Creative businesses, Creative Workers like the ones that created wmurs logo, those businesses have a in excess of 113 Million Dollars. In New Hampshire. In New Hampshire. Wow, and businesses, joan. Businesses are becoming more aware of their Creative Economy because it fits into what theyre trying to do to brand themselves, position, right . Exactly. And also that i mean, i think that many of the Business Leaders that i deal with and that jenny keys are ones that believe that the arts are fundamental to our states economy and to the culture of the state. In a sense, where the quality of life is tied to the arts and culture into the community as much as anything else. Yes, that was one of the things i was struck with when i moved to nom, the direct relationship between community, life and culture and many have municipal opera houses and there are performance spaces in town halls. From the very beginning of this state. Our forebearers to everyday life and importance of making sure that everybody could access it. Whats the Multiplier Effect, joan of the arts and culture of New Hampshire in terms of the economy generally speaking. 15, 16, 28 , what is it . Probably about 28 . 28 , right, right. Wow, thats significant. It is, well, because you think, when you think of going when you go to the theater do you go out to dinner first, often. And i wont tell you where to go to dinner, but its really good though. Ok. Now, lets show the value added to the United States gdp by sector and here it is. And it is significant. The sector, look at arts and culture. Its the third bar down. Retail trade and health care and social assistance. That is stunning. And thats a national figure. Yeah. 4 of the Gross Domestic Product is arts and culture. Who would have thought . Who would have thought . Yeah, but there it is, there it is. That is significant and thats another graphic. Lets put this up. This is top arts and culture businesses, again, this is a National Listing of broadcasting culture, performing arts and that includes independent artists are advertising. Out of those categories for New Hampshire, what would be the ones most prominent. I think that performing arts is big in New Hampshire and the visual arts, very big as well. We have a large, large number of independent visual artists working today. Some are collected with the league of New Hampshire craftsmen or their painting in the w a huge Literary Community in New Hampshire. Fred in ten seconds, joan, if you were the next governor of New Hampshire, what would you do to enhance the arts in New Hampshire. Well, you know, when you showcase the arts to people, they get it. You know . They see something really great. The other thing is that, i mean, i meet with people who will say, oh, i dont of any creative things, you know, i dont know about the arts or whatever and you Start Talking and realize that encompassing feeling of the creativity is the way i would put that is something that they understand. And if you were governor youd promote that . I would definitely. Joan, the committee for the arts, thank you. And jenny, thank you for the New Hampshire state council for the arts, thank you. A message in a bottle sent out to sea more than five decades ago is back where the journey began this morning. Wmurs jean mackin shows us the priceless message that was the long lost message was discovered 1500 miles from home by a man vacationing in the turks and caicos, he knew there was something about that bottle. This coke bottle about halfway buried in sand and, i mean, just looked like it had been there since the beginning of time. On paper there was something in pen sell like handwriting. Look inside. Clint broke open the bottle and unrolled that waterlogged note. C return, and beachcomer. He used the soggy words to search for the sender and the story. It turns out it was written by paula pierces father, probably more than 50 years ago. And it just hit me it was my fathers writing. I was shocked. Her father and mother bought the beachcomer in 1960 and he wrote a joke and cast it into 419 ocean boulevard and receive a reward of 150 from tina, owner of the beach comer. Paulas parents are both gone now. Thats tina. The beachcomer sold a couple of years ago and now clint has flown to New Hampshire to deliver the message in a bottle. This is very special because it brings back a piece of him, a piece of her, a piece of my childhood, a piece of the beachcomer all of those things. She insisted o her fathers promise giving clint that reward. So you returned it and you have to take it. I have to take it. You have to take it. But the biggest reward is the message in a bottle, finding its way back home. The significance of the bottle was not lost on him. It took him to find it and it took him to come across the country to bring it to me. In manchester, jean mackin, wmur news 9. The young man you see here making this tackle twice. I think i was about 12 years old, yeah, playing baseball and i had a knee injury. Its a tough thing to go through, but with a little support and someone showing that youre worth it and they care about you, that goes a long way. Right around the time that travis moved from pills to heroin, the state of New Hampshire was hitting rock bottom, too, in terms of the money it dedicated in fighting addiction. There was a tremendous reduction in funding. I remember, there was ail Treatment Services that was already anemic amount of Resources Available for the