Americans work hard, and pay into it. So our next president needs a real plan to keep it strong. elephant noise welcome to New Hampshires business, im fred kocher. New hampshire is one of the oldest states in the country, median age of our population is just north of 41, but thats affecting one particular business in New Hampshire, namely hospitals. Well get to that in just a minute. Let me tell you about the aging of New Hampshire, here it is. Looming geriatric tsunami, reaching peak in 2020. And one third of our population by 2030. The trend will affect the Health Care Center the most. And only so many beds for geriatric care. And preparing for the tsunami of geriatric car and partnering with dartmouth Hitchcock Elliott systems, and with me is the ceo of frisbee hospital, john, welcome. Thank you. Nice to have you here. You were quoted in New Hampshire magazine you see a tsunami of geriatric care coming our way. Starting in 2011, 10,000 americans turn 65. That trend is going to continue through 2018. 30 of those americans are going to have some form of dementia. In the state of New Hampshire, as you mentioned, we now have 50 beds, 20 of them are at frisbee. We started the geriatric psych unit and if you think youre going to manage that population with that patient base. Its a skillset needed. What are you doing to prepare for this. I know you want to be a leader in this geriatric area. Absolutely. We employ three geriatric decisions, in the country last year, there were only 52 geriatric psych positions that came out of residency in the country and we have three fulltime physicians, we have two mid levels to deal with we adopted that program as one of the strengths of the hospital knowing that the population is only going to get older. Whats happening in the rest of New Hampshire with the other parts of the Health Care System . Are they gearing up for the same thing . Not really. Theres only two other hospitals right now that have geriatric psych beds. When you look at the families today, dealing with younger kids, and now they have mom and dad in the house as well. And there are very minimal resources to help familys adapt to the geriatric population. Youre seeing an increase in geriatric care right at your own hospital. Absolutely. Going up year by year. Yes. One of the things youve done also, is collaborate and youve collaborated. And in a new health care company. What led to that collaboration benvera is a Health Management company, its not an insurance product. Its to help manage the higher utilizers of health care and the key to it is that were going to be doing extensive Data Analysis and doing projected Health Analytics so well be able to identify patients going through, who need Significant Health Care Services before the illness even develops. Before it develops . Thats correct. Thats significant. Very significant. Thats a real change. Yes, it is. Now, one. Things youre doing outside of the hospital which i think is fascinating and this goes to education, you are mentoring students at Spaulding High School in rochester to develop a medical mentoring program to teach the students about the jobs and skills you need at your hospital. Just talk about that. Exactly. One of the nurses we have in that up and her daughter is one of those students. Its like a city in itself. And students they dont know what health care requirements are, what skill sets may be needed to sell a career in the Health Care Systems. So, were setting up a program where the students actually come in, they will be teamed with employees, spend a day or two or longer in the Department Working side by side, and were not just looking at raidographers, sonographers. Were looking for biotechnicians and a person to be in a facility of this type. That goes to work for us in that state as well. And john from frisbee memorial, nice to have you here. Thank you. If you want to see this part of the interview wmur. Com, click on news and click on project economy. Forecast. Its a foggy place out there, lots of places like the seacoast, less than a mile of visibility in some parts of the state right now. Theres drizzle and fog and right now, light rain in a few spots. But the heavier rain has not arrived and its getting close. In some parts of the state, 41 in whitefield. Higher elevations sewing the milder temperatures first as it streams in. And well all see warm conditions through the day. There is your visibilities around the state. Lower visibility because of the fog. The fog will start to disperse and break up as the rain and also the wind come in, both of those things will act to break up that fog. So its not an allday thing, but certainly for the next couple of hours, beware is youre heading out. They will pick up and get strong at times later this morning and particularly during the afternoon hours. Its cloudy and theres drizzle and mist and fog, but the heaviest rain is just to our and it will provide a period of time where the rain comes down and at times it comes down quite heavily, in fact. And we could see anywhere from one to two inches in the state. The cold front you see pulls through and drives out the warm air and chillier air moves in for the entire upcoming week. Watch the temperatures rising into the 40s by lunchtime, well into the 40s and the rain coming down heavy at times as well. As we go through the afternoon, were hitting 50 in some spots in southern New Hampshire and also getting some heavy rain and wind at the same time. That lifts away from south to north during the evening hours and the rain tapers off and we start drying out overnight and temperatures cool down tomorrow, going through the day. Highs in the 20s and 30s and snow showers will be around at times in the mountains. So, lets take a look what to expect for today. Upper 40s and lower 50s for the highs again today and that times and the wind could be gussing as high as 30 to even 50, to 60 Miles Per Hour a the at the coast. Tonight, that cold front comes through and chills things down. A difference for tomorrow. Upper 20s and lower 30s and windy, not nearly as windy as today. Of course, for some. Some snow showers in the mountains and lake effect from ontario could drift all the way to western New Hampshire tomorrow. Look at the week ahead after the warm temperatures today. It chills down and stays that way. Temperatures right around average for this is the first long stretch of average temperatures so you will be able to cool down, ski areas will be cranking up and thats the way week. That trend is going to continue through 2018. 30 of those americans are going yeah. In the state of New Hampshire, as you mentioned, we now have 50 beds. 20 of them are at frisbee. We started the geriatric psych unit in 1984, and if you think that youre going to be able to look at the patient base, its a very different skillset needed to manage that. Amy what are you doing to make, to prepare for the tsunami particularly because i know you want to be a leader in it geriatric area. Absolutely. We employ three geriatric physicians. In the country last year, there physicians, we have two mid levels to deal with this, we have a strong outpatient program. And moderately heavy batch of them moving through the rochester, portsmouth area and concord on the eastern side here and southern New Hampshire, its been heavier, you see some of the yellows and oranges pushing up into parts of southern New Hampshire. These are areas where its raining the heaviest and theres heavier rain to go. The heaviest batches mid day and the afternoon. At least the heaviest rain and then scattered showers for tonight. Notice the system, see the counter clockwise spinning . It does a couple of things. If youre on the east side of it, because of the wind its now. But the other side is a bringing down cold air and you can see some snow. Now, the center of this low moves up to the north. We dont see any snow out of it tonight, but you can see on the other side of that system, much, much colder air and thats what pushes in here for tomorrow and the entire upcoming week, so a big time change in our temperatures after today. So, lots of change in the Weather Department to tell you about. First of all, well take the rain showers and bring them up from south to north all day long. Heavy batches of them at times.
