Josh you dont have to travel far for dramatic scenery, people are still talking about the beautiful sunset over New Hampshire last night. Jean there are very specific reasons for this color. Meteorologist josh judge is here to explain the sunset science. Thats right, the science of sunsets is very interesting and there were some very nice sunsets last night. Everybody was talking about it on facebook and twitter. Check out this great shot rhonda had last night, beautiful oranges, pinks, red theres. And one more over mancheter, south will row street, thanks to deborah for this one. How do these tops of sunsets light up the sky in such interesting colors . Well, the answer lives in the fact that the atmosphere all around our earth has disus particles and gases in dust particles and gases in it. So the sunlight comes down through the shortest path through the atmosphere, so it does not break apart the light as much. But when the sun is low in the atmosphere, look how much longer the light has to travel through the atmosphere, and the atmosphere breaks apart and separates out all the colors from the prism and by the time the light gets to us its just reds and oranges and yellows that are left and thats why we have such a beautiful sunset, especially when theres clouds. Tonight a nice sun set, clear skies. Mike thats right. You have that high thin which wispy overcast during the day, sometimes it can make for brilliant sunsets. Heres a view out of portsmouth from sunup to sundown where we didnt have a lot in the way of cloud cover today. New london down to 40, and lower 40s through the rest of the lake sunapee stretch. By tomorrow a little cooler and the same story on wednesday. On average, lower to mid 40s across a good part of the lakes region, then colder up north. Already with skies beginning to partially clear its in the mid to upper 20s along the canadian low 40s in the Mount Washington valley. So overnight tonight we do dip back into the teens north, 20s to around 30 central and south. But tomorrow not as warm as today, but seasonably cool at least through wednesday. And on thursday. By then a little surge of warmer air tries to approach and that will also bring with it quite a few clouds and our next chance of some precipitation. Right now its lining up not too far away, but initially this will dry up in time. By later on thursday it rolls in here with the best shot of rain thursday afternoon into thursday night. Cold enough air for snow to hit portions of the west. It remains dry and seasonable in the east. So no big storms to track over the next few days.
