less or not do anything to harm the recovery . I ink whats happed, john, and you see this in las vegas, were one of the poster children of the great recession. Absolutely. We have come to believe were immune to the laws of economics and gravity and we acted that economy. Now that the whole world i guess went through this global recession, were recovering out of it, its slow. Dickerson corey, let me ask you on this question of character and integrity, youre a supporter of hillary . I clinto, how do you think through some of the challenges and some ofhe views people have about Hillary Clinton and her lack of trustworthiness . How do you make sense of all that . If i were patient going into have lifechanging surgery, do i want the doctor who is well seasoned and has done this surgery , or do i want to take my chance on the rookie who is just coming out of, you . . Know, school an doesnt have the knowledge or the experience doing Something Like that. And, you know, the whole email thing, until shes proven guilty, shes innocent. Thats what our country operates f of. Dickerson but what she hast mitted is she did have her own private server. Right. Dickerson for you is that something that, you know, she comingp front, it did put some uneasiness in individual, but i think there are far moregreater thingsto worry about in the woansobodys yahoo dicrson let me ask you this question, barbara. Corey made the case that if youre going toget surgery, good to have a doctor the ins and outs of surgery, not somebody who i ne to presidency that makeit pretty good for Hillary Clinton. But you have new doctors in try Something Different and something groundbreaking and revolutionary. That happened to my husband. He had an ankle replacement. We saw nine doctors befor we could find one, and many of them were experienced doctors, they fl out refused to do it. We found a doctor who tried something new and tried Something Different d my let me jump in. I think. If you dont mnd, john. Dickerson sure. The problem with donald trump is the way he answers questions likehis, it appears he graduated from the trump medical school, okay, because hes going to do the best surgery, its going to be great, its going to be the greatest surgery ever, but theres no details. Its always these bombastic statents of great and wonderful, were going to win so much, were going to get tired of winning and thats about you . Whats a big issue for y . Morality and va. Based on what the country w based on. I think that the la that obama have passed, the way the downtuing. Some other people ared of it a happyor it. All this stuff, i am against. Dickerson when donald trump says make America Great again, is that what you hear, that its going to go back before the time youre now describing . Thats part of it. Dickerson imberly, the day after the election Hillary Clinton isresident, whats your Quick Reaction . Not surprised. I have hope. Dickerson caitlin . I pray that her policy translates to keep American Values at the forefront. I do not respect her. Oh, no. We need prayer. The country a i say bless her in all that she does. I think shell be able to negotiate with theongress to get things done with ryan and oconnell. Dickerson its the day after the election. Donald trump has won. Whats your reaction . Ill be pleased. Wish him well. Keep a cool hand and do your best. I hope he finds good people to surround himself with and keep himself in check and i have hope. Dickerson john . Ill pray that jon stewart comes back to Comedy Central and it will be great when he comes back. Dickerson corine . Im moving off the grid. No. Im open to change, and well see what happens. Dickerson and well be ba with a minute from some surprising results from our cbs news Battleground Tracker, includinwhether florida g. O. P. Voters who picked donald trump in the primary have any regrets. [burke] hot dog. Seen it. Covered it. We know a thing or two because weve seen a thing or two. . We are farmers. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum . Dickerson and were back with our Battleground Tracker poll. In florida the race is still very tight. Hillary clinton is up three points over donald trump. Thats 46 to 43 . In texas, those numbers are reversed. Trump is up 46 and clinton is at 43 . Cbs news election director Anthony Salvanto joins us now. Anthony, well get to florida, but why were you in texas this republican states in the country, but it tells a broader story, and this is that donald trump is underperforming with a lot of key groups republicans usually this well with, white men, white collegeeducated women. I would caution. I dont think that Hillary Clinton is in a position to outright win texas at this point, but it does tell that story of why things are generally closer overall. Dickerson and shes up with hispanics there, too, which helps. Florida, now, whats the situation on the ground there . Well, Hillary Clinton is up. Shes up three. Shes still low on a number of key regular people, but she does have one thing donald trump does not, and that is near complete support from her own party. Shes got 9 in 10 democrats. Trump has 8 in 10 republicans. Thats something thats plagued him all along through thi campaign and its just enough to cost him. Dickerson debates are about ginning up support in your own group, and Hillary Clinton seems to have done tha coming out of her three debates. Is there anything donald trump can do in the last 18 days in florida to help themself . Well, voters say they think things they want to hear. And one of those things they say is change. Change washington, shake up the political system. So thats one rhetorical place that he can go. Dickerson one other thing you did, anthony, in florida, is you went back to republican primary voters who picked trump big over marco rubio, the sitting senator in the state, is there any remorse amo those voters in republicans in florida . Not really. If they had a time machine and could go back to the republican primary in the spring, they would still voteordr even though they say trump has some