The Community Came together for a vigil. One of the most powerful moments for us was when they turned off the stadium lights and remembered by name the 14 people who lost their lives in that Inland Regional Center just down the road from where we are. It really was a very, very emotional moment. We wer in this stadium, the lights were on, people were speaking. All of the sudden they turn the lights off. All you could see were the candles that the people heas. It was a very, very emotional time because you realize that this really impacts the community. People know each other. They go by this Regional Center a lot. Didnt want their community defined by what happened her on wednesday, but they know its a long, long road back. And michael, yesterday we were listening to lieutenant mike madden, who was, i think, one of the more compelling interviews we heard yesterday. He talked about his experience and his boss said this is a guy who was born here, raised here, who went to high school here. So its like you said, these people feel very, very attached to their town. Reporter they re ally do. I have to tell you something about lieutenant madden. That press conference took place right by the Inland Regional Center, and i felt that it was very emotional for him to be talking about it so close to where it actually happed. Ewgovernor jerry brown was here. There was security, almost president ial style, secret Service Style security from california state police. But when lieutenant madden was speaking, you could just see, because he was talking about it. He could see where it happened. It was right there at the scene. Emseotional impact on him. Then he heard an explosion from the other side of that wall. He and another man who were inside that bathroom held the door closed with their feet. Another woman came from vietnam as a child as her parents and grandparents pursued the american dream. 12 of the 14 worked for the county as Health Inspectors, environmental workers who did everything from inspecting restaurants to making sure people had safe drinking water. Michael wetzel, a father of six young children, including a baby, coached kids somer. Sierra clayborn loved protecting people as a Health Inspector, her relatives said. And Nicholas Thalasinos worked as a Health Inspector and also previously. Coworkers describe him as one of the hardest working people they ever knew. He was also a devout messianic jew. His wife believes he was targeted. He never had anything bad to say about him. He believed in the jewish tradition. I feel that my husband was basically martyred. And the victims killed range in age from 26 to 60. A few of them had newborns in their lives. Either they or their spouses gave birth in the last year. Many of the wounded remain critical. She was a special Education Teacher in newark. Investigators say a gas leak caused the explosion. The First Casualty femi brown was killed when the duplex was destroyed. They were Health Workers who made sure restaurants were properly inspected, environmental work who are made sure people had safe drinking water. Michael wetzel, a father of six young children. Damian means, a health worker, played santa claus for children. Sierra claybo , relatives say she loved protecting people as a Health Inspector. And Nicholas Thalasinos worked in the health department. He also lived in jackson, new jersey, for many years. They say she spread gasoline through the hallway and in her apartment before she ignited it and caused that blast. Figueroa and a neighbor died in the flames. Eand weve learned that a second person has died from a house explosion last month in elizabeth, new jersey. The victim, 26yearold kimayh henderson, was one of the people hurt in that blast. Investigators say a gas leak caused that explosion. The First Casualty, femi brown, was killed when the duplex was destroyed. The 14 People Killed, different ages, different backgrounds, but were learning they shared a common calling, to improve their communities. They worked as county Health Inspectors, environmental specialists who did everything from making sure restaurants had proper inspections. They had to make sure people had safe drinking water. Just before 1 this morning, the victim flagged down police ofpficers in Jackson Heights dear 83rd street and 30th avenue and told the officers she was collecting cans and bottles when a man told her he had some bottles behind a house nearby. Sh ane went with him. He pulled a knife and then raped her. The man took off on a bicycle. Were now getting our first look at the man wanted for a ssible hate crime at a jewish bookstore. Police say he made antisemitic remarks to the manager. He then went outside the store. According to the victims friend, he was pacing and yelling. He went to check on him, thinking the man was in trouble. The man then, llegedly yelled he wanted to kill jews and claimed to be muslim before punching him in the head. The attacker then took off on a razor scooter. And police are investigating this as a hate crime. Theyre asking anyone who may recognize that man in the video to come forward.
