The target, the suspected mastermind of the paris terror attacks. Kerry barrett is in the newsroom with everything that happened. A lot going on. Five people arrested, two are dead. That includes a woman who was wearing an explosive suicide vest who blew herself up. [ gunfire ] [ gunfire ] so this all happened a little earlier today when heavily armed police stormed an apartment in the saintdenis suburb of paris. They were looking for the suspected mastermind of those paris attacks. Police say he was hiding there along with five other heavily armed people. By the time police were able to get in, he was gone. Live pictures right now of the scene. The raid itself lasting more than five hours. In fact, as you can see, still a lot of heavily armed police there. Theres one terrorist still holed up inside. No shooting going on right now, but theyre still trying to get that one person out. A french official says scores of police stormed the building and were met with what they described as violent resistance. Residents say there were what sounded like several large explosions and nonstop shooting and grenades for more than an hour. But this is still very much developing. We also hear that five people that includes four policemen, one civilian passerby. A lot going on right now. As soon as we get an update, well be back with more. Kerry, thank you. And bomb threats forced duoair france flights bound for paris from the United States to be diverted. One flight that took off from los angeles and was diverted to salt lake city. Another flight from Dulles Airport was diverted to halifax, nova nova scotia. The Royal Canadian police say there were no signs of an explosive that ended up there. Passengers on that flight were put up in hotels overnight. In germany, a friendly soccer match between the countrys National Team and the netherlands was canceled due to a bomb threat. Had concrete evidence of an explosives attack. Well, this morning some very direct criticism from the president defending plans to accept thousands of Syrian Refugees in the wake of the paris terror attacks. Katherine creag is on the east side. Half of the governors across the country have said that they would refuse refugees from syria. In fact, new Jersey Governor Chris Christie wrote a letter to president obama stating his opposition because of concerns about terrorism. Christie on a radio show also said he would turn away a 5yearold orphan. We also want to show you video of president obama. Just hours ago, he called the refugee debate political posturing. Were open to hearing actual ideas, but thats not really whats been going on in this debate. When candidates say we wont admit 3yearold orphans, thats political posturing. Reporter and some lawmakers have called for religious tests to happen for Syrian Refugees. Others have said they would only admit women and children. So far the u. S. Police tell me they responded to around 3 36 this morning. Were going to show you video of what has become a very active scene. Not only officers from the 84th Police Precinct but detectives kind of questioning gas station attendants nearby. Also looking for any sort of cameras that may have picked up exactly what happened. We could tell you just from looking at the scene that the victim is a male. Hes on the sidewalk here. Again, its still not clear if he was actually shot here in front of 280 bergen street or if Something Else happened. So far Police Still Investigating everything that happened here. Theyre looking for the man you see here on the surveillance video. Someone walked into the utica avenue subway station and opened fire. Two people were shot on the mezzanine level. Bam, bam, bam, bam. I said, baby, baby, theres shooting outside. It sounded like one guy. It wasnt a shootout. I was just thinking about carnage. I was in watching the attacks in paris. One of the victims is in critical condition, the other listed in serious condition. Police believe only one of the men was the intended target. Today, mayor de blasio plans to announce an ambitious new program to combat homelessness. Hes going to commit about 3 billion to the effort. 15,000 new Housing Units will be built. The program will also pair residents are social services. In some cases, medical and drug treatment programs. Meanwhile, fewer new yorkers say mayor de blasio is doing a good job. His Approval Rating is down to 44 . 11 months ago, he was at 52 . Thats according to a New York Times poll. The mayors biggest dip in numbers is from white voters. The polls show they disapprove of the mayors performance by a 21 margin. A baby pulled from a burning home in queens is in serious condition. The baby was rescued from a fire from a home on 34th street. Nobody else was hurt. The cause of the fire still under investigation. Plenty of concerns in one queens neighborhood after two homes went up in flames in just over a week. The latest fire erupted last night at a home under construction on 66th avenue and 108th street in forest hills. The raging twoalarm fire broke out shortly after a construction crew left the site. Neighboring homes were damaged, but no one was injured. A similar fire erupted in the neighborhood last sunday at another house under construction on 112th street. No one was hurt there either. It is not clear what sparked those fires or whether they are related. The disparity between the houses looks fishy to me. The nypd is coordinating with investigative authorities. Meantime in new jersey, investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fouralarm fire that tore through several homes in paterson. Theyre going to dedicate a memorial to fallen trooper westerner foster. Its going to happen in East Brunswick at the turnpike administration building. Foster was shot and killed in 1973. The convicted killer escaped from prison. She was a member of the black panthers. Shes been living in cuba. Now an update to a story weve been following. The Bergen County grand jury decided not to indict a truck driver for vehicular manslaughter in a crash that killed officer christopher goodell. The 18wheeler slammed into the officers patrol car last july. The driver is charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain a proper lane. Were now learning new details about the Small Plane Crash in queens that killed the pilot. A new report suggests james mcgee tried to use the planes emergency parachute before the aircraft plunged into the water off breezy point earlier this month. The parachute only partially deployed. It was later found separated from the rest of the plane. Mcgee died in the crash. Theres no word yet on what caused it. As promised, Yale University is introducing initiatives to increase campus diversity. Among the changes, the University Says it will create courses to address race and ethnicity. It will increase the budget for Cultural Centers on campus. It will modify its Financial Aid policy for lower income students. They promised to create a diversity plan in response to recent student demonstrations. Four people died, dozens were injured in the crash after the conductor fell asleep at the controls. A woman is in custody this morning after some very frightening moments on a British Airways flight. Authorities say the woman was drunk when she tried to force open the exit door midflight over the atlantic. The unruly passenger was restrained, handed over to police. They were waiting on the ground when that plane landed. Officials say there is no link to terrorism. The screeners at Newark Airport caught a passenger trying to smuggle this knife on top a plane by hiding it in his underwear. Police say the man stashed the twobladed knife there after he found it in a carryon bag. His weapon set off the body scanner alarm, and it was discovered when they did a patdown. A new jersey neurologist medical license has been suspended after a patient said she recorded the doctor molesting her. The woman says she went to see the doctor for weakness in her hand. During the exam, she says the doctor groped her. When she went back for another exam two weeks later, the woman says she had her cell phone camera rolling. Hes charged now with sexual misconduct. Neither his office staff nor his attorney have returned our calls for comment. This morning were learning more about an arrest in connection to a building facade collapse that killed a toddler. A private contractor is accused of certifying the building as safe without examining it. Pieces of terra cotta fell federal the building on the Upper West Side and 2yearold her grandmother was injured. Obviously theres no way to know with certainty whether she would be alive today, but what we know is there were multiple opportunities to prevent this tragedy. Officials say they found more than a thousand other buildings across the city that were overdue for investigation. Thats nearly 1500 more that were deemed ed ed unsafe but never repaired.
