Jagged edges of the tree that remain. And you have to imagine its as large as the rest of the trees here. Thats all of that portion of the tree trunk that came crashing down into an area where there were chairs, umbrellas, people were sitting, packed here in the section of brian park on this Labor Day Weekend. We want to take you to video of what it looked like moments after the tree came down. One person was actually pinned to the ground by a portion of that tree. Ex we saw one person being taken away by ambulance, being taken away on a stretcher, and witnesses describe a chaotic scene of people running away, screaming. Some people running toward the scene to figure out what had happened. They say at one point i sounded so loud, some of them thought it may have been an explosion. We saw a woman pinned under this chair, with that branch literally on top of her. I was looking to see if she was bleeding. I didnt see any blood, but the surprise made us just realize, you never know how fortunate or unfortunate you could be sitting down in the park. All she was doing is walking by and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Reporter and this section of the park here near 40th street between 5th and 6th cordoned off. We dont want anyone walking just to be safe. Five people hurt, but with minor injuries. In brian park, checkey beckford, news 4 new york. Silver lining there, checkey. Thank you. There was a scare during a u. S. Open match in Louie Armstrong stadium last night. A drone flew into the stadium and crashed into an empty section of seats. A new york city teacher was arrested and charged with reckless operation of a drone and flying in an unauthorized area. No one got hurt, but police and stadium security stopped the match to inspect the device, and it underscores the potential dangers they can pose to the public. News 4s andrew siff is joining us now with more. To andrew . Reporter sibilia, a lot of people talking about this. They are unmanned aircraft, sort of like a mini helicopter controlled by a robot. It sounds ver cool. Theyre hightech, very popular. But also banned in parts of the ty. And one local lawmaker wants to make them illegal citywide. Last nights incident at the u. S. Open is exhibit a. When the drone fell, tennis fans noticed the swarm of police. When it landed, they weee checking it out to see if it r had a bomb or something. Thats a little scary. Reporter it turned out to be a harmless toy, but drones are now seemingly everywhere. Reporter city councilman dan ga radnick said a future drone may not be harmless. So hes proposed an outright ban in new york city. The reason . Our Police Department only has two tools to be able to deal with a drone that is in the wrong place at the wrong time. That is either to ask somebody to bring it down, or to shoot at it. We can monitor it, but i wouldnt say ban it. Reporter new yorkers at the u. S. Open told me drones shouldnt be illegal. I think its really gone too far, especially when you think about the usage of it by photographers, the media. Reporter but you might be su lrprised to learn drones, which have skyrocketed in popularity for research, and recreation, are already banned in most of new york city. Because theyre flying too close to an airport. That violates an faa regulation. We say know before you fly. Its important you understand where youre operating and whether or not there might be manned operations that of course you wouldnt want to be interfering with. Reporter but senator Chuck Schumer says the feds havent done enough. Hes been calling for an electronic fence, better known as a drone zone. You build into the Software Program of the drone. A program that says they cant fly near airports. They cant fly near very, very difficult areas like the u. S. Open, like the pentagon. And they cant fly above 500 feet. Reporter there is also, of course, heightened concern with the pope arriving in new york in a couple weeks. The city council has no plans to fast track that drone ban proposal, but the nypd already has the authority to take them away, citing a longstanding administrative code. David . Andrew siff reporting. Thank you. Weve got an update on a controversy connected to the Football Program at a local high school. The principal at susan e. And now an update on that small plane that crashed behind a swim club in Bergen County. More about what happened in the minutes before the pilot was forced to make the crash landing. Pat battle is live at the scene where the plane was just removed. Pat . Reporter sibilia, that plane was hauled out of here just about 15 minutes ago. Its been an allday effort. Investigators from the Bergen CountySheriffs Office local detectives and the faa spent the better part of this day going over the wreckage with our proverbial finetooth comb. Of particular interest, we are told by sources, two wires that appeared, and i emphasize appeared to have been cut to the planes engine. We wont know the significance of that until the outcome of this investigation. Fortunately, both pilots survived and as the plane was being hauled away, detectives were interviewing one of them at a local hospital. 24 hours almost to the minute that it went down. The single engine cessna sky hawk lifted on to a flatbed truck, which will tow it to a hangar in maryland for further inspection. Meanwhile, the coast guard identified the two pilots who made this Emergency Landing as eric pearson and Jack Rosenberg, pictured here, standing alongside what appears to be the same small plane that went down thursday evening in a bank of trees on the edge of the soccer field. Thankfully, they both got out ok ay and theyre both alive. Thats the main thing. And the time it happened, no kids on the field. So everything the way it had to happen is the best way it happened. Reporter the two men were volunteers with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, whose prime marry role is boating safety. But they provide search and rescue and marine safety. They use private aircraft like the cessna that went down on this otherwise routine patrol. Both men were conscious but had serious injuries. Rosenberg reportedly broke both legs and was in surgery for nine hor. S. That word from brooklyn aassemblyman who has known the pilot, a father of seven for years. He has long gone out of his way to help anyone in need. What happened last night was nothing short of miraculous, and is a testament to the skill and dedication of rosenberg and his co pilot. The two were flying a Mapping Mission over the hudson river north of ft. Lee. As the engine failed, they headed west, ini sally planning to put the aircraft down in tenafly, but there were too many people about. A soccer field and nearby crest hill was the only option. Thank god nobody was hurt. The pilots will recovery. We averted a tragedy. Reporter Jack Rosenberg has been with the Coast Guard Auxiliary since 2005, his co pilot since 2010. You said recently that using your personal email while you were secretary of state was not the best choice and that you take responsibility. Are you sorry . Well, i certainly wish that i had made a different choice, and i know why the American People have questions about it. But in retrospect it certainly would have been better. I take responsibility. I should have had two accounts, one for personal and one for workrelated. But this has created what even your own Campaign Manager said are some headwinds. A lot of noise out there. Are you sorry . Do you want to apologize to the American People for the choice you made . It wasnt the best choice. People in the government knew i was using a personal account.
