Sean gun control was one of the issues tackled by the president ial candidates in the debate, you saw from st. Anselm college. Amy there was plenty of time for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin Omalley to raise. Those were heated during the threehour debate, but the candidates agreed on several things and saved their harshest words for the republican front runner, donald trump. Right away, they addressed the data breach. There was a breach because the dnc vendor screwed up. Information came to our campaign. In this case, our staff the wrong thing. Obviously, we were distressed when we learned of it because now that i think, you know, weve resolved your data, weve agreed on an independent inquiry, we should move on. The candidates took turns attacking republican front runner donald trump. Martin omalley related a story to him by a muslim friend putting his kids to bed. One of his little boys said to him, dad, what happens if donald trump wins and we have to move out of our home. Mr. Trump has a great capacity to use bluster and bigotry to inflame people and make them think there are easy answers to question complex questions. The mexicans theyre criminals and rapists, hate the mexicans those are your enemies. We have to late the hate the muslims, and the rich and off is she wrong . Necessary. We need to be the nation whose enduring issue is the stat true of liberty. Well take a look at other topics coming up in three minutes. Ray brewer, wmur news 9. Media packed the spin room as we spoke with representatives from the party to get their take on how the candidates performed. I think it was fantastic. You heard a real message of positive and hope from all three candidates i think addresses the hampshire. When you compare that to what so much fear mongering and ugliness and yelling at each other and you saw three adults on the stage. They stood with a stark contrast, the substantive issues important to americans, talked about their vision how they would continue to build on the economic success they had and help the americans reach the middle class and access to people who simply want to get education thats affordable. In manchester, Kristen Carosa, wmur news 9. One topic there was during the debate. The heroin epidemic and how to combat it. Opioids being prescribed, and when somebody is ready to get help, theres a place for them to go and every Law Enforcement should carry the antidote to overdose. The best place to intervene, the indicator when a person is on verge of killing themselves because of addiction is at the hospital. That very first time they show up with a near miss, we should be intervening there. According to the office of the chief medical examiner, there have been 292 deadly opioid overdoses in New Hampshire so far. We assembled a panel from across New Hampshire to watch the debate. Some walked away with a clearer picture who they would be supporting, they all m insight into the candidates. They appreciated hearing issues close to New Hampshires issue in the state. Hillary clinton has been answering all the questions with vigor. Shes got the ideas that are realistic and powerful, and shes got my vote. My thought, all three actually did very well. Too bad they cant all be elected together. Jean undecided voters now have a little more than seven weeks to make that decision. Jeanne mackin, wmur news 9. Amy coming up this morning on closeup. Wmur political director discusses the candidates performance from the New Hampshire institute of politics. It has the wine minus alcohol producing more. Mark from the Innovation Center, welcome. Thank you. And glenn miller founder of the Vera Roasting Company on the east coast and professor of chemistry where did you get this idea . Wine into coffee. As you mentioned resveratrol, theres been a lot of research linking red wine to the health, and the french have a low incidence of Heart Disease despite the fact that they have a diet of high fat. And there are studies about red wine and seem to point the finger to resveratrol. Were going to drink this in a minute and how you put this together. But mark, glenn is in your Innovation Center in portsmouth. What do you do to help glenn get this started because youve done this for a number of businesses. We try to help the New Hampshire economy going. I met glenn at the New Hampshire with unh back in 2010 on a Prior Company we worked on together. Right. When he came up with this idea he showed up at our doorstep and collaborated with the team at our center. And you provide expertise to a new company, plus funding, right . Yeah, not so much fund being, we help get it when its necessary. We basically fill in the gaps in the startup teamments ok, now, glenn, lets walk through this. Here we have grapes, we have coffee beans in my hand and we have the finished product in this thermos and in 0 your cups. Lets he a talk about how this comes together. So grapes are found naturally in several places. There they are. But one of them i said grapes, im sorry, resveratrol is found naturally in several places, one the skin of red grapes. So the resveratrol can be extracted from the skin of red grapes and weve found a way to these coffee beans here and you roast them . Roasted first and then the infusion process. Oh, afterwards. Yes. And you arrive at the final product, coffvee, coffveev for vera. The v for vera and resveratrol. Youve had production lines and where are you selling it . Were selling it at vera. Im going to taste an and tell the audience how good it is. Thats delicious. Thank you. And thats the mild thats the medium roast. The medium roast, but you also have french roast, right . Glenn miller, who is the founder of Vera Roasting Company on the seacoast and mark galvin, and good luck with this, youll be selling at christmas time. Its going to turn very active, im sure, in the coming hours as we get closer and closer to the christmas rush. You just feel it across New Hampshire right nowment i am now. Its on the chilly side. Winds out of the northwest right now. Fairly light, 5 to 10 Miles Per Hour and its bumping in across the mountains creating a light snow in the president ial range, but that will wind down as well and clouds will give way to sun in northern and western New Hampshire. Right now that light northwesterly flow continues, 20s, up north, on average. From