Now to charleston, south carolina, where Police Officer Michael Slager is on trial for a fatal shooting. He took the stand on tuesday breaking down during his testimony. We could hear closing arguments testify. But he clearly wanted to tell his own story in his own words. At times he was tearful. My family has been destroyed by this. The scotts family has been destroyed by this. Its horrible. Reporter former North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager was here on the witness stand trying to convince jurors hes not a murderer saying that he killed walter scott in 2015 because at the time he says he felt threatened. And at that point i made the decision to use lethal hes always dangerous. Reporter but prosecuted asked how dangerous could scott have been as he was running away from the officer unarmed. They even made slager stand up and hold a tape ruler to show how far scott ran before slager started firing. It was 18 feet. I didnt know what was going on with all that so i fired my firearm until the threat was stopped. Reporter shortly after the shooting slager told investigators he thought scott now knows thats not true. That it fell to the ground. Slager says the two fought over the taser in a struggle that happened before the cell phone recording. But he had trouble explaining what hes seen doing here. Picking up the taser from one location and moving it closer to scotts body. I dont know why i dropped it on the ground but i did pick it up seconds later. Was it because i was policing my gear . I cant even answer to that. Reporter lawyers for scotts family says it looks to evidence. You always wonder why exactly did he run back and pick it up . And then actually drop it by mr. Scotts dead body. Reporter it is possible the court could take a field trip to the crime scene today. Slager is pleading not guilty. If he is convicted he could get up to life in prison. Robin. Keeping a close eye on this. Michael. To that devastating plane crash with the brazilian soccer loss, six people miraculously made it out and david kerley has more and theyve recovered the black boxes. Reporter thats right, michael. An Indiana School board is facing backlash for a measure that requires certain High School Students to concept to surprise screening. And we sat down and you said, boy, we have a debate going on here. A lot of parents, this is dividing the community. A lot of them feel like this is invasion of privacy. Others think its fair. It was a 32 vote a the reason its legal is because youre talking about Extracurricular Activities and students who park on campus. Those are the ones who are subject to the random drug screenings. The Supreme Court weighed in on this in 1995 and said its okay to test kids playing sports in 2002. They said its okay to test kids more broadly involved in Extracurricular Activities. Whether its a good idea is a separate issue from whether its legal. And it actually exists in about half the schools in end that play sports i have to do this but if i dont play sports if you dont engage in Extracurricular Activities. This is why its a bad idea. I think if you say to people if you engage in Extracurricular Activities youre suddenly subject to drug testing. What does that mean, that means some kid also say, you know what, i just wont do Extracurricular Activities. There also the ability to cheat on these tests and theres also the fact that these testing isnt effective. The American Academy of pediatrics is strongly thats one side. We got two dads here. We had Felicity Jones the other day. She said she did kung fu martial arts. You did military training for this. Yeah, my character is a captain, an Intelligence Officer so, yeah, i had to do a lot of military training the military works, you know, because im supposed to keep this Team Together through the mission and i know nothing about war, you know. Thankfully. Its a good thing, right. So i had to do a lot of research and it was a lot of fun. Also just the physical training to be able to do the stuff we made on this film because there was no like the double will do you got some injuries. Yeah, of course. I mean, its a star wars film. You want to go for it, right . [ applause ] do you get a life sabre. No, i can the trailer were rebels. This film is about its the most grounded star wars film. Its about the people. Its about heroes like you and i and, you know, like regular people doing extraordinary what its saying is we can all be part of change and we could all make great things happen. A beautiful message. Why did you decide to write this book now. Well, because i was i thought i was wrapping up my career as a driver but, no, seriously, you know, to go all the way back to the beginning. Probably a little bit of therapy for yourself . Oh, my gosh. Probably some things you look back and say, man, i did that. I accomplished it. When youre in it, youre not thinking about what how its affecting you and what the impact it has on your life. My parents had to work hard, sacrifice a lot. I mean, ive been at a racetrack probably about since i was maybe 6 or 7 years old. Speaking of family John Bick Ford your stepfather. The hero. You gave him a lot of credit. Luckily my mom met him when i was very young and presented the race car to me and my sister. She wasnt interested. Now shes relike i could have been danica patrick. I tell you the book is very and in reading it i couldnt help but think about, you know, ricky bobby and talladega nights. I wasnt i wasnt thinking of that when we wrote the book. You about ive had a lot of people comment about that but honestly like i go back to that time of my life and i go, who was i . It was crazy. I mean life was good on one hand because of all the wins and the success and my lifestyle all that but on the other side it was like, this is not me. This is not who i am and so, yeah, there was definitely some ricky bobby moments during that time. Right now, firefighters are on the scene of a fire on south main street. Were told one person had to jump from the second floor to escape the burning building. That person was taken to the hospital. However, Officials Say there were no serious injuries firefighters were first called to the intersection of south state street and downing street around 6 30, and the fire quickly went to a second alarm, but is now under control. An unexpected problem is threatening the town of exeters holiday lights display. For more than three decades, the town has hung lighted garlands from poles, trees, and even the town hall. Installed new poles, changing the overall electric layout of downtown meaning that the garlands cant be within 40 inches of electrical lines. Unitil has offered to do line work, in hopes of getting the holiday lights on before tomorrow nights celebration of the towns bandstand. If you are outside, it has been crummy lately, but it looks like the rain has stopped for now. Kevin a little bit of a break, areas. Clouds continued to thicken up as the fog continues to dissipate.
