>> reporter: we have a lot of stuff to talk about here at the national aquarium. also talking about how the national aquarium is involved with some of the rescue going on with the sea turtles down at the gulf. i wanted to show you this. look over my shoulder. remember the espn zone? it is just a silhouette on the power plants as the doors are shut down. it's officially closed. that's a sad thing in baltimore. over this shoulder, though, the doors are open. it is a fantastic day. want to show you the conditions as we take a look at the storm center weather net at rehoboth beach, the sun is on the boardwalk. the wind out of the north to northeast coming off the water keeping it cool 66 while the rest of us are starting to push our way through the 70s. we are actually going to be looking at fantastic weather. go to our state map and see temperatures from the last hour 69 in baltimore jumping into the 70s across the board. we'll be looking at a nice warm- up today under the influence of sunshine and low humidity. really, a light breeze. what a gorgeous feeling to the air right now in baltimore. hopefullifully we can keep it one more day before the heat returns. check out the satellite and radar composite. virtually cloud-free skies. it is high pressure that will hit our transition and pull back across the eastern third of the nation all the way down to the gulf. you'll see high pressure in control. it was a flare up of thunderstorms in the south just typical afternoon humidity stuff that will probably do the same thing today. it provides us with the light northerly breeze holding humidity in check today. the backside, the west side, the left side of your map, that's the winds that shift from the south and southwest pumping up humidity. could be severe weather near chicago this afternoon and evening. we may get a taste of some of those storms by the end of the weekend. today, though, we're fantastic. can i say that one more time? trust me, i can't say it enough. a beautiful day by late june standards. 85 is the two degree guarantee. overnight, not as chilly as the 50s we've had this morning. we'll bottom out at 63 degrees. i've been worried about the baltimore 10 miler. temperatures will stay comfortable in the morning, but we get the 90-degree heat coming up in the afternoon. on father's day, temperatures soar with the mid-90s and higher humidity and maybe late day storms. we'll check that forecast coming up in the next half hour with a 90-degree stretch taking us through the middle of next week. stick around, we'll find out more about the sea turtle rescue with the gulf and connection with the national aquarium coming up in a few minutes. back to you. if you are wondering what to have for lunch today, how about eating your way healthy. >> we're not talking about the burgers. coming up, some cherries for a better night's sleep or artichokes for your stomach. a lot of laughter comes with being a dad. this weekend, dads get gifts here. we have both the father's day humor for you. also, they've got their tuxedos on. they didn't dress up for us. we'll tell you about these guys. they will tell you firsthand the zoo is a great place to say i do. to our ongoing coverage of the gulf oil spill in the gulf. once again, looking at live pictures of the oil coming out of of that damaged well. one scientist says the crude oil isn't the only dangerous thing in the gulf. the vast amounts of methane could cause a serious threat to the ecosystem. the gas has the potential for suffocating marine life. this coming monday, ryan sea crest will host a live two- hour gulf coast relief telethon starting at 8:00. the celebrity telethon called disaster in the gulf will feature three charities so callers can pick the one they'd like to support. all of the money raised will go to the aid in rebuilding the gulf coast monday night at 8:00. the national aquarium is moving out turtles to move in more. justin berk is live at the aquarium. tell us about it. >> reporter: i'm here with jim bloomer of the national aquarium. we come here once a month and do the weather. there is an extra sense of pride on how we here in baltimore, you know, 1,000 miles away from the gulf are involved in the rescues going on there with the sea turtles, right? >> we do not have any at the moment but we've been asked to clear some room and be ready to take turtles. they think eventually some of the turtles will have to come out to different facilities to be rehabilitated for the long term. >> reporter: so you are releasing some soon, right? >> we are. we have some from the new england area and delaware. we are going to point lookout state park on saturday to release them into the bay. and when's unique about this release is that we have our new conservation partner, chevrolet. they have donated a hybrid silverado to us forrous program. >> reporter: this is tiger over here. you guys stepped up to the task? how