flaws as a candidate at this point, the Republican Base is still closer to and Donald Trumper is stillloser to the Republican Base than anything their leadership has to offer. Dickerson thats why hes been trying to talk about derange the swamp in washington, but hes really been talking about fraud. What are Republican Voters in florida saying about fraud . Well, republicans overwhelmingly think it exist, that it is widespread, but heres the kicker, john. They think donald trump would faith in institutions and some what exceptionally American Institution that we see . H 5 9 out right now. Dickerson they think its not just that fraud happens but the election will be stolen. You on Election Night look all over the whole country and you have for various cycles. Whats your feeling about this idea of an election being . I stolen . Well, think about how decentralized this whole election system is. What i see on Election Night is 3,000 counties, h and theyre all coming in from all across the country. Theyre counted locally. Theyre counted by your friends, by your neighbors, by your county officials. You can imagine something on that side and that scope, shenanigans here and there, well, anything is possible, but that is a big and uniquely american system. Dickerson you also in your polling went looking for trump voters who might not be in traditional polls for one reason or another. This is an argument the trump people have been making that show Hillary Clinton ahead. What did you find . A couple things. One, when you look at the early vote coming in already. There are already one million ballots coming in from florida, you see people voting have already voted before. Thats evidence against the idea that theres new folks coming into the system. And also the trump voters in our poll say that the people around them also are talking about voting for donald trump. So there doesnt seem to be a lot of hesitancy to talk about the fact that youre for donald trump. Dickerson because the theory is that people dont want t your argument is if theyre telling their friends theyre voting for trump, if theyre proud in their communities, they wont be shy with the pollster . And we have th primaries for the most part where people said they would vote for him, and they did. Theres been that consistentt finding. Dickerson all right, Anthony Salvanto, thank you so much for being with us. Thank you. Dickerson well be back in . Jake reese, . Day to feel alive . . . Jake reese, . Day to feel alive . . . Before it became a medicine, it was an idea. A wild whatif. So scientists went to work. They examined 87 different protein st there were thousands of patient and workedvolunteersng years. And the hope of millions. And so after it became a medicine, someone who couldnt be cured, . Dickerson and we turn now to republican consultant and cbs frank, i want to start on this question of voter fraud. Donald trump has been talking about it. The was also video released this week from project veritas that showed a democratic strategist talking about busing people. Is that why with . I that kind of video footage, is that why republicans come out in such big numbers thinking the election is going to be stolen . Republicans have felt this ever since Rudy Giuliani 1993. Theres always been a concern that particularly in urban america people who shount be voting are and that theyre voting more than once. Its toxic. This feeling that the electoral system is rigged, the more that grow, the more impossible it will be after this election to govern. I got to tell you, ive been todang this now for 25 years, and ive never seen a higher percentage of americans who are preped to completely toss o no faith in the institutions that run us, and . bring people together to Work Together in when all these connections have been frayed . Dickerson let me take the time line back a bit before we think about after the election. What about right now . When voters hear the election is going to be stolen and if donald trump lose, whats your sense talking to voters . Whatou reactions . Ive been to 26 states now. Ill probably make it to 30 befohe coming together. I think its going to be very challenging for the g. O. P. Because youve got some trump voters who are unwilling to vote for a republican for senate or congress as a way to send a message to the establishment, and you have some independents who want to vote republican for the senate and the house but wont because theyre too connected to donald trump. With only 17 days to go, ive interparty battles going on at a time when the republicans should be focused on the democrats and prosecuting the case against their leadership. Dickerson just 40 seconds before a break and well have you back, but do you think its an attempt, a turnout me to say the voting is rigged, its being stolen from you as a way to bring unity and party thats having its own internal bickering. The way to bring unity . R is o talk about change in washington, is to talk about the economy that isnt delivering for hardworking taxpayers, to talk americans they arent better off, that 53 of americans are living paychecktopayeck, struggling to get by. Thats more of a unifying message. Christa well get back and talk about that change message when we have you on the other side. So everybody stick with us and well be back with a moment. Hear from the players its a its not uncommon for autistic kids to flap their hands. Than party. My son max cant live in trump rld. So im crossing party lines and voting for hillary. I dont always agree with her, but shes reasonable. And shes smart. She can workh pele to solve problems. I want to be able to tell my kids that i did the right thing when it really matted. Dickerson welcome back the face the nation. Im john dickerson. We continue with republican strategist and cbs kutian frank luntz. Frank, you mentioned change, and that was the message that would bring republicans together. Donald trump has been talking about what hell do in his first 100 days. He talked about derange the swamp in washington. Is that