The middle class will continue to disappear unless we level the playing field. With your help, as president , tom take a look at this, weve received a number of pictures like this one in our inbox here. Viewers spotting big columns of sunlight. Jennifer Hayley Lapoint joins us now to explain what that is and whats causing it. Hayley weve gotten a couple of these over the past couple of days, people saying what is that . Looks like a light saber coming out of the sun pointing directly upward, its actually something very cool thats happening. Ill share a few photos. These two photos were from milford along 101. One of our viewers sent this in as they were commuting in the mill fielder area. You can see the beams of light believe it or not this can also happen at night. You can see the pictures there. And these are actually called light or ice pillars that are occurring and it happens when the air is very cold. We had that earlier this week. Whats actually happening is in the air right above where these lights are, there are little ice crystals, and those ice crystals are in the shape of a flat plate. And as the light is traveling through those little ice crystals, theyre reflected upward. So with those lights from say a parking garage there or as the sun was making, you get these pillars spiking upward because of the shape of the ice crystals. Thankfully it has warmed up a bit. So less of a likelihood of us seeing those light pillars, mike haddad has more on the forecast. Mike yes, a beautiful shot there. At beautiful pictures up north as well. This is Mount Washington, up over 6,000 feet up, mighty chilly compared to the valleys, in a deep snow pack now. Evidence of the winter season. But in the valleys back into the 40s today in many spots, including concord, where we topped off over 40 for the second straight day. The normal high only 31. The low this morning down to 7. Temperatures lining up in the 20s. Even though it is colder atop Mount Washington right now with the sundown, the valleys are cooling off quickly. So fairly uniform read is, in some spots it warmer higher up, typically called an inversion. When any storm moves in over the next few days, not talking about a lot of big snow, by sunday more rain than anything else. Single din it in tupper valley. About 10 to 15 or so in concord up through the lakes region and a little above that points south and southeast. Quite a few changes though coming in down the road, seasonable temperatures, pleasant conditions right now, warmer air will try to build in from the south and along with with that quite a surge of rain weekend. And heres the reason why. Jet stream thats locking in cooler air back in the rockies will stay put, and out ahead of it temperatures will run at or above the norm right through the entire weekend. So again its cool and not cold. That means sundays storm will be rain as opposed to snow. But there is a lot of arctic cold that will be on the map later in the weekend, surging in our direction, so a got part of next week will be mainly dry, now. Some of the cold could be felt with temperatures struggling to get out of the teens north and low to mid 20s south. Quite a big storm to the south clouds that build in by tomorrow in southern New Hampshire. Then we have to wait until saturday night and sunday to hear from that next with him with quite a bit of rain. Mostly clear skies tonight, seasonably chilly, single numbers and teens for many, 20s at the coast. Tomorrow morning we start off with a little sun, then the will cloud will build in from the water, could be drizzle late day hampshire. Tricky. A lot of clouds, a light on shore breeze and enough moisture so a couple of scattered very light snow showers and flurries or even a little bit of freezing drizzle. So if youre traveling later tomorrow night through saturday morning, could be a little slick on some untreated surfaces, notice as we advance in time on sunday, here comes the rain, could start as a wintery mix of sleet or freezing rain north and west of concord. But outside of that it a wet weather maker on sunday. Tonight clear, cold, a few clouds by morning along the coast. Fair skies north tomorrow, so the brightest skies in the north saturday a light mix and in the morning scattered mixed showers. Heavy rain sunday, warm and windy. Then the winter chill fills back in starting monday through most of next week. Tom cs and bs in the news tonight. Yes, and the celtics play in chicago against the bulls. Hi, im elizabeth, 14 years old in the 8th grade, my chosen sport is curling. The thing i like about curling the most is strategy. There are like 100 different ways you can approach each shot. You can do tons of Different Things to every stone in the house, and every decision that the skip makes affects the outcome of the game. I think thats really cool, i just fell in love with it. I thought its so cool how they can balance themselves on the ice like that and lower their body that much, its a really interesting concept, none like any other sport. The hardest part is definitely the way the ice changes and how it different at every club and on every sheet. Later this month my team, going to the u. S. Womens junior championships in wisconsin, its really fun to see some of the best junior curlers in the united states.
