Hundreds of people are forced ut of their homes in new jersey. A g massive fire destroyed an apartment building. That fire erupted late last night on gregory avenue in passaic. Firefighters from across northern new jersey rushed to e scene. Tracie strahan is there, and shes talked with some people who live in tha building. Tracie, good morning. Reporter darlene, good morning to you. Not only do passaic firefighters remain here at the scene, so, too, do Passaic Police officers. Many of them just coming here now. From what we can see, it looks lirikes theres damage to every single apartment in this fivestory building. You couldnt help but see the flames that shot out of the top of 290 gregory avenue when the fire broke out around 9 00 last night. As many as 400 people really had so scramble out of this bui ing as the flames that started near e broadway side spread across the whole structure. There are 60 apartments inside ofz this building. Right now it looks like the building itself is a total loss. Total loss. Total loss. And we dont know right now how it started. Everything y h acquired over the years. It hasnt even hit me yet. Is is my first experience. You know, posttraumatic stress, it might come later. Reporte anr one firefighter was injured when a piece of the ceiling fell on him. Anothemer suffered burns to o neck. Both injuries are said to be minor. We spoke to residents who said they usually do hear smoke alarms, but theyre false alarms. Many of them saying last n anight they didnt hear any smoke ulalarms. Late last night, the suspect accused of shooting and killing nypd officer randolph holder went before a judge. At his arraignment late last night, Tyrone Howard faced ndreds of erpolicemen and women in; that courtroom but also some family memberst f the office h hes accused of fatally shooting, officer holder. His accused kill ter has been described as a career criminal who should not have been on the streets, according to the Police Commissioner and the mayor. Howard had been convict the ten times and arrested 16 times in the past he had been in whats called a Diversion Program to avoid jail time. Regarding that, mayor de blasio said this. The perpetrator involved here wad s obviously a hardened, violent criminal and hould not have been on the streets. Reporter as the case against the suspect starts to build, one police chief put it this way, that theres numerous video evidence, witnesses, physical evidence, dna evidence that investigators have been co ing through to establish a case with thte manhattan district attorneysroffice. Their focus today is going to be before the attack. Theyve got new information that the other groups did not have. About 8,000 pages of emails that the state Department Just released. Not Hillary Clintons emails. These were emails from ambassador chris stevens. They want to know what clinton knew or what she should have known about his request or more security before this attack ever happened. They want to know why clinton wa ans pushing to go into riskier areas like this, spreading diplomacy into those areas, and were there any warning signs she should have been aware of. According to what weve been told, and shes been really holed up all week studying for this, she will push for more diplomacy in risky areas despite the concerns and will also say that Congress Needs to fund a Training Facility for Diplomatic Security that she had been pushing for as secretary of state. Our own polls show 44 of americans arent satisfied with her answer and more than a third, michael, think this committee has been partisan and unfair and thats what democrats and the Clinton Campaign had been alleging based n comments made publicly, that theyre m e so going after her as opposed to trying to find out what happened in benghazi. And the Committee Members have come out saying, were not specifically going after former secretary clinton, were trying to find the facts of what ouhappened t reporter some of them have. Firefighters from across northern new jersey rushed to the scene. Tracie strahan is here with the latest. Reporter to show you how severe this was at its height, it was an eightalarm fire that continued to add alarm after alarm to try and get help from ten neighboring departments. In the height of this, it was so smoldering and so destructive, two firefighters were injured. The flames shot right out of the top at 290 gregory avenue around 9 00 last night. As many as 400 people from the 60 apartments inside had to scramble to safety. Most of the roof collapsed from this fivestory brick building. A resident we ran into this morning says she had to take shelter inside of her car that was parked right across the street. Says she was only able to get out because of screams from her neighbors. The smoke alarm didnt sound. Just the people running, going crazy. So i went back in, i got my cat. You see im in pajamas, but i lost everything too. But not my life, so im blessed. Reporter one firefighter was injured when a piece of the ceiling from the building fell on him. Another reportedly suffered burns to his neck. Both of them are said to be minor injuries. Lets bring you back live now to gregory avenue. Weve been looking at the top floor of this building. You can see many of the windows have been shattered. This started out with a couple bouquets of flowers, candles. Now you see how its grown. You see some of the photos of officer holder. We want to show you the arraignment that took place last night with Tyrone Howard, the suspect facing hundreds of policemen and women but also family members of the officer hes accused of fatally shooting. Officer holder. The officers accused killer has been described as a career criminal who should not have been on the streets according to the Police Commissioner and the mayor. Howard had been convicted ten times and arrested 16 times in the past. Hed been in whats called a Diversion Program to avoid jail time. As the case against the suspect starts to build, a police chief said this. Theres numerous video evidence, witnesses, physical evidence, dna evidence that were combing through. Reporter and the 30yearold suspect has a criminal record dating back to when he was a teenager. News 4 investigated and found out while in jail this past january, he tested positive for drugs. Residents and local leaders said prayers last night outside the east harlem station house where officer holder worked. At his familys home in far rockaway, mayor de blasio and Police Commissioner bratton paid their respects to holders father. He said his son was determined to serve the community. He always wanted to be a policeman. That he did. He delivers duties diligently, with pride. A wake will be held for officer holder next tuesday in far rockaway. His funeral will be held on wednesday. This morning weve learned that it did injure two firefighters. We have cell phone video of the flames shooting out of the top of this fivestory building when it erupted around 9 00 last night. It was an eightalarm fire because they needed aid from ar least ten different Fire Departments in this area. As many as 400 people from 60 apartments here had to get themselves to safety when the fire started near the broadway side and spread across the entire structure. Total loss. And we dont know right now how it started. But its a shame toplose everything that you acquired over the years. It hasnt even hit me yet. This is my first experience. You know, posttraumatic stress. Officer randolph holders accused killer has been described as a career criminal who should not have been on the streets. Howard had p been convicted ten times and arrested 16 times in the past. Earlier this year after an arwirest for. Selling crack cocaine, a judge allowed him to enter a drug Diversion Program to avoid jail. As for Police Commissioner bratton, he criticized that lenient move. Of officer holder as he made remarks at the police academy.