did you get involved? >> yes, we did. chevrolet makes very environmentally friendly products so we've got the hybrid. so it was a natural partnership to partner here in baltimore to allow them to use the hybrid for environmentally friendly rescue and release these animals. >> reporter: so we're going to take the chalks down to the gulf to pick up the sea turtles, correct? >> yes, tomorrow morning. this will be the first ride of the official conservation vehicle tomorrow morning. the three turtles will get the first ride. very exciting for them. >> reporter: any idea how many you can bring back on one trip? >> how many we could hold here? right now, we could probably hold about 10 to 15 dinner- sized plate turtles in the facility here. >> not the way i envision describing that. did you get the visual amount on that? dinner sized plate turtles but they will not be dinner. >> the goal is to bring them in, get them rehabilitated. when they under the water whether it's oil or hit by a boat or whatever there could be long-term effects. we are here for a couple of months with them, and we get them back out. we drive all over the state to do this. the need for a hybrid technology is great. this is a wonderful partnership. >> reporter: we're proud because we do live with the largest estuary. we can relate what that would mean to our ecosystem and just the fact that is t. is 1,000 mile as way, ear all affected even if we've never been to the gulf. it's nice and thank you very much. it is a great honor to have you guys in our background helping out in the gulf. stick around. coming up in the next half hour, more fun and reading a dr. seuss book. red fish, blue fish. i've been practicing. back to you in the studio. speaking of feeling honored to have somebody in our backyard, we feel the same way about the maryland zoo. such a gem and you always bring the cutest animals. >> thank you. that's why people bring me back. this is tails. she is by far wunsch our most popular animal ambassadors. penguins are the thing the maryland zoo has been known for for a very, very long time. we are well skilled in breeding baby penguins. so we have between 55 and 70 during the summer months. then we ship them out to various zoos throughout the country. they breed during the winter which is cool. they never lose that because in south africa right now it is a little cooler. so that's when they would be breeding. opposite seasons is when it's hot in december. >> so she's missing out on the world cup. >> she is. >> i can't believe how laid back she is. >> she is. we got her when she was 3 weeks old and have been hand feeding her ever since. she is a very nice penguin and a great addition to have if you have a wedding at the zoo. >> you were one of the first people to get married at the zoo. >> we were, yeah. >> ten years ago. how did it work? >> we have two different kinds of weddings. you can do the full out wedding where you can have up to 1200 guests if you do it just at the waterfowl lake we have lots of venues. you can do it right at the lake pavilion where we did it. we were the first couple to do it there. we had about 200 people down there chaired, sitting. then we went to the mansion house for the reception whichs what so much fun. you can also do the elopement package, where you can only book that 60 days in advance. it's just over $1,000. you can get your owe fishian, a human and the face you selected for the hour. it's fort people that would rather do -- they don't want to go to the courthouse but want to do something. or there is a time crunch like somebody's getting shipped out and they have a time crunch. >> can you pick the areas? >> every year, world oceans day is held at the beginning of june. it is a nationwide celebration to teach people how to care about the ocean. we do that every day here. we do a whole month on the series we call beyond the boardwalk that brings the local focus to ocean health and fun things to do to get involved. today, you are joining us. >> reporter: one of the fun things is a classic book that i actually read to my son. one fish, two fish by dr. seuss. notice the shine here? >> richard, the mount share tavern for a while you put so much money in it. say hello to kathy. how are you? >> thanks for having us. >> they're from the mount washington tavern. get in your grill. that's what this is called, right? you want to us make burgers. how's this work? >> we want you to all send in recipes to us and we're going to judge your burgers. next time you are at a cookout and everyone says i got the best burger recipe, no, i do, we're asking you to all send in the recipes and jamie's gonna make 'em. >> go to work. >> we'll judge 'em. >> that's a great idea. it will be on the member fourth of july through august, right? >> yes. so back at the cookout, you can say i got the best burger the tavern says so. sammy's been with us for 27 years. we've got his