services. Joe harding of the bureau of drug and Alcohol Services says that funding for prevention was cut off completely. The battle for opioid abuse had begun, the funding some money is flowing toward the projects there will be 488 drug deaths this year, about 50 more than last year. And cities and towns continue to struggle. Rochester, for example, has seen a 160 increase in Overdose Deaths so far this year. Even the number of people that are being administered in the zone, the number of Overdose Deaths in the state compared to the rate, you know, it going down in certain areas. But state officials and those on the front lines of this fight say there will never be a Mission Accomplished moment when it comes to the opioid crisis. Only frank guinta will put New Hampshire first. Thats the key difference in this race. Frank guinta. Hes on our side. Im frank guinta now, meteorologist josh judge with your storm watch 9 forecast. Josh were starting off in the 40s. Not bad for the second to the last day in october. Its a fairly mild start to our as we head through the day today well see the chance of showers for some, but thats not until later today. Average high is mid 50s for today and thats where we will be in a lot of places, maybe even higher in a couple of spots. And your high and low tides coming up on high tide at 11 54 this morning. Low tide 6 27 this evening. A look at the clouds, the thickest passed through early this morning and now the clouds are level clouds and some fog in some locations and so those areas if youre stuck in that may take longer, but otherwise, weve got breaks of sunshine that will be developing going back and forth for a while today until this, this disturbance, moving through the jetstream here headed toward us for later today. As you can see, its all the way out in the great lakes right in our. It takes a while to get here, but once it does, the showers will be around the southern half of the state. The southern third of the state region a decent chance and you can have it reach that far north as well. Warmer air has moved into a good portion of the United States and will continue to surge in our direction, especially by the time we get to about mid week. Until then, were about average and go above average on wednesday and probably into thursday as well. A closeup look showing breaks in the clouds and plenty of clouds as well. Its a back and forth type scenario today with showers arriving later today as we afternoon. And well see them move in. You can see the southern parts of the state are where we can see most of the rain anyway, and a couple of downpours of possibility in some spots, notice how its up to concord on this map and a lot of our computer models push it farther north, frankly, theres a decent chance, in the upper valley and showers indicated, too, not indicated on futurecast. Futurecast, this is a computer model as well. The showers moving out during the evening hours, and then we start to dry out overnight, some fog and clouds, maybe early tomorrow morning, but theyre gone just like that, and lots of sunshine on the way for tomorrow, although, cooler air spilling in, means temperatures level out around 50 degrees for tomorrow, but halloween does look like a nice, clear day and then partly sunny skies are on the way for tuesday. So, for today, there you go, 50s in southern New Hampshire. About 50 init 40s to the north and chillier tonight and then tomorrow for halloween, look at that, the temperatures as i mentioned, either side of 50 degrees, here is a timeline for trickortreating as we go through the trickortreating hours of tomorrow evening and as you can see there, they will be falling from the 40s and into the 30s. So, on average, were talking about temperatures starting off, in the 40s and southern New Hampshire and the 30s in northern New Hampshire and then falling from there. Here is your extended forecast, wednesday and thursday, as i the week thursday afternoon, some showers will be pulling in, the next chance of rain after today. Thanks, josh. Absolutely. Clint buffington, a musician and teacher opened the bottle js i he researched it and it was written more than 50 years ago. It was my fathers writing. I was shocked. Her mother and father bought the beachcomer in 1960, and he wrote a joke and tossed it into the atlantic city. Return it to receive 150. Thats tetina. The beachcomer was told a few years ago. This is very special because it brings back a piece of him, her, my childhood and the beach comer, all of those things were hard to lose. And she lived up to her fathers promise, with the reward. Maggie hassan helped energize our economy by focusing on families, innovation and education. The same approach maggie will take as us senator a detailed plan to make college more affordable. Lower cost prescription drugs for everyday families. And an approach to leadership that puts New Hampshire families and Small Businesses ahead of the corporate special interests. Thats Maggie Hassan. Always has been. Always will be. Im Maggie Hassan joanne shes not fooling me. Britt kelly ayotte sides with the special interests. Vivian now, shes even playing politic games with medicare. Vo kelly ayotte voted to cut medicare and cost seniors up to 1,700 more for prescriptions. While protecting tax breaks for the wall street banks and Big Oil Companies that fund her campaign. Fred kelly ayotte sold us out. Britt with kelly ayotte, its all politics. Joanne shes not looking out for New Hampshire anymore. Welcome to New Hampshires business, im fred kocher. Here is a map of New Hampshire and see the colored dots on this map. Well, those are businesses, thousands of them, and they are arts and culture businesses in the state of New Hampshire. Now, here are some of the stats. New hampshires Creative Economy, 3,305 arts related employed, 115 million spent by arts and culture groups and 62. 