through pembroke and hooksett and manchester and down through the coast and keene. Temperature are on the chilly side all the way down to the southeast, but its beginning to country and some is moving in our direction as early as tomorrow afternoon. By the end of this week, Christmas Eve day on thursday, and Christmas Day itself, were going to see temperatures well above the average and possibly record shattering temperatures here coming in on thursday. Right now, were tracking fair skies in the central part of the great lakes. More clouds were back to the west, again, a sign of a warmup. Thats the cold air at the surface. Over the great lakes, with warm air riding over it, but no rain or snow, so it should be a dry monday despite an increase in clouds. Today, decreasing clouds, as the sun develops state wide. For tomorrow, a little bit of sun early, as we advance through the late morning and afternoon, the clouds will likely win out. A chance of a shower or two, mainly up north. Dry Tuesday Morning with a little bit of sun and more showers between now and tuesday night, tuesday afternoon. Guns in and of themselves in my opinion will not make americans safer. We lose 33,000 people a year to gun violence. Who denies that its crazy to criminals or who are mentally unstable. Weve got to eliminate the gun show loophole. Isil training videos are telling lone wolves, the easiest way to buy a combat assault weapon in america is at a gun show and its because of the flipflopping, political approach of washington that both of my two colleagues have represented there for 40 years. Help americans reach the middle class. Talked about how they would expand access to people who simply want to get a good education thats affordable. In manchester. One topic brought up during the debate hits home for a lot of people in the Granite State. The heroin epidemic and how to combat it. We need to understand that addiction is a disease and not a criminal activity. And that means and that means radically changing the way we deal with Mental Health ap addiction issues. There are too many opioids and that leads to heroin addiction and change the way we do Law Enforcement and we need more programs and facilities. When somebody is ready to get help, theres a place for them to go and every Law Enforcement overdose. With less than two months before New Hampshire votes, marlin o marlin Martin Omalley was here to break it down. Mar hidden Martin Omalley do anything to try to do everything, but toned it down a bit, covered from health care, education, National Security and isis. Early on in the debate, the issue of gun control took center stage. And Martin Omalley tried to distinguish himself from the other candidates. What we need on this issue is not more polls, we need more principle. When isil does training video that says the easiest way to get an assault combat weapon in United States of america is at a gun show, we should all be waking up. We need comprehensive gun safety legislation and clinton of changing their positions over the years. Who denies that its crazy to allow people to own guns who are criminals or are mentally unstable. Weve got to eliminate the gun show loop show, in my view we have got to see that weapons designed by the military to kill people are not in the hands much civilians. Gun in guns in the hands of people is not making it safer. The u. S. Should not launch a ground war against isis, but that we need to be proactive. The major priority in terms of a foreign and military policy should be destruction of isis. If the United States does not lead, there is not another leader, there is a vacuum and we have to lead if were going to be successful. Threats that were facing and we need to lead as a nation in confronting it and putting together new alliances and coalitions. I felt like we were able to deliver our message of new leadership, getting things done, and the sort of new approaches and fresh thinking that we need both in our Foreign Policy and National Security strategies and also the more inclusive economy that was the hallmark of the United States. After the debate wrapped up. Hillary clinton headed over to millies in manchester to meet with supporters. Hillary and former president bill clinton shook hands and about the future of her campaign. The native people of New Hampshire and the people that you welcome from other states who have known her every step of her life who come up here and whose door they should knock on, we need you. This is a very, very big thing and im very grateful. I was so proud of her tonight, but the proof is in the voting. And weve got to be out there every single day. Holiday vacation. Yeah, the holiday. So how did the candidates do during this debate . Andy smith from the unh center gave analysis. I think if anybody benefitted, i think its probably Hillary Clinton, she wanted to make it through the debate without a major gaffe. We assembled a group of undecided voters and our jean mackin had the reactions. This were from all over the state of New Hampshire with something in common. They were undecided before the debate. They watched from the studio in wmur and some taking notes and some with more insight. Im more familiar with them than i was before so im comfortable with that, but i outstanding job. I have a lot more respect for governor omalley than when i came in. Im undecided, but helped to formulate and coalesce thoughts i had about them. Im impressed with senator sanders at his age being so up and spritely. Issues in New Hampshire. Epidemic. Isis, obviously they went in depth with it, the infrastructure of the countries and the electrical grid. I thought they nailed that. And some say the debate moved them into the decided column. Ive got to say i really like him. I agree with about 99. 9 of the stuff he said. With what Bernie Sanders said . Yes, so i think hes definitely going to get my votements. Hillary clinton has been answering all the questions with are realistic and powerful. Shes got my vote. I thought all three, actually did very well. Too bad they cant all be elected together. Undecided voters now have a little more than seven weeks to make that decision. Jean mackin, wmur news 9. Amy coming up this morning on closeup, wmur political director discusses the candidates performance with neil lavek from the National Institute of politics.
