And probably after 10 00 a. M. We start to see the rain and snow breaking out. Temperatures will be important today. Were at 38 in the city. Thats good news. The roads are warm. A lot of melting will be happening throughout the day. 24 in sussex, 25 in morristown. Thats where you have to look places like hunterton county, thats where you have advisories in effect. This is a rain snow mix. A lot of melting on the roadways. Mainly on the grass, 1 inch possible. Maybe up to an inch in the city. Youre going to see those south and west of town. No snow yet right now. Rain and snow arriving by lunchtime. It continues the mix by afternoon. Windchills in the 20s throughout much of today. Bundle up. The man awoke to the suspect hovering over him demanding money. Was slashed on his neck, face, and hands. Fire investigators will be back on the scene in new jersey this morning where six firefighters were injured in a mass iblaze there. Fanned by winds off the ocean. Then total chaos when part of the building came crashing down. Michael george has the story from keyport on what may have started the fire. We have guys down. May day. Reporter a worst case scenario. Firefighters inside this building when suddenly it collapses. May day, may day, may day. Pretty intense. Flames were pretty high. Reporter heres the collapse from a different angle. Six firefighters were injured battling this fire. But thankfully theyre all expected to survive. Buildings in downtown keyport. Dozens of firefighters attacked the flames from the ground and from above. Were up here on the third floor of a nearby building and this has not been an easy fire to fight. Over the course of several hours, hot spots keep flaring up. You can see the flames over there pop up again and again. Thats made things difficult for firefighters. Bob deronda was inside the building when the fire started. He told us a roofer may have accidentally sparked it. He came in looking for a fire extinguisher. Our building is totaled. Reporter investigators havent determined what the exact cost was. People here are just grateful the fire was contained before it destroyed all of downtown keyport. A couple firefighters were injured. I hope theyre okay. But they did a great job of keeping that from spreading to downtown. Reporter michael george, today in new york. Police in the bronx is has been scaling fire escapes to break into apartments. Hes allegedly broken into two apartments using fire escapes during the daytime. It happened on december 1st and 2nd. Hes accused of stealing sneakers, playstation, jewelry, and car keys. New this morning, police have arrested a man wanted for robbing more than a dozen businesses from across the city. This is the man August Watkins who hit several gas stations and subway restaurants, a dunkin donuts, and a rite aid. And in all some 16 locations were hit between the 26th of march and the 5th of april according to police. Watkins hit sometimes two or three stores in a day. Fortunately nobody was hurt in any of those robberies. Police and a worried family are desperate to find a missing Nassau County teenager. Amari young has been missing now for a week. Police and his family say he has left with just a few items of clothing, no money, and no phone. His mother is pleading for his return. Just come home. Whatever it is that, you know, you have going on personally, mommys here for you. You know . And she just want to talk to you. She wants to know that youre okay. Heart breaking. Police say there have been sightings of amari near his middle school and at a park near his home. Police have also looked for him at his biological fathers home. If you know anything, call police. Two years ago we had developed a graphic novel to educate workers on how to keep track of their work, what to do in case they were victims of wage theft. Which is common in the day laborer community. They loved that little booklet and decided how to take it a step further. Now, smartphone apps are common amongst day laborers. Their phones. Facebook is popular meteorologist them as well. They decided to develop an app. Tell me what the features are. I understand we have screen grabs of some of the images. Theyll be able to use it on a daily basis to document the hours they work, who theyre working for. What they agreed on with the employers. And theyll be able to register all in spanish as you see there. All in spanish. Theyll be able to document all this Important Information to keep track of how much theyre earning. And in case theyre victims of wage theft, theyll have this information ready to submit. There you see also about their rights, what they are in case they do work and dont get paid. Obviously the concern is about confidentiality and identification. Some of these may be undocumented workers. So how do you protect that . So were in the pilot phase of the app. It out, see how the workers are using it. A really important part is making sure that the information is kept safe. So thats why the worker needs to register with the worker center. In this case were piloting the program. We serve the largest population of day laborers in the city. What information do they have . We keep that Information Safe and theyll have an id to download the application. So it doesnt have a name. Its more like an id, internal id. And tell me about your plans to expand. Yeah. Weve attracted a lot of attention from many different cities. Other day laborer centers. Were partnering with a National Group to launch it nationally. So after weve developed it here in queens, its going to go to l. A. Where theyre going to start using it, piloting it, and then itll go to other cities across the states. And they have a patch of kittens and we see a lot of them. Right now the animal care and control is filled with kittens. Already. And our shelters in Staten Island and brooklyn. We have a wide range of cats available right now. But people can help. Number one, we first ask that they educate their friends with cats to spay and neuter their cats. And to keep them inside. And then secondly, we ask that they volunteer and help us out with all these kittens. If they could just go its easy process. You go up to the acc website, fill out the form. Theres an orientation once a month. We can place you with kittens or cats for you to take care of for three days, three months, whatever you can do. To be a foster parent. Thats right. You said there is a process, an orientation. Yes. A monthly orientation. Its easy. We work with you and your schedule. Volunteers for all these kittens. If you see a bunch of kittens and theyre unsupervised by their mother and their eyes arent open yet, that means that the mother is off looking for food. But they really need your help. So what we ask that you do is wait for the mother to return. She will come back within an hour or two with food, hopefully were for her kittens. And if shes friendly ideally you bring them into the acc or home and care for them until the kittens can be put up for adoption. If the mother is not friendly, which can happen, we have these little cages that are humane trap cages for cats. And you can get them at any of your shelters. Put it by the kittens.