what thats all about . It or even months ago. I dont now why he waited this long. When you have 70 Million People watching the debates, thats when he should have released his plan for the first 100 days. What rpuicans should look at, because theres going to be a lot of recrimination when this election is over, is that the focal point was not on those forgotten americans that donald trump talked about a year ago as he began his candidacy, its that its all focused on him, his battles with the women, his battles with t media, his the vision for those people who have been left behind, this race would be a lot different than it is right now. Dickerson you say recriminations. Do you think its over . Do you think hes going the lose . I dont think its over. If you look at polling numbers in key states, there are enough people still undecided. Hillary clinton in almost, almost every poll is below 50 . I dont think shes going to get a majority on electionay. But it requires a level of discipline that the Trump Campaign has not had. Voters, not the voice of donald trump. Dickerson istthe campaign or is it the candidate you think where the signal is getting lost . I think its both. And in the testing that we do, donald trump scor really well when he talks about changing the budget and Holding People accountable. But he scores really badly when he starts attacking Hillary Clinton on personal terms or even goes as far back as bill clinton. John, i have never seen a campaign that has less an effective vision at a time when more americans are demanding a cnge in the way their government works. This should have been a slam dunk for the g. O. P. Dickerson all right. Frank luntz, thanks so much for being with us. We appreciate it. Thank you. Dickerson we now go to democratic strategist and cnn political consultant David Axelrod who is also in chicago. David, we must congratulate you first, a little history for the cubs. We wish them well next week in the world series. On dickerson now that weve gotten that out of the way, give us your sense where this race stands right now. Look, i dont know any consultant on either side, any strategist who privately believes that Donald Trumps going to win this election, i think that Hillary Clinton is in a very strong position now. And you can see it with the fact that shes pressing into these normally republican bastions. Your own pol in texas was shocking. And shes doing well in virtually every being state, traditional battleground state. So the question now that you hear is what impact will it have down the ballot. Thats where i think the focus is going to be for the last couple weeks. Dickerson in those house and senate races. Youve been in one of these. You know about early voting, the voting taking place right now. How does the campaign, if its doing as well as the Clinton Campaign appears to be doing, at the early voting and what can they do strategically in the next 16 days that we should be looking at as we watch this campaign . Well, this is one of the places where they have an advantage because they have invested in the acutements of modern politics, in at it an lettics. Who is voting early . They assigned scores in these battleground states to these voters to assess the likelihood that theyll be voting democrat or republican. Doing. They know who hasnt voted, who should be voting for them, and theyll be pressing those people. Theres no comparable operation in the Trump Campaign. The Republican Party has it, but the Republican Party has to make a decision as to whether they brg out voters for their Senate Candidates and congressional candidates, notwithstanding where they think those voters are on donald trump. Dickerson do you think the fact that Hillary Clinton is now talking about she took on senator pat toomey, the republican in pennsylvania, and is spending y democrats get elected in congress, is that something they can do because theyre seeing this early vote come in, or is it just simply theyre looking at the National Polls and thinking they have that freedom to move a little bit off of their attack directly at donald trump . I think you can assume theyve got pretty sophisticated polling, and each of these battleground states. But i think there is a potential trap for the democrats and for Hillary Clinton. Because the voters who are drifting from republicans are republican, collegeeducated republican, independent voters who might lean republican. If you partisanize the race too sharply, you may drive some of those voters back. So she has to be careful about how she makes her appeal in the final weeks, trying to get people out, trying to get people to vote, but talking more broadly about how shes goings to bring the country together rather than turning it into a partisan fight. Dickerson weve talked about message at the center of the Clinton Campaign, one of those hacked emails that came out this week is a conversation inside the Clinton Campaign back in february, her pollster who you know well, writes in one of those emails, do we have any sense from her, her meaning the candidate, what she believes or wants her core message to be . Is that still a challenge for her campaign . What that core message is . Well, yeah, i think it is things that frank luntz just talked about. Donald trump has become the issue in this campan. He has made himself that. He has made himself the center of discussion. And that has overwhelmed every other issue. So even though shes going into this election with historically high liability in comparison to donald trump, she is doing quite well. Dickerson Oprah Winfrey tried to make the case for ary clinton saying, you n thats not a. What do you make of that . Well, i think the people. This is a binary choice. One of these people is going to be president of the uni states. What people have concluded, and you see it in every poll, is that Hillary Clinton has the competence and theeament to be. They have questions about donald trump on both those things and thats whats making it impossible for him to make progress. Dickerson David Axelrod