take on a sammy burger right now. >> what is that? >> it is an ounce black angus beef -- >> yes. >> and seasoned with a mesquite barbecue mesquite. >> patty formed. look at that, two hands right there, sammy. you know, we were talking tonight everybody goes to the tavern on a friday night. saturday night, everybody who gets married in baltimore comes by the tavern. >> yes, indeed. >> you started this, right? >> i wouldn't say i started it, but my wife and i spent part of our wedding night there, and it was great. >> what do we have to do? just put up a recipe and send it in to you, right? >> go online. you can send it in that way, mail it to us, bring it by and dre out sammy's burger while you are there. >> when are you going to do it? >> we can bring in the recipes until sunday night the 20th, father's day. >> oh, father's day. >> we're taking recipes until midnight. then after that, it will be up to our judging panel and making up your recipes with sammy. we've got great ones in so far. >> no kidding. when's a good way to do it? what would you advise people right now who want to put up a recipe. what would you advise them about the ingredients? >> just be descriptive. if they send it in, you give me the recipe, i'll have no trouble at all making it, tasting it, they'll judge it, and thus heading to our menu. >> all right, kathy, has there been a recipe so far when you said what in the world? >> we had interesting ones with fried egg on it that i never tried before. a little trend is something called a meat loaf burgers with italian sausage and egg in there. we've got veggie burgers which we also brought along today for sammy to show you. >> exactly. >> he'll show you the veggie burger. at the tavern it's new to our menu and if anybody knows my husband down there, he is a total meat and potatoes guy. it totally surprised me when he had me try the veggie burger saying he loved it. we're going to turn your cameraman into a veggie burger lover. he's saying no. you'll try sammy's and you will love it. >> you've been in baltimore forever and every. get in our grill right now. all you have to do is send your recipe into the mount washington tavern. it will all be over on father's day. they will select and who knows, it could be the petition burger. >> there you go, pete's veggie burger. >> sammy, kathy, nice seeing you. >> thanks for having us. we're going to keep flipping and be right back. all right. i found the perfect spot for a day like this. you see that tree? you see those grasses? i should be sitting there right now. the problem is, it's roped off. so if you've got a spot near your house or somewhere nearby to find a nice tree to put your back up against to site and enjoy, this is one of those nice, lazy days that it's not too hot and sticky, it's nice and cool. a little hot in the sun. we are approaching the longest days of the year. lap on that sunscreen even on a relate ofly cool turning warmer morning. you can start burning in 10 to 15 minutes' time frame depending on your skin type. outside, we take tout beach. good weather today, great weather through the weekend. we are looking at rehoboth. temperatures hover around 70, 68 degrees. across the state, can you see down to ocean city and back across easton to baltimore temperatures already jumping to the 70s. we spent the morning in the 50s and 60s. these are numbers from the top of the hour. once we get to the 10:00 reading, temperatures jumping to another 5 or 6 degrees. check out our satellite. can you see a cloud? there's not many there across the region. if we can pull back, not much to speak of with the exception of storms pushing their way into the great lakes with the severe weather threat from chicago westbound to iowa. same complex that brought them to minnesota yesterday. the deep south, they'll have the typical afternoon thunderstorms. we're going to be quiet at least for today. we'll get that humidity pumping back in over the weekend. today it's about the sun and might be a few afternoon clouds. comfortable humidity and near seasonal temperatures. the upper limit which is where wyatt went last night, 87. tonight, though work low humidity and not as chilly as it was, we'll be back into the lower 60s. good start tomorrow morning. if you are going out to the 10- mile run, getting hot in the afternoon. we'll crank the humidity up to 90. could be showers west of town and those clouds spill our way late in the day. father's day, i hope you get a chance to go out and enjoy it by the pool and barbecue. high temperature 94. temperatures staying in the 90s with humidity and afternoon storms. have yourself a good one, play safe and i'll read dr. seuss. jamie, have ourselves a great father's day. >> same to you. >> before we go, cheryl conner will be downtown. watch live today at 5:00 and 6:00. she will play the part of spider woman and rappel off the building. who doesn't want to see that?
