leaders. you will hear from the men who says he found hill's body. thank you. now to another murder, causing plenty of outrage,stephen pitcairn's murder may serve as an example of judicial failure, but lost in the steady drum beat of the blame game, pointing fingers and political maneuvering is the young man's life. at just 23 pitcairn did more for humanity than it ultimately did for him; a true mark of a strong young soul. "to lose somebody in this way at a point in his life when he had so much potential left, it is very, very difficult for us." dennis o'shea with johns hopkins co-workers traveled to florida for his funeral today. pitcairn excelled as an assistant researcher at the university. he was working on cancer; so dedicated so passionate, he was promoted to a lab manager just two weeks before his death. by all accounts he was going to go on to big things, it was just a matter of when. "he had all the personality traits that you want in a good doctor. he would have been very good." but pitcairn fell ill to a social disease other minds cannot quite solve. a new sign on the ever growing memorial to the 23 year old near where he was killed sums up the painful irony. painful irony. our innocent but tragic encounter with our overwhelming disease hopefully will help us heal this sickness. progress indeed is often born out of tragedy. a tragedy laid to rest in florida as hundreds of family and friends gather to mourn the loss and celebrate a short but impactful life. e desired to use his gifts and talents given by god to make the world a better place to live youth pastor chris southard. if not in life, then maybe helping to make the world, or at least baltimore a better place in death. stephen pitcairn should have turned 24 tuesday. police say it was john wagner and his wife levelva who robbed then murdered the johns hopkins researcher sunday night stabbing him in the chest. "it's frustrating for us. this is a tragic, tragic death of a brilliant young scholar. it is upsetting for each of us here, it is upsetting for prosecutors who work very hard to keep individuals like this behind bars," said baltimore city attorneys office spokesperson margaret burns. but wagner, it seems, should never have had the chance. the now 34 year old murder suspect has a checkered and documented past seemingly clearing each criminal hurdle along the way. most recently is a robbery on west mulberry street back in april. police say the guy in the phillies cap appearing on the cctv video feed is wagner helping to rob a victim outside a gas station. a jury never saw the video or the written statement from the victim. the state's attorney's office dropped the case saying the victim refused to testify for fear wagner was part of a gang. "he was adamant that he would not come to court for this particular case. ultimately prosecutors had to drop that case," said burns. that was this year; wagner's criminal trail starts in 2008. wagner pleaded guilty to a domestic violence assault receiving an eight year suspended sentence. he got probation; a privilege the courts call it, but in just under a year, wagner violated his probation several times. he was twice found guilty, once dismissed. the honorable john howard never serving any part of the eight years hanging over wagner's head. but according to court records, wagner violated his probation a fourth time. parole and probation argued for yet another warrant against wagner on july 7th of this year...it was finally signed last thursday, july 22nd, a mere three days before police say wagner stabbed pitcairn killing the researcher just two days before he would turn 24. wagner will have a bail review tomorrow. his wife and police say his accomplice was arraigned today and is being held without bail. we called judge howard for a reaction to this story but have not received a call back.it was a nice night, so 23 year old steven pitcairn decided to walk from penn station to his apartment on saint paul street. he had just come back on a bus trip to new york to visit friends. he was almost home. he was walking to his apartment in the 3000 block of saint paul street when a black man and female suspect approached him. our victim was talking to his mother at the time of therobbery and she was on the line at the time of the incident." city police spokesman anthony guglielmi says. "and she heard at least the robbery component so makes this very difficult for detectives when something like this happens." a man who lives on the street heard a struggle outside his window, and yelled out. the two suspects ran from the scene, after stabbing pitcairn . the man ran to stephen pitcairn. e was bleeding a lot, he was on his stomach, and he was bleeding a lot, yeahásaid the man, who did not want to be identified. he said he knew pitcairn was badly hurt -- and pitcairn knew it too. e was trying to and i told him don't try to talk and i told him to just hang in there and i prayed for him and i told him i was praying for him. but pitcairn died before the ambulance arrived. t was gut-wrenching. it was very very hardáhe said. the man said he was relieved that police worked so quickly -- but he's still shaken by the experience. hope that they have the right person and i hope that they have people locked up so they won't do this to anybody elseáhe said. pitcairn was an interesting young man. city police have no motive or a suspect in north west baltimore murder. it happened after midnight. police say shaun crawford was found shot in the head and he was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later. if you have any information, please call baltimore police. on the hills of sum horrible animal abuse cases in baltimore, a task force is calling for citizens and city employees to report cases and to expands the city's data base for tracking those cases. - in recent months, images of animal abuse have shocked baltimore and have driven the anti-animal abuse task force to seek solutions to the problem, but chairwoman caroline griffin says the abuse has continued. continuehere were just so many i don't think the media could keep don't think the media could keep up with all of the crimes, e have a case of a dog that we think was starved to death. we have a case where a dog was shot and that case has gone unpunished." the task force delivered its final report to mayor stephanie rawlings-blake on friday. calling for tougher state laws to punish animal abusers---up to five years in prison for a felony, and even spectators at dog fights would face felony charges. many of the local recommendations focus on educating the public. "we've created this laminated book mark that just has some of the cases that we've studied that tells people what to do," said griffin. in light of the budget crisis facing the city of baltimore, the task force knew that its job would be difficult if it came up with solutions that would carry a hefty price tag. task force members acknowledge that a call for a bigger shelter or more animal control officers would be difficult if not impossible.