from chicago, thank you so much for being with us. Great to be with you, john. Christa well be right this portion of face the nation is sponsored by b. P. Its not a banner that goes on a wall. Its not something you do now and then. I thought i heard my friend carol. Anyway, back to your question about the way that donald treats women. [laughter] dickerson that was Kate Mckinnon playing Hillary Clinton from last nights saturday night live. For some analysis on the reallife moments in the debate and more, were here with wall street journal column fist and cbs news contributor peggy noonan Jamelle Bouie is here, Jeffrey Goldberg is here, we congratulate him on his new role at the atlantic. He was just named and ed okeefe covers politics for the washington post. Well kick our conversation off from Kate Mckinnon. Well run a clip of Hillary Clinton answering a question or not answering a question from a debate. Well, everything i did as secretary of state was in furtherance of our countrys interest and our values. The state department has said that. I think thats been proven. But i am happy, in fact, i am thrilled the talk about the Clinton Foundation, because it i am so proud of the work that it does. Dickerson that was a question, peggy, about allegations and proof in emails both hacked and also found through freedom of information requests of a closeness between the Clinton Foundation and the state department. She was asked about that closeness and her pledge to make sure there was no appearance of closeness, and she went and just talked about the great things the foundation was doing and didnt answer the question at all. In politics, they say if youre thats one way to look at it. You might say that was avowing to the fact that she has no argument to make here that is going the really make you think, oh, there was no pay for play, and if those allegations are wrong. I did think it took a special maybe gumption is the word to say, and we know i have only department said. That is like, you tell me you did something wrong and i say, oh, no, i didnt, and i know i didnt because me said i didnt. It was her state department. So what can she do but pivot away from something that i think is a serious charge that even people in your focus group were talking about. Its just out there. Everybody knows what they think. Dickerson its out there, jamelle, but she seems to have come throu t in a much stronger position, so maybe she hasnt paid. People dont penalize her for not answering a question and donald trump helps her by taking the bait and going off and doing his own thing. Right. I think part of the problem for donald trump in trying to capitalize on allegations of pay for play are really is with the scandals around clinton, you can find a similar problem around trump. Out that trump also has a foundation, and at least our Foundation Helps people, his just seems to purchase portraits of himself and that dynamic exists for so many allegations against clinton or scandals against clinton that she can just avoid the question by turning it become on trump. And thats given her i think a real rhetorical advantage, even as voters still have a lot of questions about her honesty, her trustworthiness, et cetera, et cetera. Dickerson another time when she pivoted from a question asked about en went back and said, these wikileaks emails are coming from the russians and the intelligence agencies have said the russians are responsible and donald trump called her out for pivoting and then answered the russian question. What did you make of. He had first half right but the second half went to embrace russia. What do you make, jeffrey, of Donald Trumps. The safe space he creates for russia when he talks about russia and the fact that the Intelligence Community say russia was involved in the kinder to him than others . Speaking of safe space, nothing triggers donald trump like a criticism of vladimir putin. Its quite remarkable to watch. We saw it the other night. This is historic and it represents a Seismic Shift in the way american politicians talk about russia. And large authoritarian countries in general. I mean, its not entirely explicable to me, but generally the pattern in american politics and American Life is we tend to side with small, democracies over authoritarian superpowers. Donald trumps sympathies seem to lie in a completely different direction. Sometimes we do that well. Sometimes we this that not well. Sometimes president s are criticized for not doing enough, ukraine and obama is an example, but this is not entirely explicable but its revolutionary. Weve had three debates. After the three of them, whats the final conclusion . The state department, about transparency, and she seems perfectly fine with that. I think they have gambled that theyre ahead by enough comfortably that thats something that can be dealt with when shes president or shell have to demonstrate through her actions that she can win back the trust of the american people. But look, if she had faith and if she faces a stronger republican candidate four years from now, should she win, its going to be very hard for her because i think a lot of the other guys who were running were ve w prosecute her day after day after day. And it would have been a very different race. She got lucky this time frankly. Dickerson lets talk about the homestretch, peggy. The debates are over. The finish line is within sight and some states are already voting. Where do you see the race right now . Is itver . People are behaving like its over . How do you feel . I feel like the surprises can happen. But i think we all agree that the trendlines suggest it will not work for mr. Trump. And youve got to keep an open mind, and you have two weeks here. But i think it looks rather difficult for him, and i think for the reasons that frank luntz really laid out. He has at the end of the day done a poor campaign. He has not talked enough about the perceived problems, the problems as they perceive them by the american people. He has talked much more and more impressively