Thanks huge flames destroy the armont inn located in campton the building. Good afternoon. I m erin fehlau. At this point investigators don t know how the fire started, but they say if a neighbor hadn t woken up when he did the owner might not have made it out. Wmur s ray brewer has our top story from campton this noon. Ray it was just after four in 4 00 a. M. When the neighbor heard a noise and thought it was a moose going through the woods but then he looked out his window. That glow turned out to be the armont inn. Andrew gannon lives next door, he called 911 and then went up to inn to wait, while watching the fire spread. It was burning up on the back from mason road i thought it might have been a chimney fire but you could see through the old cracks in the wood and it was definitely engulfed inside. Ray a Police Officer was first on the scene and they kicked the door in. The owner of the inn upstairs asleep. He was very unaware, disoriented. Ray gannon says they carried the man downstairs, and the owner who was the only person inside , at the time, was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery. We sent a crew upstairs they did their best to try and stop it. Unfortunately, with an old building and lack of water we were in an uphill battle. Ray literally and figuratively as the inn was at the top of a long hill. Water had to be shuttled from over mile away. The fire would eventually go to four alarms, bringing some 60 firefighters to the scene. The chief says the fire advanced through the attic faster than they could stop it. A building this size takes a lot of water and unfortunately we just couldn t physically get it fast enough. Ray according to the town s Historical Society the inn was built in 1935. Neighbors say that it wasn t a working inn any longer, but the owner would host occasional dinners, and people would come up to take pictures. Now all that remains is a shell. The fire chief says this is one of the older buildings in town and they were always worried about it burning down so they had practiced just in case. However, despite that practice they were unable to save the , inn. Ray brewer, wmur news 9.