1 million spent by their audiences. With me to talk about this are people who live with this every day of the week. The director of the New Hampshire state council for the arts. Welcome. Nice to be here. And the director of the Business Committee of the arts, welcome. Nice to be here freddie if he had ive done this show for 23 years and theatergoer, but i was astounded by the numbers. I would assume that the general public doesnt know of the impact we just put up on the screen. I think youre absolutely right. That 115 Million Dollars in direct spending is for nonprofit organizations and their audiences. Thats just nonprofits, on the for profit side, creative businesses, Creative Workers like the ones that created annual receipts in excess of 113 Million Dollars. In New Hampshire. In New Hampshire. Wow. And businesses, joan, businesses are becoming more aware of the Creative Economy because it fits into what theyre trying to do to brand themselves, for instance, right . Exactly. And also, i think that many of the Business Leaders that i deal with and that jenny sees, are ones that believe that the arts are fundamental to our states economy and to the hampshire and this is historic in a sense, where the quality of life is tied to the arts and culture and to the community as much as anything else, right . Yeah, and thats one of the things that i was struck with when i moved to New Hampshire, is that direct relationship between Community Life and arts and culture. So many communities have municipal opera houses and perform spaces in town halls, importance of arts and culture to everyday life and the importance of making sure that everybody could access it. Whats the Multiplier Effect, joan, of the arts and culture of New Hampshire. Whats the Multiplier Effect in terms of the economy just generally speaking . 15, 16, 28 , what is it . Its probably, probably about 28 . Fred 28 . Wow. It is, well, its because you think, when you think of going when you go to the theater do you go out t often . Yes. Ok, theres a piece right there, thats a Multiplier Effect. I think its very important to consider its not just buying the ticket, but everything that happens around that ticket. Fred i wont tell you where i go to dinner, but its really good though. Ok, now, lets show the value added to the United States gdp by sector and here it is. And its significant. The sector look at arts and culture, its 698. 7 billion right after retail, trade and health care and social assistance. That is stunning and thats a national figure. Yeah, 4 of the Gross Domestic Product is arts and culture. Who would have thought . Who would have thought. There it is. There it is. Thats significant and another graphic, lets put that up. This is top arts and culture businesses and again, this is a National Listing of broadcasting, Motion Pictures and video publishing, retail for arts and culture, performing arts and that includes independent artists advertising. Out of the categories for New Hampshire with what are the ones most prominent. I think that performing arts is for New Hampshire and the visual arts are very big as well. We have a large, large number of visual artists, some are masters, painting in the white mountains. Dont forget the writers. Thats right. And joan, if you were governor, the next governor of New Hampshire, what would you do to enhance the arts in New Hampshire . Well, you know, when you showcase the arts to people, they get it, you know . They see something really great and the other thing is that, i mean, i meet with people who will say, oh, i dont have any creative things, you know, i dont know about the arts or and sometimes i do this or that and this encompassing feeling of creativity is the way i would put that is something that they understand. And if you were governor youd promote that. I would definitely. Ok. Joan, is the director for the Business Community for the arts, thank you. And the state counsel of the arts, thank you. Thank you. If you missed part of the interview go to wmur. Com and go up on the lefthand corner of the new website where menu is, and then scroll down to where it says money and there you will find the New Hampshire business video. Now, meteorologist josh judge with your storm watch 9 forecast. Josh interprets between 40 and 50 degrees as we start off your sunday on the mild side. Not too bad out there. Most of it from the lakes region southward and lakes region youre on the crust p and you could see a couple of showers miss you, its going to be that close. Moving into vermont, maybe 2 00, 3 00, anytime between 3 00 and 5 00 or 3 00 and 6 00, depending on location, the showers could rolling into southern New Hampshire. Notice how high up this goes, how far north. Some of this is happening farther north than that. And i think its a real, real good shot. New hampshire you see showers out of this, too. It goes farther north, so that youre on board with that and then the showers will pull away during the evening hours and some places have trickortreating between 5 00 and 8 00.