and more engagingly about his own issues with women, with the rigged media, with the rigged risk. And, you know, its. It doesnt make a good impression or leave a good taste. It should have been bigger than that. He goes the gettysburg to deliver a policy speech and the headlines that come out are complaining about the rigged election. Talking about suing women who are suing him falsely. This is the opposite of big. Hes not been able to ever stop being donald trump in that sense. Thats the fatal flaw. Whats striking about this is this is clear from the beginning. If you observe trump closely from 2015 or summer 2015 to the present, you would have predicted this exact course, but Something Like it. This is weirder than the exact course. But the general fact that trump has never been particularly interested in policy, never been particularly interested in talking about always premised his candidacy about id unique force that through himself could make everything better, and the limits of that are maybe muchore apparent than we would have thought they were. But that always been there in the trump meth message. But hes had more than a year to learn howo be a passable candidate, not a really great one with a political gift, but an adequate one, and that hasnt happened, and i wasnt sure that would be so. . I i disagree with you a little bit isolated important issues to the Republican Base that electrified this political year, and well well they will have to be worked out by the Republican Party in coming years. Im just saying that he doesnt have any of the discipline you would need to become president of the united states. Even your relatively inexperienced candidates like eisenhower have 20 years of political experience in one way, shape or another. Trump has none of them. Except f perhaps. Dickerson in our focus room, there was a lot of talk during the debate when donald trump wouldnt embrace the idea of an election outcome. In the know cuss growe talk the people who are not necessarily trump fans. This is not a big deal to me. I picked up on a lot of that, too. I think everyone there who covers this saw it as a galling and really historic moment for a candidate to say that. But i am reminded over and over again in talking to Trump Supporters and people who dont dont take him seriously. They understand that a lot of this is in their view designed to catch attention, which ts obviously did. Dickerson i think ed who was part of your focus group said ultimately hes going to come around and hes just teasing it out a little bit. Thats what a lot of people i think have thought. Others like jeffrey think its astounding and its horrifying. And i would agree, its unprecedented and really irresponsible probably of a president ial nominee to say it. But over and over again ive . . D take it seriously. Dickerson one other thing, Trump Supporters also say they want to blow up the system. They think the system has failed them some who cares if donald trump doesnt Pay Attention to the niceties of this system that fails me. New york i think this is an interesting debate about whether 70yearold people can change anyway and whether this particular 70yearold person can change. But i thought one of the truest moments of this last phase was the very large question about question, and instead he pivoted to making therg, one of the justices was mean to him. It all comes down. This is the essence of who he is. Its all about. Theres nothing else but him in this. He relates to the Supreme Court through the fact that Ruth Bader Ginsburg said something mean. That was his answer. And theres nothing that looks beyond his base in that kind of answer. Dickerson peggy, 70 of republicans in our poll think the only way donald trump is going the lof dickerson what do you make of that statistic . They think the election is being stolen . I think a most interestingly, they actually do think that if trump loses it will only be because of voter fraud. Look, the integrity of the ballot and of the voting booth as we used to say is extremely important if we ever really lose it as a country, well be losing so much it will be a dreadful trauma. There are certain issues to who might be behind a hacking of an american election. Its actually possible. So that is a problem. On top of that, look, america is a very great democracy with a long history of political mischief. You know people sometimes do things that they shouldnt be doing. Have elections ever been stoleen . My gosh, of course. But one of the things republicans should be thinking about is that each state governs its own voting reali are governed by republican governors. Most polling places are looked over by both republican and democratic stewards who are making sure everything is okay. I think this rigged thing maybe is a larger metaphor in certain areas, i understand that, but if youre saying this election is going to be stolen, boy, you better put up the evidence and put it up now. Dickerson and there is no evidence. There is evidence of fraud in swing the entire election. The most comprehensive study of inperson voter found that in one billion ballots cost between 2000 and 2013, there were 31 suspected incidents of inperson voter fraud. I think its important to see so many Republican Voters have been suspectable to this belief because mainstream republican politicians have been arguing in support of very restrictive voter ws and wisconsin that there is persistent voter fraud that influences election. When you have republican elites argue this or never challenge it, for 15 years, you cant be shocked when the president ial candidate says things like the election is rigged, that people we again the believe it. Dickerson jamelle, you have the last word there. Sorry, peggy. Hold that for next time. Thanks to all of you for being here. Well be back in a moment with a report from iraq. But even with americas help, these men fighting for their land and control of their country. Dickerson that was cbs news correspondent holly news correspondent Holly Williams. And well be right back.
